Good afternoon and welcome to H Ivy Field at the Harland and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex and for Dodge, home of the Iowa Girls State Softball Tournament, presented by Iowa Farm Bureau alongside Abby Alman. I am Nick Brinks. And in just a moment, we'll bring you the fourth of five 2-way matchups from day two of the tournament.
A winners bracket showdown between the Ridge View Raptors and the Wapsy Valley Warriors. Thanks for joining us on the Girls Union Network powered by Mid American Energy Company. Ridge View took down Durant, the two seed yesterday with a two nothing win thanks to a seventh inning two-run home run by Zoe Ashinger.
Wapsy Valley knocked off six-seated Logan Magnolia 7 to2 thanks to a fiveun fifth inning to break the 2-2 stalemate.
Two close games throughout in Ridge View and Wapsy Valley took control late.
Abby, it's a winners matchup. So, you still have the mulligan in your back pocket.
>> How does that shape up for what we're about to see? Well, the further you get in these tournaments, the more exciting it gets, but with the double elimination. Again, like you mentioned, there is still a little bit of a chance for a team if they lose. But the main thing I want to focus on right now is the pitching performances that we saw from both of these teams in their wins yesterday. Taylor Boer, we saw her yesterday, four and a third innings pitched. She didn't really struggle.
They took her out. They do that a couple times, but a 3-23 erra with nine strikeouts. A dominant strikeout performance from Taylor Boer. Then Autumn Crest came in the freshman finished off the game. No runs allowed, two and two/3 innings pitched. And then for Ridge View, Norah Todd, the eighth grader, we saw seven innings pitched from her, just three hits, one walk and six strikeouts. I've said this before and I will say it again. 2A has some dominant pitchers and we'll continue to see that through this game.
>> The senior for Wapsy Valley, the eighth grader for Ridge View. It'll be fun to see youth versus experience.
And uh we'll find out here over the next 90 minutes to two hours in this winners bracket matchup for this 2A state tournament. And a quick preview coming up at about 7:00 tonight. We'll bring you the Cardinal Grand View Christian rematch from yesterday. Uh we'll both be on the call for that one. And you knew the way the bracket was set up, it was very possible you could play the same team twice in a row or at least two days in a row. and we will get to see that here in class 2A. Before we take a look at our starting lineups, let's see how these two teams compare with our SUKUP stat comparison. And both teams are in the same ballpark, scoring just under eight runs per game. These are their numbers through the regional final.
They've changed a little bit with a game under their belt yesterday, but you look down the list, home runs, on base percentage, whether it's offense or defense, two really comparable teams.
>> Yeah, you can see Wapsy Valley has the slightest edge in a few of these categories. Um except, excuse me, uh team erra actually higher and like I said, that's a really important one in this tournament and in this division. Um runs scored like you mentioned, super close. All of these don't give a specific edge to either one of these teams, so this should be a pretty close matchup and really exciting throughout all seven innings.
>> Starters being introduced here in front of these Ridge View and Wapsy Valley fans. Thanks again to Sukup for your team comparison as we come to you from Hy Field here in Fort Dodge. Let's get to your starting lineups and we will begin with the seven seed. They knocked off the two Durant. Durant just fell in the losers bracket as well. A 6-4 loss to Logan Magnolia who have played their way back into contention.
>> And here are your Raptors led by head coach Barry Anderson. They moved to 26 and seven on the year with that win yesterday. Catcher sophomore Cory Tesh will lead things off as the umpires are being introduced here in Fort Dodge.
Reese Hawthorne the senior right fielder. She'll bat second. Senior shorts stop Zoe Ashinger bats in the three slot. Your cleanup hitter in the four slot. Brinley Green, sophomore, third baseman, she bats fourth, batting fifth. An eighth grader, first baseman, Harper Crest and Nora Todd, the pitcher in the sixth slot. She is an eighth grader. Now, they technically have her listed as the DP, but I was talking to Coach Anderson before I ran to him ran into him down at the concession stand. Same thing they did yesterday. They list her as the DP, but they are going to move her immediately to pitch her. I don't know all the ins and outs of how the DP and the flex work, but it somehow gives them a little more flexibility. Uh, but neither either way, Norah Todd bats in the six slot as your pitcher today. Ivy Tesh, another eighth grader at center field. She'll bat in the seven slot.
Mattie Heran, junior left fielder in the eighth, batting ninth. Savannah Cutback, a junior at second base. And then, um, those are your Ridge View Raptors. And on the other side for Wapsy Valley, the Warriors are 19 and seven on the year.
Austin Jeans, their head coach, left fielder, freshman Lola Dest leads things off, Taylor Boer, the senior pitcher.
And then you get to center field, the third hitter. Freshman Espen Decker.
Mattie Latberg, the senior first baseman, bats fourth, batting fifth, Sawyer Buer, sophomore shortstop. Third baseman is a junior in the sixth lot.
Gracie Sabetka. Maya Barnes, senior catcher, batting seventh, batting eighth. The freshman DP drove in a couple runs yesterday. Hasn't seen a ton of at bats until later in the season.
Had a couple big runs for them in that fiveun inning to go up by five and win it. She bats eighth. And the second baseman, a freshman Emmery Shannon bats in the nine slot. Playing out in right field and not batting is Harper Destl, an eighth grader. So, as we saw yesterday, three eighth graders in the starting lineup for the Raptors. very young team. A couple seniors with Hawthorne and Ashinger in the two and three slots. You've got a few more sophomores. Three for the Warriors. They do have the one eighth grader. And there you go. Those are your starters for the Warriors and the Raptors. Last thoughts before we see Coresh walk into the batters box.
>> Yeah. Well, you were talking about the Wapsy Valley starting lineup. That is such an interesting one to see.
Yesterday, the Wapsy Valley offense had eight hits come from eight different players. This is not a team that's based around one star player. Their whole lineup is able to get hits consistently, get on base consistently. They had eight hits from eight different players and seven runs from six different players.
Lola Destl had to step it up with two runs, but really this whole offense works top to bottom. So, we go to the top of the first inning and we will see for the second day in a row. immediately showing bunt pickoff attempt and the throw is in time. You could see it when Tesh was almost halfway there.
If the throw was going to be on the money, Tesh would be sent packing as Barnes and Shannon combine to send Tesh back to the dugout after her leadoff single. And that's how Ridge View started yesterday. They had a steal and then they also tried to go from a single to a double. Second base was a was a tough base for Ridge View yesterday and it's come back to bite them early in the going here as well with a quick out and a foul off to the first base fence.
>> Yeah, that's actually definitely not how you want to start off a game, but defensively a great way to get the ball rolling for the Warriors defense. Again, they are a team that has worked together all over the diamond and that's a great example. Here comes the 1-1 and the swing went just enough for that second strike as Reese Hawthorne's batting 330 on the year. 35 hits, 31 runs, 26 RBI's including yesterday.
And she went one for three on the day with a single.
She'll look for the one-two with one out. Nobody on for Ridge View. in the orange uniforms, gold numbers, Wapsy Valley and the black tops, white bottoms.
>> Yesterday from Bour, we saw her, she had a little bit of a slower start in the circle yesterday. A little bit of struggle, giving up a few hits here and there, but she really found her groove quickly by the end of the first inning, and it looks like she's not having that same problem early on right now. A looking strike three and Hawthorne is sent packing two outs now for the Ridge View Raptors. Zoe Ashinger, the senior shortstop, was the hero yesterday. Six innings, no score. Go to the top of the seventh and a two-run homer. And that was enough. A two nothing win for Ridge View to move them on in the winners bracket. A swinging strike from Ashinger, the 340 hitter with that fourth home run of the season yesterday.
and she's got a quick 0 and1 count with a couple outs and again they got the leadoff single but Coresh was caught stealing the throw in time at second.
Booer's one uh 01 pitch misses low and now the count is one and one with two outs here. The Warriors are trying to get out of this as quickly as they can. It seems obvious that's exactly what you want to do in softball, but getting out of that leadoff hit situation they found themselves in. If they're able to end it this quickly, that would be huge.
>> Shot to left field. That'll hit the fence off the bounce and it's a standup double for Zoe Ashinger with a couple outs on the board. Ashinger, that's about exactly where she sent the home run yesterday. Not quite enough on it today, but that is a double for her. And that'll be her sixth double of the year.
And that brings us to Brinley Green, the sophomore third baseman. A couple hits here in this first inning. One already sent packing caught stealing over to second. But Ashinger takes a base at second with a couple outs.
>> Yeah, if she's looking to build off the momentum of that hero home run, the Warriors should look out for her.
>> A pitch up and up and away from Booer yesterday. Went those four in a third inning. gave up six hits, a couple earned runs in that 7-2 win. Nine strikeouts, three walks, and the count is one and0 from Booer with Ashinger at second. And a swinging strike evens things up to Brinley Green.
Two for three in a walk yesterday and their win over Durant.
So now she comes back and gets ready for the 1-1. Two outs, runner at second, and a foul ball. This could be playable in foul territory, but Shannon, Latberg, and Destl all try to get there. Nobody can.

>> Ashinger displaying exactly what you want to see as a coach. That ball was already caught and she still crossed home plate. Just running when you hear contact. That's what you're preached to with two outs all throughout your softball career.
>> Top of the first inning just underway here on the girls union network. 78° sunny skies here in Fort Dodge and north wind 10 to 20 m an hour. The real fuel literally 35° cooler than this point yesterday. It was 114 at one point when we were broadcasting last night uh before the sun started to go down. But uh much more comfortable, cooler, and the breeze feels good too. Ground ball fouled the first >> and it's two and two still. I have to tell you, I went outside earlier today and I was cold. Um, I think if I told that to anyone who played yesterday, they would not be very happy with uh with what I had to say, but it is a beautiful day for softball. We can finally say that here at this tournament.
>> I got here at 8:30 this morning. I was literally the first car in the parking lot over the right field fence. I was broadcasting uh one of the 10 o'clock or 10:30 games this morning for a radio station and uh yeah, it felt nice compared to yesterday. I was like, you know what? I might just bring my tent and sleep out here tonight. It's that nice out. Two and two. Another fowl.
But this fair bedroom at my friend's house here in Fort Dodge will have to do.

Ridge View took down Durant yesterday, the two seed. They just got bounced by Logan Magnolia in the losers portion of the bracket. So, the Panthers of Logan Magnolia remain alive. They'll play tomorrow and Wapsy Valley as the three seed. They beat Logan Magnolia yesterday in the game that we broadcast last night.
We could see some more rematches tomorrow as we will get a rematch in our 7:00 game tonight between Grand View Christian and Cardinal. Loser goes home, winner moves on to tomorrow. We've got a quick one and one count for Lola Destl.
The freshman left fielder. Sends one to left field right into the glove of junior Maddie Heran. Didn't have to move too far for that one. Destl went one for two with a double yesterday. Scored a couple runs. She'll have to wait for her next channel seeds extra base hit, which we just saw one in the top of the first.

And it's Taylor Boer's turn. The pitcher, nine strikeouts yesterday, one for two with a run and an RBI and a walk. And she'll face Nora Todd, an outstanding eighth grader coming in with that erra of 1.5.
She has walked four batters all season.
That includes one yesterday. Two were intentional walks this year. Just an eighth grader. Just outstanding. 87 to4 strikeout to walk ratio. And a quick two and0 count to Bour. Yeah, that is some of the best ball control you will ever see. Able to get that if not in the zone, but in a place where batters will fight for it.
>> Ground ball gets past Zoe Ashinger out to left field and Taylor Boer with a hit yesterday. She's got a hit today and the single for the senior puts Boer on the bags.
>> This is a really good spot Wapsy Valley finds themselves in. Like I said earlier, Norat just three hits yesterday. So, the fact that they're able to start off with a leadoff hit is a super powerful spot that they're in.
And if they capitalize on capitalize on it here, they'll be very happy with this inning.
>> Espen Decker, a freshman. She's had an outstanding year, hitting.451, 37 hits, 31 runs, 35 RBI's.
She's got a pair of home runs this year.
11 doubles and triples. Seven doubles, four triples. And she'll foul this one off the top of the net near the first base. dugout count is 0 and one for Espen Decker.
>> Jumping back to what you were talking about, you mentioned the double elimination tournament, the uh the rematches. This is again a new opportunity for all of these teams with the double elimination. And it's an opportunity to readjust, especially in these rematch situations. They faced these pitchers before, cuz we've seen a lot of the same pitchers come in game after game. If you're able to adjust and figure out what the pitcher's throwing, how you're able to get contact with those balls, these are whole different ball games that you're going to see.

>> I said all they wanted to do was capitalize on it. They're so close to being in the exact position they want to. With one out, they're in a really good position, but they need to be able to get runs across the plate. That's something we've seen teams struggle with throughout this tournament is leaving runners on. So if they are able to get at least one of them across the plate, they'll be really in a good position.
>> Couple base runners for Ridge View in the top of the first, left one of them stranded, one caught stealing for Ri Wapsy Valley. They've got a quick 0 and2 count with Mattie Ladberg, the senior with a couple RBI's yesterday, one for three in their win over Logan Magnolia 72.
She comes into the match up 320 batting average and she pops this one up toward the shortstop Ashinger. But she couldn't quite find it and the runner from third will come home to score.
One of the most dangerous positions we see on a softball field, the Bermuda triangle of left field, third base, and shortstop. Oftent times that's right where the sun is shining as well. That ball can just get lost in the air.
whoever's going to catch it, turning around, that can be a very confusing place and just being heads up and watching that that ball may drop even though you're going from third right in front of it. That's really heads up base running.
>> So Latberg gets to first and now a line shot fouled to the third base side by Sawyer Ber sophomore shortstop. You mentioned Wapsy Valley.
A lot of hits for them yesterday.
Everybody but one on the team with one hit, Bour included, one for three. And she'll pop this one up behind the catcher as she dives toward third base.
Coreesh not able to get there, but the white pants in the chest plate getting a get cover. They'll get some dirt covered on him there. And Sawyer Brewer comes back for the O2 with runners at first and second and a one- nothing lead for Wapsy Valley. Bottom of the first, pitch to the outside. Gracie Sabetka put that one in about as as good a spot as you could in shallow right field. >> So now they come out to chat just to see if they can get everybody calmed down. Nora Tat has been so outstanding this season, but she's given up four hits here in this first inning. Just an eighth grader, so you you you realize you can still be invinc not invincible, but uh we'll see what Anderson and this chat in the circle can bring. But a couple of those last few plays right toward Short and second. The one toward Short I think was catchable. the one over behind second. Not quite. Just put in a perfect spot. But uh the chat here brings up Maya Barnes.
And bases loaded, one out. They've already got a two nothing lead. They've got a chance to do some even more damage here in the first inning for Wapsy Valley.
>> You can see how far forward the middle infielders are. Almost past the base runners ready to charge and get that out at home with only one out if they're able to get an out, an unproductive out.
and get two outs. That's a really good spot they'll find them in cuz they need to end this inning as quick as they can if they want to find themselves in any sort of comfortable position.
>> Change up from Todd. The 1-1 is swung to make it 1-1. That is Barnes batting 162 this year. 11 hits including one yesterday. She does have a couple home runs on the season.

>> Norat has been the pitcher that they've relied on so much throughout this season. 102 innings pitched. Zoe Ashinger the second used with 82 innings pitched. This is a senior and an eighth grader. A big difference, but relying on them both very heavily. Again, Norah Todd pitched a complete game yesterday.
A shutout game as well with a spectacular performance.
Three pitchers on the roster with at least two starts this year. All erraas under two between Ashinger and Todd along with Harper Crest, another eighth grader. So Ashinger would be the second one they would call on if needed.

We're going to get a payoff pitch here to Barnes. count remains three and two.
>> Yeah, looking at that pitching rotation like you were talking about, if they do need to make a pitching change, if they're able to read Norah Todd's balls as well as they are, they're not in a bad place with their backup pitchers.
>> Ground ball to left field, fielded by Haran and Barnes gets an RBI single and they'll bring a third runner in as Mattie Latberg comes home to score.
Brewers down to third. Seeka's over at second. Barnes to first. And it brings us to the DP. Freshman Leila Armstrong one for three with a pair of RBI's yesterday. And a great chance to add to that here. 3 nothing Wapsy Valley in the bottom of the first inning. She comes in with just six hits on the season.

That's going to drop to the back of the dirt over the second and short shorts stopped heads and they're just going to bring in one. Had a chance to maybe bring in two, but some conservative base running perhaps. Boer comes home to score as Armstrong's RBI single is the sixth hit for the inning. And now another infield conference. Coach Anderson will come out and chat once again with his Raptors.
>> Zoe Ashinger. The shorts stop looks like she now has the ball and will be taking over for Zoe Todd. Like we mentioned, 82 innings pitched for Ashinger. She is not at all unfamiliar with the circle for this team. Um but Norah Todd, they were definitely hoping they could rely on her a few more innings throughout today. Um, but definitely saving that powerful arm she's got for the remainder of the tournament. No matter what happens today, they will have another game.
>> The winner of this one will move on to 2:30 tomorrow and the loser of this one will play at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
The loser will play Logan Magnolia and then whoever wins that game would play the winner of this game right here.
So, it'll either be Logan Magnolia or one of these two teams coming right back to play against whoever wins this one.
Uh, so whatever notes the coaches have on their opponents, don't throw them away. You you very possibly may need them again tomorrow as someone could win their first semifinal game tomorrow and that's it. If they go on to the championship, if they've not lost yet, they move on. But if they lose to a team that's in the losers bracket, they play the next one and winner of that one. You might you'll play them back to back with a game break in between, but about a two-hour break, then you're right back at it.
>> Yeah, a lot of games being played here in Fort Dodge. But that's a big thing to think about when you're using your pitching rotation. If you're already in your second pitcher and you come back to face a team you've already faced before, they now know a little bit better how to hit off of more of your pitchers. You have a little bit less to surprise them with in terms of pitch differential and offspe pitches. So, it's super important to get as much out of these pitchers as either of these teams can.
>> The other game coming up tomorrow on the other half of the bracket, Grand View Christian and Cardinal. We we'll have that game coming up next. And then the winner of that one gets to face Iowa City Regina tomorrow. And Regina will be in a spot where if they win that game, they're on to the state championship as they could go 3-0 and get there. But Grand View Christian or Cardinal, whoever wins later, we'll have a chance to go back to back and knock off Regina twice.

And in the uh discussion about Ashinger coming in to pitch, did we figure out who took over at shortstop? Was it Todd or maybe Liliana AA with the uh Flex DP stuff that they had going on to start? We'll see if we can find a number on her jersey over at Shortstop, but I'm wondering if it's maybe number 19.
>> Yeah, waiting for her to make a little bit of a star play. Maybe a spin in the air to show off that number on the jersey.
>> Now a pitch in the dirt. Another runner comes in to score. Five runs in the bottom of the first inning for Wapsy Valley. This one comes, takes an awkward hop.

>> Yeah, that's one of the biggest influences of this new pitcher. We talked about Todd and her ball control.

>> The Warriors have been really blessed with this freshman class that they're working with having three players on this team that are batting at 400 or above. Two of them are freshman with Espen Decker. And here Emry Shannon, >> the two- two pitch grounded to the pitcher and Zoe Ashinger can't glove it quick enough to make the throw to first.
So Emry Shannon will get to first.
I assume we go error on the on the fielding there.
>> Yeah, I think that uh that's a safe bet.
Not a super easy ball to gain control of or anything like that, but definitely along the lines of where they're expecting you to handle it for the base, the base hit.

Ridge View can maybe rest just ever so slightly easier knowing they've got only one out they need. It's a ground ball over and there's the easy play. The ground out at third. Stepping on the bag is Brinley Green as Boer grounds one over to third base and Maya Barnes rather uh Leila Armstrong technically running from second to third will be the one out for out number three. The fourth of five 2A games today on the Girls Union Network powered by Mid American Energy as your 2026 Iowa Girls State Softball Tournament continues.
Presented by the Iowa Farm Bureau. It was a fiveun first inning for Wapsy Valley on seven hits and error. They do leave a couple on base. And now for Ridge View, a couple hits for them in the first inning. One caught stealing on the way to second. The double for Ashinger. She was stranded there and she's already moved from shortstop to pitcher as Harper Crest, the eighth grader. And first baseman gets to bat here in the five slot, followed by Norah Todd and Ivy Tesh.
>> Now, this is a situation as a coach you have to think pretty hard about. like you mentioned, got caught stealing in that first inning with some aggressive base running. But now that you're in a five run deficit, you need to be aggressive with your base running. So, how do you control that and make sure you don't get caught again and lose some of those base runners?
>> Harper Crest singles on a shot towards short center field. Puts one just shy of the logo for the girls union. And they've got three hits through five batters, but haven't turned any into runs yet.
We'll see if that can change in the second. A five-run inning for Wapsy Valley. You know, runs can come very quickly in bunches if you can start to keen in on a pitcher's throws. And Nora Todd takes a strike.
The eighth grade pitcher has subbed out in that first inning after giving up seven hits.
Pitched so well yesterday. Just struggled here in the first inning. And Ashinger came in to relieve her early.
Todd 0 and2 now the count with Crest over at first after her single.
Todd went one for three yesterday with a single and their two nothing win. Pitch to the outside. First ball. Couple strikes to Todd.
>> Yeah, Booer had an excellent start to her game yesterday. I mentioned it. Four and two/3 innings. And I said this as well. She wasn't really struggling.
She'd given up a few hits, a few runs here and there, but it was still a very strong performance from Boer before she was taken out. And that's a move that we've seen from this team a few times using her, relying on her very heavily, but not letting her finish out some of these games. This is a situation now they have quite the demanding lead. How will they use her in that situation?

We've talked about her pitching.
Obviously, this start did not go according to plan for her, but as a hitter, she's really good, too. 408 batter this year, 29 hits, 23 RBI. She's got a home run, and she'll ground one to the pitcher. Booer gloves it, finds Latterberg, and they get the the runner over to second. Crest in scoring position as Todd grounds out three.
Yeah, still a productive out with no outs when she was up to bat, being able to move the runner. It's not showing bunt like we've seen so much from these two schools. Um, but it really is the same outcome you're looking for there.
>> One out runner is at second. That's Harper Crest, the leadoff single for her. Ivy Tesh, one of their three eighth graders in the starting lineup, batting 567. Tesh here for Durant or for uh Ridge View. They knocked off Durant yesterday and she went 0 for two.
She'll try to pick up her first hit of this state tournament and she'll swing for strike two.
Yeah, going back to what I was saying, something of note, we have not seen very many players at all squared a bunt today or slap. And that's been a huge part of most of these 2-way games. Some of the best bunts I've ever seen laid down happened on this field yesterday. And it just has not been the same game strategy here.
>> I believe it was Maya Barnes for Wapsy Valley yesterday and then they almost did it two batters later, but it hit her foot and she was called out. That was Emmery Shannon the second time. And as somebody who was a bunter back in her day, you were very excited.
>> Yeah, I can't help hold that reaction when I see a bunt just go the perfect distance up the third baseline and freeze. Just beautiful result. It's working exactly how they want because they have great speed in this lineup as well as consistent bats.
>> Runner at second for Ridge View. And this two- two pitch misses to fill the count. If I'm trying to hit the ball hard, it looks like a bunt. That's how bad I am.
>> Well, as long as it has the same outcome, a productive out, you know, get some runners across. We'll take the sacrifice.
>> Three and two. That that relies on a little speed to try to get to first, which I have none of that either. And Tesh gets on with a walk. So, one out, a single and a walk here in the inning.
And that'll bring us to the junior left fielder, Mattie Heran.

They weren't able to score until the seventh inning on a two-run homer from Zoe Ashinger. They're starting to get into a spot where they're closing in on maybe getting somebody on the board here. There's a bunt popped up behind the catcher diving play from Maya Barnes.

Offensively, she rips one out of the air by Heran.
And that popup in foul territory will be outnumbered two. And now Ridge View with a couple on with just one out to work with. Things get tougher here in the top of the second.

Went 0 for one, walked twice yesterday, comes back today and puts her team on the board with an RBI single to score Harper Crest. So the two out single puts runners at first and second and brings home Crest. So they are on the board.
Ridge View does that five innings faster than yesterday. Unfortunately for them, they trail by four.
Sawyer Booers pitched to Coresh who led off with a single and then was caught stealing to second is batting here. One for one today, one for three, a run and a walk yesterday.
And two outs here for Ridge View. But a one-run inning is better than a no- run inning as they've got one on the board and can maybe see if they can start scratching and clawing from there.
>> Yeah, Nick, we've talked about this a lot. When you're in a deficit, you have to give yourself something to start building yourself back from that. Ridu has done that. They've gotten themselves runners. They've now put a run on the board as well. They're in a good place.
It seems like they're in a really rough spot. Down by four still. It is the second inning. There is so much game left and they've built a lot of momentum back up on the base running.
>> I think mentally if they would have left runners stranded out there with no runs two innings in a row after yesterday, I think they would be in a much worse off spot right now. But 5-1 feels way better than 5 nothing and this they still have an out to work with. So who's to say that Tesh and Hawthorne and Ashinger can't bat here in the second and close this gap a little further? for our head coaches today, Barry Anderson. >> There was a hesitation rounding third base that definitely made that play closer than it needed to be being waved around, but I think she saw that ball was not far away. She hesitated, but really impressive getting around that tag and getting another run again.

So, you win today, you're 2 and 0. If you win your first game tomorrow, you are on to the state championship. Uh, and if you lose today, you've got one loss, but you can play yourself back into an opportunity to play for a state title. And right now, Ridge View feels much better, down by two than they were, down by five as Wapsy Valley comes back with a grounder to second. And an easy throw as Espen Decker doubled in the first inning, comes back and grounds out to second for the first out on the first pitch of our bottom of the second. And it brings up Matty Latterberg.
>> Yeah, Ridge View, the seven seed for 2A in this tournament, is not unfamiliar at all with being the underdog. And coming up, they won that first game like you mentioned. Super impressive upset.
Coming back here again, like you mentioned, down five. That's hard to come back from. You're down by five, you're struggling. Being able to put up any runs, especially three runs there in the top of the second is super super impressive, showing of their mentality as a team. And now for Wapsy Valley, they were up five, now they're up two.

But like you were talking about, we've never had a situation like this in the state tournament. So many games, so many rematches. Uh we've we'll have our first one later today, but just so many opportunities to develop as a team. Um it's more than just playing softball when you're at this stage. You do have to take a look at, you know, statistics, what's being thrown, what's working, what's not working against each and every team.

But just from watching this game these last two innings, inning and a half, it really seems like Ridge View is in the driver's seat of this game right now despite being down two runs. Yesterday they were doing a good job of getting hits. Just struggled to bring those runners home. They've been able to get three across in the second inning. Wapsy Valley put five across in the first inning to set the tone. And now the pitch fired away to center field. Back to the fence from Nora Todd and she sends this one to the bleachers. It's a two-run homer. We are tied at five and it's the eighth grader's second home run of the season. She got pulled away as pitcher making up for it as a hitter.
>> You never want to feel anything more as a pitcher being pulled out of that game than a redemption like that in high school especially. You see so many players that pitch and bat. A lot of teams aren't using the flex and DP for their pitchers specifically. So when you're being taken out of the circle, to have the ability to give your team a tie game in the second inning despite being down five in the first is huge momentum for the team, but also you personally as a player.
>> Just a wild roller coaster for Ridge View today. Down five nothing and now they have rattled off the last five runs. Three in the second, two here thanks to Todd's home run. They usually wait till about the fourth as we saw yesterday, but Crest gave a phenomenal performance yesterday. I mentioned it earlier, two and two/3 inning pitched. No runs allowed, securing the win for the Warriors yesterday. She comes in really early today. If she's able to continue that momentum like she had yesterday, holding off the offense, this will be very impressive.

pitching one inning, four innings, or seven innings, it's all going to take a toll on a player in that heat, the sun.
These are long days they're playing.

would have been a beautiful play with the force out at second. If she was able to even stretch her glove out, not even get up and get that out, that would have been a beautiful play. Um, but just wasn't able to reach out for that.
>> Ridge View has racked up 10 hits already and they have done it against two different pitchers. Boore gave up six hits. Crest four now as we are knotted up at five apiece. All the momentum in the first inning belonged to Wapsy Valley and it's been Ridge View since scoring five runs between the second and third innings. Savannah cutback batting here at the bottom of the order with a single, an RBI, and a run to her name today. All coming in the second inning.
We saw yesterday from Wapsy Valley. The first half of that game was really up and down with both teams taking leads and holding ties. So they're not opposed to holding them at five here, taking another lead, maybe if they drop it here and there. They are not unfamiliar with finding ways to keep climbing and that's going to be so important here. But they also need to step up defensively more than we've seen.
We're here in the top of the third inning, tied at five. The one-two pitch.

Now, the one thing I do want to double check as Autumn Crest comes in to pitch just to make sure that Taylor Boer hasn't gone elsewhere in the field. I believe yesterday when she came out, she stayed out, but we'll see if we can confirm that.
Here's a fly ball that will land just foul down the first baseline to right field. Maybe a foot or two. Otherwise, we probably would have seen Ridge View take the lead.

But it just lands in front of home plate. She'll get to first on the fielders's choice. They try to get the runner coming home. Tesh out, but they can't do it. So, Ridge View takes the lead.
>> I don't know if that was actually intentional or not, but I really like how it turned out for them showing bunt.
you see the third base and the pitcher charge right away. But with a swing like that, they're waiting to see the outcome of the ball before they charge in. That gives the third base runner the opportunity to get that far down the line before the ball is in the hands.
>> Ridge View six unanswered runs. They have answered back after falling behind 5 nothing. And now the second infield conference in the circle, this time with Autumn Crest, the pitcher. Taylor Boer went two innings. Crest has gone and picked up just one out here with four hits allowed. Three runs across as Tesh drives one home. And yeah, as we as we mentioned, I don't think it was intended to be a bunt, but it was about a perfectly executed bunt. Uh like we saw yesterday, those were just planned. That one maybe not so much, >> but you'll take it if you're coach.
>> Exactly. I am one of the bigger supporters of bunts, but like I mentioned, that worked much better than I think a traditional bunt would have worked for them in that situation.

They've they've added three more runs here in the top of the third as Hawthorne gets ready to face Crest for the first time. Ground ball to first. It drifts foul, hits the dirt, painted in white just in front of Mattie Ladderberg as she scoops it up and we've got ourselves an 0 and2 count with one out.
>> In this situation where Ridge View is looking like they're really getting a hold of Autumn Crest just like they did Taylor Ber, you look at the pitching rotation and Taylor Boer used the most with 73 innings. Crest second with 59.
their third pitcher just 25 innings pitched. It's a big gap in numbers there. That's Sawyer Booer, Taylor's younger sister. And if you have to get to the third pitcher already in this game, you're really looking at troubles in your next few games, if you have a few throughout this tournament. Um, and also just getting those productive outs with all of these pitchers.

Reese Hawthorne already with an RBI single today in a prime spot here for another with the bases loaded and a couple outs to work with. Crest's pitch lined out. Doubled play potential, but the the first baseman was not near the bag. So able to get back in. Safe is Tesh, but they do get that runner out uh the the hitter.
Hawthorne almost had a chance at the double play, but Ladderberg just a little bit out of position trying to field the ball initially and uh that was just a dart right over to Shannon.
>> Exactly. Plays like that are so situational. I mentioned it earlier with bases loaded. Some of those infielders are playing further up than they would.
She also took a few steps in towards that ball as you do instinctually.
Uh definitely nothing she did with her mentality of going for the ball or the base. just situational of where she needed to be at that moment.
>> Now batting Zoe Ashinger. They will get through the whole lineup here in the third inning after getting through eight batters one inning ago.

And if they had gotten out of this inning with three up, three down, I would have been very impressed and very confident in their ability to get out of this deficit um and rebuild up that lead. But this one hit, whether or not it comes around, it really shows that this is anybody's game more than a normal one-run game would be. 76 highscoring 21 hits so far by my count. Pretty soon my calculator will run out of steam with all these hits as Barnes, the 171 hitter, came in just over 150, but has had a nice week so far.

We've seen firsthand how well Ridge View and Wapsy Valley are able to climb themselves out of deficits. One run is essentially nothing in this game.
So, three runs, although we've seen them come back from five, is really important for Wapsy Valley.

Some have had some scoreless innings, but more of the uh the run kind of innings. There have only been three goose eggs out there through eight half innings as this first pitch from Autumn Crest gets away.
Yeah, as we reach over halfway through this game, there's a three-run lead for Wapsy Valley. That lead could be a whole lot bigger. And I would not say that this game is anywhere close to over.
Both of these teams have come back from deficits. Ridge View came back from a fiveun deficit. So, this three-run is absolutely possible for them.

And you mentioned one pitch if you happen to do it with a home run. Hawthorne's got three of those this year. She's one for three today with an RBI in the second inning. And then Zoe Ashinger, she's got four, including yesterday's two-run winner. Wasn't a walk-off necessarily, but she did it in the top of the seventh in a scoreless game. And Hawthorne will take the 200. And she was looking for her fourth. There comes up empty.

>> Yeah, there is so much to be said about Ridge View and their determination throughout this tournament again coming in as the seven seed. Winning that first game it seems like is the hardest challenge they'll have. Just getting to round two. Then they faced a 50 deficit in the first like we mentioned. just continuing to build out of that battle back despite losing that lead a few times here. They continue to rally in this tournament.

A couple runs her single back in the third. Also walked in the second.
This one has been back and forth. If you like offense when it comes to softball, you have come to the right place. I've got 29 hits combined for these two teams. One hit for Ridge View and each would have 15 hits today.
Compared to yesterday where Ridge View, they certainly didn't get 14 hits. I think they had about nine. They struggled to score the runs, but two-run homer was all they needed as this one's fouled into the net. And it doesn't matter that there's glass and a screen and a net ahead of us. It's still easy for us to flinch at something like that.
>> Yeah, I definitely flinched. Also had a hard time seeing whether or not that really bounced into the net. Uh these are hard balls for some of these catchers to read. Cor, excuse me, Maya Barnes there having to really read a lot of these balls. She made one beautiful play earlier off of a bunt that went high. Uh she's been really impressive behind the plate.

Mattie Heran just the fourth Raptor strikeout today. Each pitcher with one. Taylor Boer has a couple and it's now Savannah Cutabback's turn. And now you're Ridge View. You've been playing from behind almost all day.
You've been able to tie it a couple times at six and nine, but you haven't really been able to take much of a lead.
You led six to five there for just a little bit. But now with one out here away from going to the bottom of the sixth inning, you're also starting to count your outs.
You you need at least a run here in the next couple innings and hope your defense can't give up anything to Wapsy Valley. The the Warriors have done just enough to stay just a step ahead of the Raptors for most of this one.

They trailed by one for a while. 65 earlier and we will see Maya Barnes a two-run homer in her last at bat and she'll take a looking strike from Zoe Ashinger who has struck out three and walked one today with those eight hits and unofficially four earned runs allowed.

Very different stats. This is an interesting substitution. You're down by one, one out with two runners on.
This team has not seen her thrown and that is for sure. They don't know what to expect with these pitches. But if they're able to get a hold of her pitches and with the lack of experience she's had this season, this could be a dangerous situation for Ridge View.
>> She hasn't faced more than 30 batters this year unofficially, just 27.
She'll make her third appearance of the season. Two strikeouts, no walks, five hits allowed, two runs, no earned runs.

Wapsy Valley has won five straight, including yesterday over Logan Magnolia, their three regular or their three regional games and their re uh regular season finale. Both teams with momentum, trying to stay alive on the winners half of the bracket.
And here we go. Top of the seventh. They have had to play from behind a lot today. Coresh, Reese Hawthorne, Zoe Ashinger. They've combined for six hits, two runs, and four RBI's today. They'll be the three called upon here in the seventh for the Raptors at H High Vee Field in those orange tops, gold numbers, white pants. Wopsy Valley in the black uniforms and white or black jerseys, white pants.

Tesh gets there on the error.

So, there are a lot of factors causing the ball uh to move and give the outfielders a lot of trouble.

very long shadows with that sun off to the west beginning to set and if you're fielding anything there near second base you're kind of looking straight into it and now a foul ball 0 and2 the count from Reese Hawthorne with Tesh on I have it as Wapsy Valley's first error of the day kind of a 50/50 play we've seen a few get close to the glove of some infielders and outfielders of late uh the ones that I gave hits did not touch the glove that one touched the glove I'll I'll give that the I'll give that one the error. And here we are in the top of the seventh. That one misses on the low side. Pops out of Barnes's hand, but she corrals it. The runner doesn't take off. That's Tesh at first. Tesh was caught stealing over to second back in the first inning. I can almost bet she won't put herself into a position to get thrown out if they're if it's not a clear and obvious situation. Down by two. Pitch to the outside misses. Two and two. Ridge View looking for two runs to keep their winner bracket hopes alive.
>> Yeah, 20 runs scored in this game. One run doesn't sound like a lot, but that one insurance run Wapsy Valley scored last inning is huge. And I think that's going to be super important on this inning. So, like you said, they're not going to risk any of their base runners unless they absolutely have to because any extra base runners is going to make or break this game.
Hawthorne singled and scored. Two innings to go in her last at bat. She'll take the 2-2. And there's a swinging strike three. Booer gets her third strike out of the game. And she's only faced six pitchers, uh, six batters as the pitcher. I knew what I was trying to say.
>> With the amount of pitchers we've seen in this game, she's probably faced a fair share of pitchers as well.
>> That's right. Everybody's getting to pitch a little bit today. Zoe Ashinger will step up now. One for four. She doubled back in the first and with one out. She takes a strike.
They need two runs. She had the seventh inning two-run homer yesterday.
She would love to play hero once again to tie this one up with Tesh at first.

Then Espen Decker is there. The freshman to make the grab just on the upper side of that girls union logo. One out away now are the Wapsy Valley Warriors from advancing with a 2 and 0 mark to the semifinal tomorrow.

Some late drama here and a 31 hit 20 run affair. 119 Lapsy Valley with the two-run lead trying to seal it here with two outs and the two-1 pitch coming from Sawyer Boer popped up play. A bull third baseman hauls it in. Gracie Sabetka makes the final grab for the final out. And on an 119 win, we'll move Wapsi Valley on to 230 tomorrow as the three seed, the highest seed, still in it in the winners bracket.
Grand View Christian plays next. They are the one seed playing in the loser bracket. They'll face Cardinal coming up in a little bit. They're in the top half getting to face off against Iowa City.
Regina tomorrow. However, that one shakes out. But here on the bottom part of the bracket, Wapsy Valley outlasts Ridge View by a couple runs 119. Your final score here on the Girls Union Network powered by Mid American Energy. What a fantastic game. Pitchers struggled at times. Batters succeeded.
Time in timeout. We got a lot of runs up on the board. Takeaways from this one, Abby? I think one of the biggest takeaways from this is Sawyer Boer who is putting the logo placement on the bracket right now. Player of the game.
We didn't see very much of her from the circle but that was the make or break player Taylor Sawyer Ber in the circle.
Just the ability for Wapsi Valley to have the depth in their pitching rotation to be able to go to her and she steps up as well as she did was such a huge part of this game. Being able to slow down Ridge View just a little bit in the final few innings is the reason that they're advancing in this bracket.
>> So, here's how the bracket shakes out as the Ridge View Raptors fall. Wapsy Valley moves on. Ridge View will face Logan Magnolia tomorrow morning at 10:00 and then the winner of that game will get to face the Wapsy Valley Warriors coming up at 2:30. Wapsy Valley already knocked off Logan Magnolia yesterday and Ridge View will face Loma tomorrow. Wopsy Valley, they'll have seen both of them and they get this one an 119 win.
What a fun game. Uh 31 hits by my count.
I did count three errors. Some of those hits and errors might have been 50/50. I don't know how our numbers will will stack up to the official numbers, but uh what a what a big day. All but one player that started today got a hit and some like Harper Crest goes four for four. She got four for Ridge View. A couple girls for Wapsy Valley. You have three for three days. Taylor Boer and Leila Armstrong each with three hits.
Each team with a homer. Maya Barnes gets one for Wapsi Valley and Norah Todd gets one for the Raptors. But uh Wapsi Valley, they know they have the easier path. Ridge View will have to go to the losers bracket and see what they can do in the morning.
>> Yeah. Well, if this game taught us anything about Ridge View, it's that their journey in the state tournament is far from over. They will continue to battle through that losers bracket.
