The term 'indio' in Mexico evolved from a colonial-era misnomer (when Spanish colonizers mistakenly called the people 'Indians' because they thought they had landed in India) into a racial slur that places Indigenous people at the bottom of society's hierarchy, reflecting systemic discrimination that persists today.

Why “Indio” Hits Differently in Mexico #consciouscomadres #mexico #podcast #latinapodcast #cultureAdded:
That and that's a slur in Mexico, so like for example, I remember like one time we were driving in Mexico is different. Like if you think of Mexico, think of India. Like when you see traffic, like driving is it's crazy over there. And like some guy like ran across the street or he was on a bike and the guy honked at him and he was like "Pinche indio" which means like you [ __ ] like Indian. And that's really mean. That's Yeah, that's really mean.
But because it's a slur because it you're like at the bottom of the pedestal basically. Like you're the Okay, so I actually have no idea that it was a slur. Like Yeah. Like this is crazy and again, this just goes to show the lack of education that is in our culture because I grew up understanding that that was a normal word that that that was kind of like equivalent to the word indigenous. And so whenever I would talk to my grandpa and I would ask him like what are we? Like what what makes up our ethnicity? He would say "Soy parte indio." I did not know that that was a slur. That's crazy. Yeah.
Yeah, so I looked it up. It says Well, I looked up "Why is Indian a slur in Mexico?" It says "In Mexico, the term indio Indian is often used as racial slur due to deeply rooted systemic discrimination stemming from colonial era era hierarchies." Yeah, so it's just hierarchical. Like you're just at the bottom of the pedestal.
