Beta blockers may potentially inhibit weight loss on GLP-1 medications, but typically cause only modest weight gain rather than significant weight gain like antipsychotic medications; the impact varies based on the specific beta blocker type, dosage, and individual factors such as diabetes status, and while they may reduce weight loss efficacy, they usually do not completely prevent successful weight loss outcomes.

GLP-1 Weight Loss Messed Up By THIS? (Obesity Doctor FAQ)Added:
Okay, this person's on ompic 2 milligrams a week. No weight loss, but good for their A1C. Is weight loss potential inhibited by I'm Dr. Megan.
I'm an obesity medicine physician and weight loss coach, helping you cut through the noise and pseudocience in weight care. My approach combines evidence-based medicine with real behavioral change. So, you don't just take medications, you actually transform your health. Stick around for clear medically based answers to your weight questions. Welcome to Frequently Asked Questions. Okay, this person's on ompic 2 milligrams a week, no weight loss, but good for their A1C. Is weight loss potential inhibited by beta blocker? Uh, great question. So, beta blockers are a category of medication that potentially can interfere with weight loss or can cause weight gain. Um, in my clinical experience, it hasn't been as uh as troublesome as other medications.
Um, but it certainly is potentially slightly disruptive. Now, for me, uh, in terms of, you know, on the scale of least to most troublesome, I would probably put it at the lower end. Um, it's not like a medication like some of the antiscychotic medications where people can gain like 50 pounds, 100 pounds, but there can be some modest weight gain and there are some studies that show that as well. So, I think it's not one that we typically think of as contributing to weight gain, but um, it is potentially something that could be fighting. Do I think it's going to be really prevent somebody from having any kind of um weight loss at all on a medication? No. I think it's definitely for most people, I would not be suspecting that, you know, if they weren't getting results that that was the one thing. But it also depends on, you know, what the dose is for somebody.
If their beta blocker was really high, um it could could potentially be um an impediment. So the answer to that question, the broad question of do beta blockers cause weight gain, the answer is yes. In terms of how much it's going to interfere with somebody's particular results, I think it's a really case by case scenario. Depends on the type of beta blocker, depends on the dose, um, and depends on the weight medication that they're on. Also depends on, you know, if somebody is on a beta blocker and has diabetes, those are two things that are not going to give them great results. So, or not going to maybe optimize their results that they'd have necessarily on a GLP-1 medication. But the short answer to that question is beta blockers could um potentially inhibit weight loss on one of these medications. But I usually don't expect it to like obliterate somebody's chances of being successful on the medications.
But that is a great conversation if um if you are somebody out there on a beta blocker. This is a good conversation to continue with your doctor if you are also on one of these medications. So great question. Thank you so much. If you have a question afterwards, you can definitely leave it on this video and I will add it to the list. And if you want to take your results to the next level, if you feel like I am on a GLP1, but I'm leaving results on the table because I can't get my eating where I want it to be. I can't get my exercise where I want it to be. Like you, these are all things that can be fixed. And I do this for people all the time. Um, so if you want to hear more about how to maximize your results on the medication, I will leave all that info down below.
