This video demonstrates two key craft techniques: efficient thread management in cross-stitch by attaching remaining thread to future sections rather than winding it onto bobbins, and organizing scrap yarn into containers by size to maximize usage in projects like granny squares. The creator shows how these organizational strategies help maintain project momentum and reduce waste.

Finish it Friday # 84: What Am I Working on Next?
Added:Hi everyone, it's me Terry of the Yarn Joy podcast. Happy Friday everybody.
It's time for another episode of Finish It Friday. So last week the little piece of paper that I drew out of my container here was uh it just said crossstitch.
And so that's what I've been working on focusing more on um than what I usually put into it each week. Um, and the one I've been working on is the Christmas cross stitch because I needed to do day eight for the 12 days of Christmas for this month and I had very little done on it, started on it. So, uh, that's what I worked on and I am happy to say that it's not finished, but it is really close to being finished. So, just that section. Okay, so let me show you. So, there it is. I'm doing the 12 days of Christmas. Let me move this magnet out of the way so you can see things better.
Okay, so I'm doing 12 days of Christmas and uh I started in not November. I said November last time. It I started in December and I did day one. Okay. So then each of the numbers I'm doing one per month and so the numbers are one ahead. So for July instead of the I know it's the seventh month but I am doing day I was doing day eight and so that is eight maids of milk milking and so I'm working on my little milk made there and I have gotten all the cross stitch done. I just have to do some outlining on her still and then I've gotten all this side done. I need to do some leaves down here at the bottom. I'm peeking around the corner here so I can see. Um, and then let's see. I have the eight is outlined. This side right here is all done. So, just I have to do some leaves right here and then do the the the vines that connect the leaves together, the stems, right?
And then I have to, like I said, I have to I have her her face outlined, but I need to outline the rest of her body.
Now, I will bring it up closer. Let me see. I'm looking to see so you can see it better. Except now the lighting is getting weird. But anyway, there it is right there.
So, I did a whole lot on her. So, all these are done. Now, this um this goes down below. There you go. Okay. So yeah, I have all these strings because what I have the way I mentioned before is that when I finish a color and I still have a pretty good amount of thread left instead of uh I do, you know, fasten it off and snip it, but then instead of winding it back on the bobin, I've been looking down like ahead the squares I have yet to do to see if I need that same color somewhere else. And if I do, then I attach it where it's going to go.
Like for example, this red right here. I got finished with the number eight over there. And so I had some left over. I didn't want to w um w wind this on the bobbins. So I just knew that this number nine here, that green is that same red. And so I just attached it over here. Right here. And so when I get to day day nine, which will be next month, I will that's the first thing I do is I take these loose threads that are connected in that particular area and I finish them off. You know, that's what I did with eight. I had some hanging. So that's what I'm doing. That way, um, it'll give me a start.
Something's already in its spot, but, um, it keeps me from having to wind up small pieces of thread onto the bobin.
Okay. So, I'm going to finish this up for this month. Like I said, little bit le little bit left to do, but I am going to go ahead and pick a new finish it Friday project. Okay. But I will be working on this because I want to finish it up before the end of the month. And then when it's finished, I have to uh adjust my scroll frame and pull because this is see the bottom is like under there. And so I have to adjust it. roll it up here at the top and unroll it some at the bottom to get the access to the bottom squares. Anyway, there it's looking and I can show you the back.
It's a mess. I mean, I need to go back and everything is secured pretty much, but I'll have to go back and like trim excess stuff, but I'm not real picky about what it looks like in the back, so nobody's going to see that. So, anyway, there it is. is my progress. I got a lot done on it because that maid right there, the maids of milking. Uh I think I only had maybe her head and maybe a little bit around the neckline on her chest area and then that was it. So I had to do all that stitching and I f I did the eight. I got that outline. So I mean I did a big amount and I had I did some Oh, I did some French knots right here in this center column because I forgot to do them when I was doing day seven. So, I did I did get those done.
So, yeah, I'm I'm happy with how much progress I got on that. So, now let me pick the next project here. I did take out the cross stitch paper so that way I won't pick it again. You know, it' be something different. So, let me go ahead and take the lid off, scramble it up here, and we will see what the next um what it's going to be. Okay.
Okay, I got a piece of paper.
Let's see what it's going to be here.
It's folded up pretty small.
It is Oh, more granny stitch. So, this says scrappy granny square. So, let me get that and we'll talk about it.
Okay. So, this is just a scrappy project that I started back in Vlogmas, I think, when I had some um leftover of the scrap balls swap that I was doing with Terin.
And so, whatever whatever I had that I I didn't put in the project that I was doing for that time with the scrap balls, what I what I had left of the scrap balls, I would you I would put it in this. So, it's just a granny square.
And I am not turning each each time turning my work. So the square is getting kind of wonky in the middle probably. Yeah. But I don't care. It's a scrappy project and I'm just going round and round and round. You know, adding this is worsted weight. So I'm adding worst of weight to it. And it's getting to be a good size. I haven't measured it. Let me see if I can measure it. Here it is. About course it's stretching a little bit probably. It's about 32 inches square, something like that. So, I am going to um that that's what I'm going to be working on this week. Now, that tag down there hanging in the middle, that is just a tag to tell me what it's a 5.5. It says that's what hook I'm using. But yeah, all the ends are weaved in. I'm using the magic knot when I change colors. And uh so I've got it's all weaved in except for the very last one where I need to connect the new color. So, I am just using worsted weight scraps.
And I'm trying not to have real big sections of color, you know, uh trying not to. Although that pink, yeah, this this light pink right there, I must have used a lot of it because it goes all all the way around it. I was trying to kind of change colors where I'm not um have real big sections of color. Like, see that green? And I started down there and I ended right there. So, um, yeah, I've got a container over here that's got scrap balls in it. Small scrap balls. And then I have, of course, a bigger bin that's got more that's just that's worsted weight, but they're bigger balls. But I will start with those small ones in that container over there. Let me get it. I'm gonna get I'll show you. Hang on. Okay. Good thing I looked. I didn't realize, but I have three containers of worst of weight.
Small amounts, but there are they are worst of weight. So, I've has I have this one with my little frog sticker there on the container.
And then I have this one.
Does this one have a sticker? No. So, I've got this one that's all worsted.
And I also have this one. This is the one I was going to show you. My my uh animal cracker container. This is one I showed you before where it's making it looks like a face because it's shaped like a teddy bear because it had animal crackers in it. But and these black stickers for the eyes, they were there and so I just left them on there.
Although this one's time to peel off, but yeah, that it's molded to look like a teddy bear. I don't know if you can tell that. But u and then these balls just ended up there making accentuating the face plus the feet too.
So anyway, so yeah, I've got three containers of worsted weight.
So definitely I'm going to be using these and see if I can cut down.
Maybe I can at least get it down to two containers.
Maybe I'll challenge myself to see if I can do that. And maybe by that time um it'll be plenty large enough that I'll go ahead and finish it off. So, you know, finish off the project. So maybe by next Friday I will be um I will be finished with it. So let me get my container here and I'm going to put the uh the the cross stitch paper that I had taken out so I wouldn't pick it. I'm going to put that back in there.
Okay. So there is my project for this next week. Easygoing project. Um, I want to say mindless. I don't have to think a whole lot about it. Uh, and so I will just be working on this granny um granny stitch scrappy blanket and then we will see how much how much of this see if I can work my way down. Like I said, let me put that right there. So, I can work down to at least maybe get down to two containers instead of three. And this one's a bigger one. So, yeah, I'm going to do that. So, I hope you're having a great day. I hope you've had a great week and um I hope that you have a great weekend coming up. Tomorrow is my youngest son's birthday. He's going to be 24. My baby is going to be 24 and so we'll be doing something with, you know, with him for this weekend, but I'll let you know. Um I don't know if plans have settled exactly yet. I do know what he was wanting us to get him for his birthday.
So, we just need to go and go and pick it up. But anyway, um he wants a car washing kit so that he can start washing his truck instead of going to the car wash. He'll have to check on water restrictions, but right now it's been raining so much I don't think there's water restrictions at the moment. So anyway, um yeah, I I'll let you know how that goes this weekend and what we ended up doing and and um I'll of course let you know all that on Tuesday. But I hope that you're going to have a great week. Um I think it's going to start getting it was cooler the last few days because of the rain that we got, but I think it's supposed to start getting a little hotter. I think now it's real humid out there because of the rain that we got. Anyway, I'll stay inside mostly.
Okay, I'm gonna go. Uh, what did I work on today? Well, I just uh was working on that cross stitch, but now that I've got that done, um I'm not sure. I I'll work on something. I've got that uh fourth, which is the third brown beanie. I need to make one more. So, that would give me four hats for the month. And so, maybe I will work on the pieces for that for those. Uh I can do that this evening.
I'll work on that. Oh, somebody had great, in fact, I think I had more than one suggestion of this scarecrow project that I was working on, and I was saying how, oh, I didn't want to have to make another one of these panels because of all the single crochets. Somebody had suggested me cutting doing fabric on the back or felt or something like that. Um, I do think that it needs something on the back because that'll help um where it'll lay flat and it won't curl and all that stuff. I have to see. Maybe I can just finish the edge. Anyway, that's a great idea. That way I don't have to do another one of these. I do have a pretty big piece of brown felt which would be perfect for this and it just going to be on the backside anyway. So, I think that's a wonderful idea. Thank you so much for suggesting those that that did suggest that. I think that's a great idea. So, I'm going to keep going, working on this, making the facial features that I need, and then uh what I'll do is I'll lay this down on the felt and then just cut around it and then stitch it on uh when the time comes, you know, when I finish the front part. Anyway, I think that's great. So, um yeah, I'm just going to be working on projects and I'll of course let you know what I what I've worked on. I still need to make the edging on this Jada and Stitches square. So, I will be working on that as well. Okay, I'm gonna go.
Have a great weekend this weekend and um come back on Tuesday and we will have another visit for Blanket Bonanza. I did pick a yarn that I'm going to be using and so I'll excited to show you what what yarn I'm going to be using for it.
I did end up using a wor picking out some worsted worsted weight for the blanket and I think I'm going to have plenty and I'll just make it. It probably will be bigger than a baby blanket. Probably it'll just be like a child's blanket and it'll be one that I will be able to donate to uh Project Lionus. So yeah, um I think that'll be great. And uh I I've done a little bit of it enough to see what the colors are going to be doing because it is a striped type yarn. And so, um, I think it's going to look good. So, I want to work on it some more, but I knew I had to work on these other projects. So, I will be working on it this weekend, though. So, then I'll have a good amount to show you on Tuesday. And um, yeah.
Oh, that's my that's my my uh watch. I forgot to put it on silent. Sorry. So, I'm going to go have a great weekend, like I said, and uh, come back on Tuesday. We'll get back together and I'll let you know what I did over the weekend and um we'll start the week off, the next week off. Okay, have a great evening today and weekend and come back Tuesday and we'll have another visit.
Bye-bye.
