This video explores how global supply chains create vulnerabilities, as demonstrated by an interview with an Arco distribution center employee in Hull who explains that most PPE products come from China, the Far East, and Malaysia. The employee discusses how the pandemic exposed these weaknesses, leading to increased interest in localized UK manufacturing to reduce dependency on international suppliers and improve supply chain resilience.

You Can't Video Here Or Fly Your Drone, It's Private PropertyAdded:
Hi everybody, PJ here and I'm still in Kingston upon Hull commonly known as Hull [laughter] and we're at a massive Arco distribution center. Now this place is really really big.
It uh well you can see the uprightes on the um on the side of the building.
They go all the way down.
All the way down there. Look.
It really is a big place. Look at it.
And then that gray building at the bottom, that's part of theirs as well.
So, it is a massive, massive place.
Um, it looks fancy with the uprightes. I suppose that's just structural engineering, I suppose.
How you doing?
>> There's no filming on here. It's private property.
>> All right, mate.
>> Uh, beyond that gate, you're on public land. I can't stop you.
>> Yeah. Yeah, >> but you're actually on private property.
>> Yeah. All right. I am going to fly a drone over in a bit as well.
>> What about the site?
>> Yeah.
Yeah. I'm going to fly a drone over.
Have you got permission, sir?
>> No, I don't need permission, mate. Call security. I did I met one of your fellas before at um legal in general.
>> Okay.
>> You're on security there. It's sunny.
New alley. Sorry, mate.
>> Yeah. Um leg did a did them at legal in general at um oh near leads there.
All right. Apparently they're uh at one time they were exforceer security company, weren't they?
>> Yeah. It was formed after the um Crimean War.
>> Crimean war. Yeah. He did tell me all about you ex forces.
>> No.
>> You what? Sorry.
>> We tried over to him. I was with G4S.
>> All right.
>> Contracts.
>> So group four took them over.
>> No cops took over from group four.
>> All right.
>> Contracts on here. So we we move in the new contractors, >> right? Okie do.
>> And we have to go back in, but I mean >> this is private property, so I know filming has got to be with permission of the land owner, >> right? Okie do.
>> Well, you'll know that.
>> Yeah, I know that, mate. But they can't stop me flying the drone over.
>> I mean, if you want to phone somebody and tell them that's fine. I shall be here.
>> Well, if they've got something to sell, it's my job to let them know.
>> Yeah.
>> For what reason? just to take a >> I make YouTube videos.
>> I make YouTube videos.
>> All right. Okay.
>> Um I travel all over. Well, I say all over the country, northeast England making videos from Birmingham up to Leads, Topside, Leadeds, out this side at Humber, Grimby, Cleops, all around there.
>> Yeah. Bit like Dogmuck. I'm everywhere.
>> Listen, I'm going to have to go.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's time, mate.
>> As long as you're made aware, you saw >> stepping onto the side and following.
>> No, I can't stop you.
>> I know that, mate.
>> All right.
>> Have a good day.
>> Anyway, as I was saying, these towers, uh, I think they're just there for, um, engineering support really. I think they could have done it but without them. But they do look impressive.
So, let's have a uh let's have a bit more of a photo of them. See if I can get them in a bit better. Let's have a look down here. If you have a look, you can see loads and loads of vehicles, loading bays, etc., etc. I bet these distribute all over well the north of England, I would say. I mean, I know Arco is a fairly large company, but I didn't think they'd ever um I didn't think they'd have a depot this big. It has take me by surprise, I'll be honest.
Right, I think it's uh getting close to dread drone time. I think we'll give it a few minutes, see if anybody comes out.
I'm sure security's phoned somebody and sooner or later somebody might come out.
Well, maybe. Anyway, >> I'm a golden.
>> Which depo are you from?
>> Oh, I did your place.
>> Yeah, I saw you.
>> Yeah. Yeah. They told me I couldn't fly my drone there.
>> Well, he's just asked me to leave here.
Very nice security people here, actually.
>> Yeah. But I am going to fly the drone over cuz it's a big place. This is it.
I never expected Arco to have a a place this size.
I really didn't.
See yourself on YouTube.
There you go. Everywhere I go, people know me, good or bad. [laughter] Right, then I think it's uh dread drone time. So, let's go and get my little baby out and we'll go and fly it and have a look at this massive, massive site.
Right. So, here we are. Aco now security. Nice people that they are. I do like the security at this company.
Um, core security.
Uh, I dealt with them once before. The gentleman there was an absolute gem. He really was. Uh, and this chap's no different at all. So, anyway, we got the dread drone up.
Going to do a bit of videoing and we're going to have a look at this site and see how big it is.
Now, look at that.
That is an extremely large roof.
And that in the background is the River Humber.
And if I turn the camera around, you'll be able to see the bridge in the distance. There you go. There's the bridge. Look.
So that's how far we are from the Humber Bridge. Well, that's not what we're here to see. We're here to see this enormous place.
I don't know what's around the other side. I know there's a busy uh dual carriageway on the other side. There you go. Look.
See these um these pylons that stick up in the air?
That's what attracted me to the place in the first place.
No solar panels I can see. Now that building at the end, that's part of theirs as well. That's the hose place that I visited earlier.
And as you can see, it's a small industrial estate with one big factory in the middle of it.
And it is a big place as well.
We'll have a run down a bit further anyway.
There you go. As you can see, enormous with the backdrop of the river Humber behind.
Wonderful city of Hull.
There's security.
Start fetching them back.
That's it. They're aiming at me.
Down she comes. Forward she comes.
We got vehicles coming in. So, we'll just uh wait while they've gone.
There's that good-looking fella. Look, that's me I'm talking about, by the way.
And we'll make sure we don't land on their property.
And there we go.
We're down.
Hey buddy, >> how you doing?
>> What you up to?
>> Just doing a bit of video with my friend.
>> Warning, disconnected.
>> Up in the lab.
>> You are sorry.
>> Just up in the lab wondering what you're up to. Very distracted.
>> Yeah.
>> Anything interesting?
>> Um, alcohol.
>> No. Okay, >> that's about it basically.
Anything you're trying to find out or >> No, I just um >> recording stopped.
>> There we go. Recording stopped. Um no, I just do industrial estates.
>> Oh, cool.
>> And um obviously this is a massive factory.
>> Not exiting the factory.
>> Warning. Sorry.
>> Disconnected.
>> Distribution center.
>> Distribution center. That's what I meant. Yeah.
So, uh, thought, well, you know, I'll have a quick look. I didn't expect Aroco because I think I bought my boots from Arco.
Um, I didn't expect Arco to have such a big distribution center, I'll be honest.
>> Yeah. Well, I mean, we are national now, so we So, this is now the only distribution center of the entire country.
>> All right.
>> So, we centralized everything about I don't know 10 years ago, >> right?
>> Um, so yeah, pretty much everything's done from here. So we ship in from a drawer here and then we hopefully goes back.
>> Right. So it comes in uncontained gets sorted and batched and >> and picked and sent out to your depots.
>> Yeah. I bought my bought uh quite a bit of stuff from AO in uh in Sheffield there.
You got quite a good shop in Sheffield.
>> Yeah. Yeah. We got them all over nowadays.
>> Yeah. But yeah, um cuz we used to um have a lot of storage on site like in the stores. So like she said, we've had it own little warehouse behind it.
>> Yeah.
>> Um but now we've just just built them here.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Have you been?
>> Um no, but I have seen videos of it.
>> All right.
>> So I've been to been to the London one, >> but to the Manchester one here.
>> Oh, work in the lab. So we test all of our products here. So they come in and every one in 100 or one in a thousand's tested or what?
>> Pretty much. Yeah. Yeah. We just basically run them through all the tests they say they can pass based on the certifications they've got and make sure they can.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Because if they can't, you send them out then you >> Well, cuz Yeah. So we can put blocks on if there's any problems and things like that.
>> Yeah.
>> You got a lot of stuff in from China.
>> Most of it is. Yeah. Um so a lot of respiratory stuff is from places like Sweden. Um, but the majority of PPE tends to come from China or the Far East in general and Malaysia.
>> Everything comes from bloody China now though, isn't it?
>> It's a shame. I mean, we are starting to think about trying to sort of centralize. So, we've got a new eco range which we're doing um and that's based out of England. And also there's this new um reproducibility, recycling of um plastics. So we're recycling them into sort of they're quite >> not tip top level garments, but they're like reasonable level quality garments and they're complete recycle. So it's kind of >> bit of a balancing act, but we're working on the process and hopefully we get a bit so we can get them to be high quality garments at the end of the day.
But um >> not there yet. [laughter] >> Well, I mean for me it makes sense to manufacture in UK.
>> Yeah. No, >> you know, spending a fortune shipping a boat. I mean, I know it's only pennies per item when you're talking about containers folk, >> but it's still employing people over there instead of employing people here.
>> Yeah. And and I >> the carbon footprint of dragging it over is >> it's it's more than that as well, I think, is that centralizing. So, for example, when you look at um what happened during CO, that really was a big um wakeup call, especially to us because we realized that we then have to get into a massive bidding war with every other place that wants um PPE over what we can get out of China. So, if we >> places in China closed down >> Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. So, if we localized our production, we'd be a bit more robust.
>> But our main main problem we have is we don't want to become integrated like vertically integrated. We don't want to own our own factories, which is why we have a little bit less say over where we get our product from because there aren't very many factories that are doing it in England at the moment.
But there's a couple of factories that are interested. We are looking at it.
>> Well, I'm sure if you approach companies that are say a bit scrap for cash or a bit low on work at the moment and and I know quite a few places are.
>> They'd be interested in contracts. You think so anyway, wouldn't you?
>> Well, yeah. I mean, so there's a new range of um respiratory PPE that we're trying to source in the UK, >> which um it's a the company that we're trying to source them from um has a company that's based in Halifax, I think it is.
>> Yeah.
>> Um and so that's going to be one of our core offerings when it comes to our call half masks. Um, >> I don't know what I'm talking about anyway cuz I'm using the made in China drone and >> that's the only place I'm getting them from.
>> Made in China cameras.
>> Yeah. Right. I need to get back to work.
>> Okay. What's your name?
>> I'm Jeremy.
>> I'm Peter.
>> Nice to meet you, Peter.
>> All right. Jeremy is my middle name.
>> Oh, really?
>> Yeah.
>> Well, well, >> there you go. Catch you later. Thanks for your time.
