Why running in the same temperature feels very different in sun versus shade? Have you ever noticed this? So, 35° C temperature in the shade feels manageable, but step into direct sunlight and suddenly it's like 45° C.
Same temperature, completely different experience. Why so? Because heat is just not about air temperature. It's also about something called solar load. Let's simplify this. When you run in the shade, you're dealing mostly with air temperature, but when you run in direct sun, you're adding radiant heat. Heat coming directly from the sun onto your body. And there's more.
The road beneath you, especially black asphalt, absorbs heat and radiates it back at you. So, now you're getting heat from above, from below, and around. And your body has to deal with all of it.
Now, that's why the same 35° C day can feel 10 to 15° C hotter in direct sunlight. Now, this is just not about perception. It's physics. It's physiology at play. Because now your body has more heat to get rid of. So, what does it do? It sweats more. It sends more blood to the skin. Heart rate rises faster. Fatigue comes in earlier.
And if humidity is high, cooling becomes even harder. So, suddenly you feel exhausted earlier, much earlier than expected. And then we think, "I'm not fit." But often it's just not about that. It's actually about solar load. Now, here's what it becomes where it becomes really practical, really if you think about it.
So, running in shade is not taking it easy. It's reducing heat stress.
Choosing early morning is just not about time. It's about avoiding direct radiation.
Even wearing a cap or covering your head with whatever it be reduces how much heat your body absorbs.
