Jacksonville homeowners say Massey Contracting took thousands

[00:00:00]Action News Jax learning more about a popular Jacksonville contractor being accused of taking deposits for roof work but never following up to complete the job. We told you at 5:00 when a group of homeowners said that they paid thousands in deposits to Massey Contracting. Well, now Action News Jax Dejah Mayfield has learned the company's owner is also facing some legal trouble, too, Dejah.

[00:00:22]Yeah, Tanika, I found a lawsuit online from a former employee of Massey Contracting who is now suing the owner, Chase Massey, for unpaid wages totaling more than $36,000.

[00:00:35]I also found that's not the only lawsuit Massey is facing.

[00:00:41]All communications have disappeared.

[00:00:43]>> We want a refund check. We didn't hear from after that. These Northeast Florida homeowners are accusing Chase Massey of Massey Contracting of taking their deposits but never servicing their roof.

[00:00:56]Between the homeowners, they paid more than $42,000 in deposits but claim the contractor ghosted them when it was time to follow through with the job.

[00:01:05]>> I am over the top frustrated, yeah.

[00:01:08]Yeah, very frustrated.

[00:01:10]>> Yeah. Now, Action News Jax has uncovered a list of lawsuits against the company's owner. In March, Massey's former employee, Dean Richardson, filed this lawsuit against the contractor for unpaid wages totaling more than $36,000.

[00:01:25]We also uncovered four different lawsuits against the contractor where commercial lenders accuse Massey of taking upfront cash for his business and failing to pay it back. Online court records show two of those lenders have since dropped the lawsuits, but the remaining cases are still being litigated. In those cases, court records show Massey is on the hook for more than $440,000.

[00:01:51]What do you say to that?

[00:01:53]>> When we talked to Massey over the phone, he He us that the lawsuit from his former employee is being worked out.

[00:01:59]>> Our lawyers are dealing with that and that's commission-based stuff. And as for the lawsuits from the finance companies, he says those debts are clear. Those have been paid off. I've dealt with a lot of homeowners in the area, so this is kind of disheartening to hear, uh, but I you know, we'll get it fixed.

[00:02:21]And we did reach out to that former employee of Massey Contracting about the lawsuit he filed, but he declined to comment. We also learned that once we started asking questions and calling around to talk to Chase Massey, the homeowners we interviewed in our 5:00 story say Chase Massey has now been in contact with him.
