Google Antigravity 2.0 Just Faceplanted - A DevRel Failure in Real TimeAdded:
Today, what a day.
Especially if you're a Google anti-gravity customer like myself.
And note just hours ago I was already on the fence about dropping this product and they've sort of given me maybe a little bit more ammunition to just go and do that. Why you might ask?
Well, you know, if you if you're like me and you're within your Google anti-gravity and you're within this, you know, IDE that you've been in for months and you see that hey, there is an update. What do you know?
They've up they say put out an update for the first time in what's what's it been? Like well over a month?
So you let the update run.
You go through the flow of getting quote unquote set up.
Then you find out authentication doesn't work. The OAuth flow into Google is broken.
And you're thinking I guess I'll just keep trying and you do.
And I probably tried well over 30 times. Yeah.
And you finally get into this 2.0 to find out it is not an IDE like what you were just using.
That's right.
They took your IDE and made it a chatbot.
Oh, and by the way, you may not you may not even realize that there actually is an IDE. It's just you got to go download it.
Right. You understand you were in the IDE. Now you're in a chatbot you but you got to go download the IDE.
So if you if you can imagine in terms of developer relations, uh the history of Google, this is probably one of the biggest screw-ups, the biggest blunders, the biggest face palms that Google's probably ever done.
Like this is just as frustrating as What was it about 10 years ago they did the big rug pull on Google Maps, right? This This is like just as big as that in my mind.
Because it goes to show that that companies are so focused on we'll say the agentic future that they're they're actually stopping to even care or consider about transition periods or their current customer base. So, in the eyes of Google, it feels like they just like, "Hey, you know, we got this amazing new product. Just push them into it."
And you're like, "That's that's not how you do these things, right?"
And so And so, when I got into that 2.0, you see on the sidebar on the left-hand side, there's a bunch of projects, and you realize, "Oh, wait a second. They created a {quote} project basically for every time you ever chatted with Jim and I within antigravity before this update."
And if you're like me and you didn't know that this IDE was another thing that you would have to go install, you would find yourself like removing projects.
And for myself, that was uh 40, 50 Like, it's a lot.
And you think, "You're okay. I'm starting fresh. Let me get my project attached." You get into it, and then you're like, "No.
There is no There's truly no IDE here."
You go on the You go on X. You look and see, "Huh.
You're not alone."
Um So, you go through the website, and there's probably They must have had a caching issue because if you go on the web on the website and you went through the drop-downs, and you went to the IDE, and then you went to download, it it actually took me back to the antigravity 2.0 download.
And I ended up having to do a couple of refreshes, and what do you know, I guess whatever cache they had, you know, obviously busted. And after For the third try, when you would go to to click on the anti-gravity IDE to download, what do you know, you could actually download a separate, you know, uh file installer.
Well, this takes me to what's on the screen this whole time.
You know, privacy is is important to people.
And the biggest frustration on the screen you're going to see is if you read what's on the screen, neither of these options I want to participate in. No, Google, I don't want to give you uh my data to to help you figure out how to how we interact cuz frankly, you didn't care how I interacted from the start or you wouldn't pushed me into these product flows like this.
And the second checkbox, you're basically saying, well, we want to be able to spam you.
Well, let's say you you say you're like me and you don't want to do both.
When you uncheck them, they're you can't even you can't even go you can't even finish this process.
Meaning that if you want to participate in using this product, note, I am a paying customer already.
You have to basically opt in to whatever on earth they're going to do with your stuff.
This, in terms [snorts] of privacy, is a it's it's such a mess-up a such a screw-up.
And it goes to show why Google took the quote-unquote don't be evil out of their slogan.
I mean, they I mean, gosh, I mean, they're pulling a Dario right now. They're basically saying we don't care about you, but dang it, we want your data.
But we don't care about the changes we put on you. We don't care that we throw you into workflows. We don't care that, you know, we're throw we're forcing an experience upon you that you weren't expecting.
And we're sort of just hoping that it breezes over.
So, I was already on the fence early this morning when I got up cuz I'm like I'm so tired of this ID already and then, you know what?
Think this is going to be the one that does it for me, people.
And don't get me wrong, anti-gravity sucked enough because frankly couldn't use any of the the latest Gemini models.
You tap out in 10 10 minutes. Yes.
10 minutes.
So, I don't know what is going on at Google or who is leading these projects, but you have com you've screwed up big time.
And I feel like I'm not going to be alone.
And I don't know what to say for the rest of this video.
But I got to go find a new ID now.
