This video explores the tension between traditional community support systems (harambee) and individual responsibility in modern African society, using examples like Mike Sonko's decision to fund his daughter's wedding independently and a court ruling recognizing cohabiting relationships. The discussion highlights how cultural practices like harambee have evolved from genuine community support to potentially exploitative systems, while also examining how legal systems are adapting to recognize modern relationship dynamics beyond traditional marriage certificates.

Yeah.
Yeah. [laughter] >> It's just a random day. That is a random Monday, Tuesday in Luanda.
>> Yes.
>> There's nothing out of the world that happened there. It's just someone and their TX in the farm.
>> Yeah.
>> There's nothing new.
>> That's true.

>> [laughter] >> Looking for horsepower.
>> My vehicle has intercooler.
>> Mhm.

>> Can't buy that. HERE IN SOFTWARE.
[laughter] THAT ISN'T still software.
[clears throat] >> Hey, what do you think about this clip?
Anywhere else in the world apart from Luanda?
>> Mhm.
>> [laughter] >> Any comments, Harry?
>> Uh yes. Yes, of course. If it works, it works. But if it works and it's not elegant, it's not Lu.
>> Hey.
>> You are the more Lu than I am.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, man.
>> You are more Lu.
>> Yeah.
>> All right, let's go on to the next one.
This one has really divided people. So, some say that the painter went too far, but others feel like he was justified after delivering a service and not getting paid. Many service providers know what it means to be taken advantage of. It's okay to stay calm and not lose your cool, but it's also important to set boundaries and make sure people respect your work. If someone delivers, they deserve to be paid. And when life gets frustrating like this, sometimes the best thing is to take a breather and indulge in a little in a little Grab your favorite Delamere yogurt, rich, creamy, made with real fruit and cool, you know, cool off before your your next move. Have you ever actually taken advantage of that?
Maybe someone didn't pay you or undervalued your work. What did you do?
Check out this clip and tell me what you think.
Yes. What was your story?
>> [laughter] >> Okay. First of all, I I am all for people who are doing good work and it is good work. Just pay them.
>> [clears throat] >> You need to pay for the for the work they've done for you.
>> [laughter] >> Is it not my energy? Let me tell you Nyanduko.
Let me tell you something.
What what I will get in the bottom of it.
>> Yeah, today you be a physical activity. YEAH, LATER.
>> [laughter] >> SUPERMAN.
BUT NORMALLY CRAZY.
Come No, don't go and complain.
Now you don't have any endorsements anymore. Yeah.
But So you you found other ways of dealing with it. Yes, of course. Harry, what do you think about this whole thing?
Sometimes you have to show people you're you're a bit crazy.
We'll show there's a bit of craziness in there. Otherwise, if you just let people go and let them walk all over you, what does that Okay. Harry is like this.
So they'll keep taking advantage of you.
Again.
Oh, that's tough.
>> [laughter] >> Let's sign the documents. documents.
Exactly.
>> [laughter] >> What documents?
So, like so you can start to develop some form of feeling. So now you know you have no key. So they're using that against you where they disruption of the contract through personal relations.
I see the success and I Halingham Tafadhali kuna pesa na mapenzi feelings So tafadhali kuwa rada potea In fact mutumia madisai kama unachanganyikiwa I fall [laughter] I mean I mean >> You need this money for us, BABE.
>> I >> [laughter] >> I >> [laughter] >> USIMFUATE BADO DON'T DO THAT.
>> I'M NOT GOING TO DO THAT.
>> But kuna mtu mwenye alidecide to take matters in their own hands. There's a very famous building around the Halingham and Nini area. And this famous building it had a So one side is very famous and then Kaspiskidogo and then this other side is very famous. Uh you'd realize that since 1993, this one half has never been used.
Because contractor ilifika mahali malipeni alilipa pesa yake. What do they do?
He was a foreigner. So the politician at that time was like, "Me I'm going to use my muscle to actually throw this guy out."
Uh By the way, by tomorrow this is what's going to happen to you. The guy used his wisdom.
>> toilet washroom >> Yes. So it was not actually the washroom. It was through the piping of the sewer.
kukasolidify So when you flush it comes back you.
I'll see you.
>> [laughter] >> Hello.
allows you to go back to together we're together. Now, one thing I'm not going to allow is uh to go back to the center is is it good is to go up there?
I don't know what what your flavor. Just look at the flavors and tell me what What's your What's your flavor up there?
What's your flavor up there?
Just tell me what a very able company that I can get it to my >> [laughter] >> Your favorite flavor is a concoction of every other flavor.
>> Thank you very much.
>> vanilla Vanilla. It's the classic old school.
>> You know.
>> Amazing, right?
>> Yeah.
>> wild wild dreams >> Thank you.
>> lemon biscuit you add it on to wild berries >> [clears throat] >> lemon biscuit and then more And then what's your favorite?
>> lemon biscuit >> lemon biscuit >> all day any day >> Yeah. See lemon biscuit >> lemon biscuit >> lemon biscuit biscuit >> Yeah.
>> biscuit me there We're going to take a short commercial break, but as you do that, remember to grab your Delamere. It helps you cool down. Because you will enjoy every moment. Yeah. You'll see what I've done there. Let's take a break and of course on the other half of the break we have so many crazy stories including but I don't ask any comment to go get a World Cup busy.
Uh one story that stands out with me this guy called article keeper >> [laughter] >> Uh I didn't know football like you 25 and of course professionally and that's considered a late age to actually start.
But at 40 you see he's been remembered by the world. Nduku, what stood what stands out for you in this World Cup?
>> Did you see the dancing?
>> I know he can speak it.
>> Yeah.
>> But another thing that that stood out for me is the fact that Americans that Americans didn't even know they have a team.
>> Yeah.
>> They were like, "Huh yeah, wait, we we are participating?"
>> Yeah.
>> I thought we are hosting to be nice.
We have a team. It was just beautiful to see.
>> [laughter] >> Yes.
>> What do you think about this whole World Cup? I know you love England.
>> Well, well, it started tipsy because of all you know how the whole visa immigration people being blocked out being barred out by the U.S.
You could also see how different teams were treated when they were in Africa Mexico how they were greeted. The ones Senegal were put on the tarmac and searched. They were like, "Are they criminals? What's happening?" We also saw that referee I don't know his name from Somalia. Yeah, who was barred from going in after I don't know his name the ticket going in there. You know, it was it was a lot of that. But when the game started um it became interesting.
It became interesting. because of all the first of all I'll just go back to South Africa against Mexico. We were wearing a lot of maracas.
>> Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> How long do you guys think Kenya will take to ever participate in a World Cup?
>> It's long. long, it's very [laughter] long.
Dedicate Kenya Kenya a song. It's been a long long long long long long time.
>> [laughter] >> Anyways, I just want to tell you a story that the minute I picked up a ball is Yanga Di Mundi.
>> Okay.
>> With the progression of grassroots football. When I say about 20 years ago if he wouldn't have been discovered, right?
>> Yeah.
>> But thanks to his sister and the scouting that that is going on around right now, he's been able to play in the highest levels of football. Right now big European teams are are struggling.
>> Mhm.
>> He's trying to get his signature. He's putting in man of the match performances.
>> Yeah.
>> And to see such a story from a person who is just like me.
>> Yeah.
>> I'm a just like this one over here.
>> I do me a >> [laughter] >> Do me a way.
Do me a way.
>> [laughter] >> This is an inspiring story. Apart from that the breaks the water the water hydration breaks.
>> Yo, really?
>> You know you can ruin football.
>> I okay.
>> Mhm.
>> are doing football as though it's basketball and that's quite sad.
>> Mhm.
>> Football has never been done in quarters, you know, we are doing quarters, water breaks in between.
>> Mhm.
>> The worst part about water breaks is adverts playing in between.
>> Yeah.
>> money has been poured. I understand there's so much [clears throat] money to be spent or even saved or to be made.
>> Mhm.
>> But it's quite sad that we are having quarters in between.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
You know, it's quite [clears throat] sad.
>> I am >> We are talking about national team.
>> So much happening. Ghana won their game.
That's a great run. Leopards Yeah.
It was my goat being eaten by the leopard.
>> [laughter] >> He was not eaten.
Okay. Okay.
That's not drawing things into >> [laughter] >> What was the >> Do you know that in in certain states in the US they have run out of beer because of the Scottish?
>> Oh.
>> The Scots are Some places have run out of beer, man.
>> The Scots have done it in so many days.
Kenyans were there.
>> Uh let's go on to the next one. A gospel artist says he'd rather get a vasectomy than have his wife deal with birth control side effects. That has sparked a huge conversation on sacrifice in relationships. Is this the ultimate act of love or too extreme? How far should people go for their partners?
Uh shared responsibility in family planning. We want to find out. Modern men stepping up. What sacrifice looks uh like in relationships. We definitely want to see that.
Harry You are the only one who can explain to us a vasectomy. [laughter] What is the right word?
This guy is going to get to share Harry, you better talk to us and tell us for the very first time what is a vasectomy.
>> W- What One thing I I Okay, fine. I'll I'll I'll describe what it is, but one thing I don't know is is it reversible?
Is vasectomy >> Some say it is. Some say it is.
>> We're going to clip him and then >> A vasectomy is where uh the epididymis is shut off from getting you know epididymis >> [laughter] [laughter] >> You told me to explain and that's that's WHAT I'M DOING.
ANYWAYS, IT'S A FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL that is primarily for men. I don't know if women have epididymises.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> I Thank you for the explainer, but what do you think about this whole thing?
This gospel artist coming out rightly to say, you know what? I'd rather go through a vasectomy and actually protect my woman from using birth control. Is that the highest form of love? Is that the highest level of sacrifice?
>> The highest form of love is I'll take care of your kids.
>> What?
>> Yeah.
No, our you see our is responsibility.
No, no. Our kids' responsibility, but your kids'?
>> What?
>> That is more love.
>> What do you mean?
>> Let me tell you.
>> highest form of love >> has put in the consideration that you might be told that you're the father.
>> [laughter] >> But are you sure that YOU'RE THE FATHER?
YOU HAVE TO SAY MY YOUR MY FATHER. YES, but to give DNA test, you know.
So, what do you have to say about this gospel artist saying that, you know what? He'd rather be the one going through a vasectomy.
Whatever Yeah, whatever led him to make it into making that decision.
Me I I I let life choose its course.
>> Mhm.
>> Is it reversible?
>> Mhm.
>> So I can't decide on such a thing.
>> Okay. So, you can't make a decision to have a vasectomy.
>> [laughter] >> By the way, there's a there's a male contraceptive.
You people need to know that.
advanced like those serious things come up. Because you have tubal ligation that is for the for the women and also vasectomy is for the men. So, They have their reasons. Yeah, I'm saying what works for that couple >> might not be what >> Whatever you say on this topic someone someone will be listening and it will be used.
>> Yes.
>> [laughter] [clears throat] [laughter] >> I am moving to the next one. Mike Sonko, uh former governor Nairobi, has sparked conversation after making it clear there will be no harambee for his daughter's wedding.
That move has reignited debate around how weddings are funded and growing expectations that come with them. Uh do you think weddings today say uh have actually become too expensive? Should people plan within their means or is community support still an important part of the culture? Is harambee culture still necessary or being overused?
So, I'll give the balance today.
So, God bless you all.
Thank you so much, gentlemen.
In other words, I want you to I know you got to transport 100,000.
Mike Sonko, if you're watching this, there's four African children who are doing a show right now. You can adopt them.
>> [laughter] >> All right. Let me tell you what you think about this whole story. Really imagine all the general the pressure.
The pressure.
Well, you know it will be used against you. It must.
It must and can be used against It's very dangerous. Me, me my view is to put up a celebration over union.
That might be wrong. My my my view might be wrong, but then I feel like it is not ya communal." Let us come together, make this thing successful. It it it it it will come with a sense of pride in both parties. But then, kama bado ina kama anaweza pia inakuwa ngumu to struggle sometimes to raise funds. So, at this point pia it would be nice kama wanaweza to help with that mzigo.
Do you think it's a viable thing? Me, because I'm a firm believer in If you don't have the money for it, and I go to AG I mean, I don't understand the whole point of I mean, I don't understand You go to your wedding nicely.
It does not have to be expensive.
I'm not changing what you honestly it's very unnecessary. Please don't add me to a wedding WhatsApp group. I will not add you personally.
So, mostly I don't add.
>> [laughter] >> Wow.
Okay.
>> [laughter] >> How do you what do you think about this whole harambee thing? Has it become such an overused culture? I think of it twofold. Um first >> [laughter] >> Exactly what my my producer was saying.
27 >> [laughter] >> Stop joking. But the second part of this is uh weddings should be a communal thing.
I have no problem with it. As long as as long as as long as see that we are going to blow it on one day at the venue see the what to do with the money What you can do with that money and do you have Pay the bride and the groom. Tell them start your life with that.
Apart from your life with that.
>> Yeah, yeah.
>> By the time we starting life, everything is tough for us.
>> [laughter] [laughter] >> Some optimism.
>> I'm catching your flow, Samira.
>> Exactly.
>> [laughter] >> No, there's there's there's something that you know there's something we need to go back to. When we were younger, there's this thing called Harambee. It was not meant to look as ugly as it looks.
Because And that's why I think people would have so many babies. For example, each uncle say Each uncle is supposed to give you one cow. That's why most parents would have eight kids or 10 kids. You will have about two daughters and maybe six sons.
So like from my culture, when you're going to marry, you have to give seven cows. One day you know you will make your own money maybe. I love you killer uncle. You are supposed to give you one cow.
Money for your uncles wanted to go to school so they understand. And it's the same uncles who are going to say "When you finish school, you will get a CV."
It's the same but I'm just like don't make a commitment if you're not able to be there for this person. For example, this Now you're coming back to them with cups.
So this thing of Harambee started with community.
Someone has a spoon on their head.
You have to give me 10,000 otherwise you're not You can't get out of the house.
Yeah.
>> Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, do you think it's a culture that should die? And parents should be told Listen, dowry is expensive.
>> [laughter] >> Then he got there and then they told him Before you open >> Yeah.
>> Before we open the gate, you must tip us. The aunties are like, "You must give us something."
>> Yeah.
>> And then so You know that guy who was stuck in that place?
In that place, I told him, "Listen, I don't have anything."
>> Oh, no.
>> Now, let me just rest in my car.
I can get I mean, I mean I mean Yeah, and I race.
It's raced his vehicle. And like, it was really bad cuz this guy just decided to run away.
I can't make a million or 1 million >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> You know?
>> Love is not supposed to be this expensive.
Yeah, that love is transactional. And by the way, this is why a a of people nowadays are against that institution because about a lot of people have misconstrued what the dowry was all about. It was an appreciation That's all.
>> [laughter] [clears throat] [laughter] >> Samidoh is index one. I just like making fun of Samidoh.
I think every time Samidoh makes fun of me I feel [laughter] so bad.
>> [laughter] >> The only one if you see a lot of our conversations online nowadays people are like, "Oh, you pay the bride price. Basically, I am buying you. You're my property." So, of what you made them go through. So, they're like It should not be like that. We're going to take a short commercial break. When we come back >> [laughter] >> Come on.
And we're going to be touching on as well. So, don't touch that dial. Keep on using the hashtag TTTT. And of course, you're going to be giving your feedback on the other half of the break.
Right now, quick on to the feedback #TTTT. What can you see on our feed that is MTV Kenya?
>> [laughter] >> Blinded in my left eye.
Jump on to the story. All right. Let's jump on to the story. But, there's feedback. I've seen a bunch of people talking about how Pesoutas is exactly their response on your story.
We term this as I don't know what it means. Just as Mwanzi has said, "They say so that now I believe and of course the Japanese from Toyota company I'm wondering which weed are we smoking in Europe Kisumu and Nyanza as a whole. So Gabriel Godliza Godzilla eh Godliza tell them Godzilla you know it's a real man and you know what I'm saying let's jump on to the next one. Now the ruling is big especially for women in cohabiting relationships who invest years contribute emotionally and physically and then get left with nothing because there's no marriage certificate. Now the court seems to be recognizing that commitment isn't always on paper it's in the effort, sacrifice and everyday contribution. This could help protect people from being taken advantage of and encourage more responsibility in relationships and speaking of everyday effort love often shows up in the little moments sharing meals, supporting each other, you know, winding down together over something indulgent like Dala yogurt. You know what I'm saying those small shared moments matter. Do you think the ruling will make people take relationships more seriously? Um tell me what you think real quick. What do you think gentlemen lady?
Cohabiting now that it's being taken seriously what do you think Harry?
>> Yeah.
Um I think now there will be just flings.
They will not cohabit or co-stay because cohabiting is avoiding marriage.
>> What do you mean?
>> Yeah it is.
>> Mhm.
>> Yeah because it's cohabiting it's not an official thing.
>> Is it avoiding marriage or avoiding the whole ceremony the ceremony?
>> Because there are things attached to there are things attached to the whole institution. Okay?
Uh for instance um if people get a divorce there's a split in in revenue in money in assets in whatever it was but in cohabiting it's not legalized so uh you will go back to your bags and whatever you had and I will go back to whatever I had.
>> Yeah.
>> So >> For those who want >> They will not cohabit eh?
They will start applying the bus and because of that most people tended to go here because of they would think okay this is what I can manage for now. I cannot be able to bring to to to change the dowry. I love you, you love me, we want to do this.
Let's see how it goes but then the implication of formalizing this is just like doing the the the the wedding thing all over again. So I think for those who are hit and goes but I don't know why they are saying that. Samir, what do you have to say about this? What about about the come we stayed? Come we stays.
>> Mhm.
>> They didn't come here for the actual marriages because >> [laughter] >> There are such cases.
>> Yeah.
>> Mhm.
>> Yeah.
>> [clears throat] >> That's the only thing because there are inclusion of vows. Both families equal up on everything.
>> Yeah.
>> Short and sweet, short and sweet.
>> Exactly.
>> Mhm.
>> And with that we come to the end of the best show in Africa. Guess what? Friday night rave will be here at 10:00. And of course it goes all the way till midnight. And we're going to be having two amazing artists. You remember Wendy Kimani? She's going to be making a comeback right here on the best show.
And of course we also going to have Pia Pounds all the way from Uganda. Keep on using the hashtag TTTT. The best show in Africa still continues because this is such a vibe. Catch the news.
