In vocal music analysis, modulation (key changes) serves as a powerful tool for emotional expression, as demonstrated in Minami's 'Lilac' where the shift from A minor to C minor creates a dramatic emotional lift that mirrors the song's themes of personal growth and transformation.

Pro Vocal Coach Reacts to Minami - 'Lilac'
Added:Oh god, this song.
>> So, all right. I already did this three song study which includes Lilac. It includes Eternal Blue and Underwater Reflection. I did it for my community supporting the channel. This is an app I built for the community and we can see we have some uh people that are hardcore fans of Minami that are requesting songs for me to do. If you want to be an ambassador for Mina and come over and keep her on my radar, you you're invited. Um I was just going to share this three song study with my community over on Patreon. Um but I decided to share one of the songs here, Lilac, with you all on YouTube. So uh you're going to get to check that out. Thanks so much for supporting the channel, everybody.
That's the only way I get to keep reacting to music and that's a way you get to keep artists on my on my radar.
I'm so grateful to be uh celebrating this incredible music of Minami. What an incredibly emotional, visceral artist she is.
I hope you enjoy. And the link is down in the description, by the way, if you want to see the uh three song reaction study as well as down in the top pin post. Okay, hope you enjoy. Cheers.
Lilac is a flower, the flower of youth, friendship, and humility, first love.
And the song is youth's whiplash. If you don't change their board. If you don't change their board. If you change, they say you've changed.
The Coraline fan circle. I don't want to become a hollow thing built from ego.
All right.
Here we go. Let's check it out. Lilac.
Does that You know, I keep talking about the flat 6. Flat 71. It starts off there.
A minor.
I love that looping sort of synthesizer flute.
Oh, great drum beat >> with the snare work.
So beautiful.
Straight >> drumming.
Destroy the guitar.
>> Oh, that flip in her voice.
Wow, what a chorus.
I >> love that flipping it.
Look at that lyrics.
What's she playing? She's playing Nintendo and NES.
>> Oh, no. That's a modern I was like a PlayStation. I don't know, like a two or three or something. I can't I don't know all the control, but that's that's funny. Um, anyway. Oh, that did you see?
It would be great if life could be as simple as a video game. That uh this line, life is just the the indefinite real world we live in.
Jesus.
>> This drums, the toms, that rhythmic pattern is so driving.
There's so much forward movement in it.
God, what beautiful This concept, a hero's life is m much more boring than a normal person.
>> What the things she thinks about and writes about are so fascinating. And the way she says it rather inseure.
Oh, the passion in her voice.
Oh, that change right there.
>> I don't want to become a void crafted by our ego and prejudice.
That's that line from the notes.
She my wow.
Oh my god, that moment.
Such a bandage vocally.
Birds breaking free the cage.
I love the chorus.
>> I'm similar to this indefinite real world.
I have goosebumps. God.
comparing the video game right there again.
>> Then a life where you can change the course of your future using AB keys, AB buttons.
>> What is this?
>> She is brilliant.
This guitar is awesome, too.
Love that beat. Thundering on those toms.
Phenomenal.
Wait, there was a little couple little tail. You'll hear the tail of the decay of that last note.
Whoa.
That melody. I have to hear that again.
It's like somewhere around here.
Oh, we changed keys in there. Wait, did we change that much? Hold on a second.
Yeah. So, that's the same melody concept there earlier on.
Let me uh show you here what's going on.
D F D G D Right. And then later on she's up at that's a major trans transposition. We went up a minor third. We went up from a minor to C minor. Very odd modulation in a song like this. But it's it's like it was moving around so much I didn't even really notice it.
>> I love that rhythmic the drums.
It's such a cool rhythmic pattern. Such great movement. So angsty, so passionate.
And her concept, it's really so much of like it just feels like this song. It's like this idea life does this to you.
You don't need to. Life life is so much more than that. Wouldn't it be nice if it's like a video game kind of where you have the freedom? Really video games are very restrictive. It's very interesting that it's a very paradoxical comparison.
>> I love that that quick little yodel flip in and out.
Really contrasty the brass and the wind in her tone.
Ah, >> and then she's so brassy, so raw with her tone. Oh my god. And then over here we have the same idea.
>> That key change.
>> Same thing, but just higher.
I know where I am.
>> I love it.
>> What a great song.
>> Then a life.
>> Yeah. Then a life where you could change. Brilliant. brilliant song. Oh, you know, really kind of has like a a bit of like I mean there's a hopefulness underneath the core of this music. You know, this isn't this is more inspiring and more challenging of the norm than it is like, you know, knock you down emotionally or not even that her music knock you down, it's just the it's it can be heavy, right? Some of the stuff we looked at before. Oh my god.
Yeah. So this idea of change uh if you don't change their board if you change they stay the same. You know I don't want to become a hollow thing built from ego. You want the depth. You want depth in your life experience right? We all do. We all need it.
She puts a she shines a light on all that stuff. It's so cool. All right.
Eternal blue is our next venture here.
All right. Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoyed. The link is down in the description for the full three song study as well as the top pin post. I hope to see you over in the community and I'll also share down in the link as well uh how to get to my discord thread so that you can um uh you know join the conversation. We have a lot of awesome high vibrating supportive uh people who are into like really amazing music lovers in the community. So come on over. Cheers.
