Welcome to the channel HS English. This channel will work as a complete guide for the higher secondary students of Assam State School Education Board as well as of CBSE Board.
I hope it will be beneficial for the students to score high in the board exam. So, today the topic is a poem My Mother at 66 by renowned poet Kamala Das, which is in the core course for higher secondary second year of Assam State School Education Board and or class 12 of CBSE Board.
Kamala Das is a famous name in Malayalam literature as well as Indo-Anglian literature.
My Mother at 66 is a part of Indo-Anglian literature. That means Indian writing in English where heart, plot, theme, and culture are Indian and the language used in that literature is English.
The fear of loss and mortality is the theme of the poem.
Here, the narrator wants to focus the emotional complexity of a daughter witnessing the aging of her mother.
As the narrator is aware of the fact that aging is a natural process and decay and death come with aging.
No one can prevent it.
The poet also wants to express that life is a combination of fear and hope.
And she starts the poem with a fear that is called her childhood fear that she has been carrying since childhood.
That one day her mother will become old and die.
And now she realizes the fact that her mother becomes 66 year old.
The poet does not use full stop anywhere in the poem, even in the end, to mean that single thought.
According to the narrator one Friday morning she was driving her car to the Kochi Airport.
And her mother was there with her.
After some time the narrator has noticed her mother that her mother was dozing or sleeping with her open mouth.
The narrator knows that it is the sign of extreme tiredness due to her old age.
Her mother seemed to be a corpse or dead body without any activity.
The insecurity of losing her mother has given painful thought in the mind of the poet.
The narrator made a deliberate effort to drive out the painful thought from her mind.
So she looked outside the moving car.
And she noticed young trees seem to be sprinting or running.
The young trees seem to be sprinting because the car was uh speeding past in the opposite direction. The poet used the word young as the word young represents life, whereas her mother is inactive.
The poet gets some hope to see the young trees seem to be sprinting. Again, she looked at the merry children spilling out or coming out of their homes.
Children are free from all complexities and they remain happy all that time.
They are also symbol of energy and hope.
The poet gained some hope by seeing young trees and the merry children.
Arrived at the airport, the poet again noticed her mother.
Her mother really seemed to be very wan and pale.
The mother has been compared to the late winter's moon here as the poet has used an apt or appropriate simile here.
A simile is such a figure of speech in which two dissimilar figures are compared to find out at least one similar point.
The late winter's moon looks hazy, not clear, without any sign.
Her mother is also lacking all her strength and she is also without any sign just like late winter's moon.
The narrator is also aware of the fact that people are helpless in some conditions.
And they cannot do anything except accepting it.
So, the poet kept her smile constantly to cover up her hidden pain.
The repetition of the word smile is a reflection of her cheer, actually.
Here, the poet has used parting words.
Parting words, "See you soon, Amma."
That they reflect or assure hope to meet her mother again.
In our next video, we will discuss the difficult words and question answers of My Mother at 66. Keep watching this channel, HS English.
