The Dylan Thomas Trail | Birthplace, Writing Shed & Final Resting PlaceAdded:
Join me as I follow in the footsteps of one of Wales' greatest storytellers.
Behind me is probably one of the most important homes in all of Wales, the birthplace of Dylan Thomas. So, let's take a step inside. He's a poet whose words have traveled far beyond our Welsh shores, from smoky Swansea streets to New York stages, whose stories, poems, and passion for Wales have continued to inspire generations to this day. But, it all started right here. Even Hollywood stars have dropped by, drawn by the magic and legacy of Dylan Thomas.
>> Under Milk Wood was the one that really grabbed me, and I And it was [music] maybe a combination of um the brilliance of Dylan Thomas's his capabilities with language and words. To anybody who has like uh a dilemma [music] of falling asleep, Dylan lets out put on Richard Burton reading Under Milk Wood and fall asleep [music] to that.
>> Today, the house has been painstakingly restored to how it would have looked during Dylan's lifetime, and its importance still attracts people from right across the world.
Even Taylor Swift name-checks Dylan Thomas on her 2024 album, The [music] Tortured Poets Department.
But, behind one of our most celebrated sons was a man deeply connected to one [music] city, Swansea. A city where traces of Dylan Thomas can still be found around almost every corner.
While Swansea helped shape Dylan Thomas, it's right here in Laugharne that he found peace. And he found that sanctuary in his final family home, a cliffside [music] cottage. Today, the boathouse remains one of Wales' most iconic landmarks. Frozen in time, it's as if Dylan Thomas simply walked out and never came back. It's here that Thomas wrote Do not go gentle into that good night.
Do you know you can see how Dylan Thomas fell in love with the boathouse with these incredible views over the Laugharne estuary that just let your imagination run wild.
Then of course there's probably the most famous shed in all of Wales, the Dylan Thomas writing shed built way back in the 1920s for Llan's first ever motor car. When Dylan moved into the boat house just on the road, this place became [music] his creative space. He also loved Llan Castle famously describing it as as brown as owls. So Dylan is buried in the place he loved in Llan right here at St. Martin's Church next to his wife Caitlin. But what might surprise you is there's no grand monument. There's no towering memorial.
Finally, this is Dylan's auntie's house.
Now this eerie abandoned house might not be much to look at right now, but in fact this is Fern Hill, the farm that once inspired one of the most famous poems by Dylan Thomas. [music] It's a farm where he spent much of his school holidays and once dubbed a [music] ramshackle house of hollow fear.
