Nouns are naming words that name people, animals, things, places, and ideas. There are two main types: proper nouns (specific names that start with capital letters, like 'London' or 'Rita') and common nouns (general names that don't start with capital letters, like 'city' or 'teacher'). Nouns can also be classified as countable (can be counted, like 'cat') or uncountable (cannot be counted, like 'water'). In sentences, nouns often serve as the subject, which is the word or words that the sentence is about.

>> Good evening. Good evening everyone.
Welcome to today's English class. I know it's a bit late but I hope you all are excited for the class, right?
We are going to talk about a topic which is important for your summer Olympiad exams.
Before I start, tell me how are all of you doing? All are good. Good evening. I can see everyone typing good evening. Very very good evening to everyone.
How are you all? You all are doing good.
Everyone is doing fine.
Great.
Very nice. Very good. So, uh we are going we are like taking the preparation for your Olympia exams. Right.
Before I start continue um any of the topics, let us first discuss about the syllabus. what is going to be there or what are the types of questions that you can expect in your exams. Okay. And what are the topics? There will be many topics, isn't it? There is not only one topic for your exam. There are many topics. So, let us first see what are the topics that you will have to cover before your exams.
Okay.
So you can see these are the topics that you can like from where you will be getting the questions. Okay. I think there are 15 topics. Uh it show it looks like 15 but we are going to discuss all of them slowly slowly in every class. So there is nothing to worry. Don't get scared that oh my god there are 15 topics. No, nothing to worry. These are very easy topics. Okay. So, there is uh there is supposed to be picture quiz.
There will be world of words, synonyms, antonyms, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs.
Then there are articles, prepositions, conjunctions, simple present tense, simple past tense.
There will be contractions and jumble words. There will be comprehension and then there will be spoken and written expression along with punctuation.
Okay, I know it looks a bit scary. Oh, there are so many topics but trust me there is nothing to get scared about.
Okay, we will be doing it very nicely.
We will not face any problem. Okay. But you also need to understand that this is an Olympia exam, right? Um this is not the school exams. It's not your uh unit exams or the yearly exams that you give in school, right? So there will be some changes in your question paper, but we are going to crack it very nicely. Okay?
We will be brave. We will be strong and we will always ask questions. Whenever you don't understand anything, you type on the chat box. I have kept the chat box in front of me open so that you can keep your questions over there and I will explain again and again until your concept is clear. Okay, great. So let's start. One more thing that you need to take care about. This is the syllabus. Now, where do you write the answers? Do you write the answers in answer sheet in Olympia exams? No, we do not write answers in olympiad like answer sheets in Olympiad exam, right?
What will we be provided with?
We will be provided with something called the OMR sheet. Can you see the sheet on the screen? This is known as the OMR sheets. Okay. So, this OMR sheet will be provided to you and you will have to darken the circles. That is your correct option. So you have no need to write anything. See this part is easy right?
In your school exams what happens? You need to write your answers. But here you have no need to write anything. You just need to color the circles with your pencil. Right? This is easy. You need to write your name. You will have to write your school. The name of your school.
You will have to write in which class you are and then you will have to write your aren kids role number. So where will you get your role number? Admit card will be given beforehand. Before the exam starts you will get your admit cards. In your admit card your role number will be mentioned and same role number you will write over here.
Questions will you have to attempt? See, you will have to attempt five questions. Okay. Then what about this? What about from 36 to 50? What about these questions? These questions are not for you. You are grade two children, right? You're grade two students. So these questions are not for you. This part you can see this says that this column is for class five and six. Right? So question from question number 36 to question number 50 these questions are not for you. You will have to only attempt 35 questions.
I'm sure you already know that it is the total marks of your Olympic exam will be 40.
Total marks is 40. Right? Now what is the marks division? So there will be some general questions.
There will be some general questions.
How many? Sum means how many general questions will be 30. And these 30 questions will be of one mark. Okay.
These 30 questions will be of one mark.
So 30 marks done.
Rest five questions will come under the achiever section.
Rest five questions will come under the achiever sections. Okay, there will be five questions. These will be two marks question and this is 10. Okay, achiever section you can expect the odds questions. Okay. What is the meaning of hots? It is that hot and cold while hots. No. So hot questions are higher order thinking skill questions. Okay.
Where you will have to think and you will have to find out the answer. The answer will the question will be A BIT TRICKY. OKAY. LITTLE BIT TRICKY. So hot questions there will be five hots questions which are true marks and this this section will be of 10 marks total 30 + 10 will be 40 marks. Okay we are sorted you know that you are going to get OMR sheets and there will be 40 marks exam 1 hour. What about the time limit?
Do I get the whole day? Do I get all 24 hours of the day? No, we do not get all 24 hours. We only get 1 hour which is 60 minutes. You only get 60 minutes to complete the whole uh exam. Okay, that's it. Now see to uh give this exam you will have to be a bit like you know read the questions properly. So your reading skill has to be very good. And the thinking skill, your understanding skill has to be superb. And how will we get that? By practicing. Every day we will practice the questions that we are practicing in the class. Okay. Done.
Now let's start with the topic. So what is the topic today? The topic today is nouns. Right? We are going to talk about nouns today. Quickly tell me in the chat box what are nouns?
What are nouns? Tell me if you have any idea. What are nouns? Who who knows?
Yes, good evening. I can see everyone is still saying good evening. Thank you so much. Nouns are what? Nouns are naming words, right?
Whatever you see around yourself, everything has a noun, right? Uh, you know what is this? I'll draw. I'll try to draw, but I'm not very good. Don't laugh at this thing. We all know this is what this is a class, right?
If I draw this also have a name. What is this?
This is a What is this?
This is a mouse. Right? This is a mouse.
So everything what you see around you has a name. You cannot tell me possibly you won't be able to tell me anything that ma'am this thing is there but it doesn't have a name. Even you yourself have names right? Uh you have more than one name. One is your pet name and another is your formal name. So all the things around us are having names and those naming words are known as nouns.
Right? Okay. So you can see that the job of noun is to name people, animal, things and places. People, animal things and places. These are all nouns.
Okay. A noun is a naming word. It can name a place, animal, thing, idea, of course, people.
People should have names right? If you will what will happen if there are no names of the things if I do not have a name then what will happen? What is the problem if I don't have a name? If some if any particular thing or a particular animal or a particular person doesn't have a name then how will you call it?
If you don't know what is this then how will you how will you tell that give me that thing suppose this is a pencil right but this doesn't have a name if there was no word as pencil then what you would have done you couldn't have called anyone you couldn't have called your teachers you couldn't call your friends I I o all these sounds we should have used right to call people or things so names are very important If you do not have a name then the complete thing is going to be very messy. Right? So nouns are very important. See there are some words on your screen. Teacher, boy, shop, London.
These are all names of maybe person, maybe animals, maybe things or maybe places. Right? Okay. You can read the words. Try to read the words on your own. What is this first word? This is teacher, right? You will have to try to read the words on your own. What is this boy?
What is this shop? What is this? London.
What is this book? What is this? Nomi.
Nomi is the name of a girl. Okay, this girl see it's a little girl like all of you. So her name is Naomi and this is cat. This is computer. Okay. So these are all names of things or places, animals, everything is jumbled. These are all naming words, right? Okay.
Next. So nouns can be used to name people that we have discussed already that nouns can be used to name people.
Now see there are five people on your screen and everyone has names right here. This boy is known as Adam. This girl is known as Naomi. Over here this lady she is this lady she's known as the teacher. This boy or this man is known as the doctor and this is a coin. Now you can see a difference. Can you can you identify a difference here? All these words these words have not started with capital letter and these are not particular names.
Doctor can be any doctor. Right? Teacher can be any teacher. A person who teaches you English is also a teacher. A person who teaches you science is also a teacher. A person who teaches you math is also a teacher. So it's a very general name, isn't it? But this side his small children they are having very specific name. That boy is known as Adam. His particular name is Adam. And this girl over here she is known as Nami. Naomi from the previous slide, right? So she is known as Naomi. So these are particular names. When you are talking about nouns, you can see that some nouns are very general names. You can get many um many things of that name. But there are some names that are very specific. So the specific names, the particular names they start with capital letter. They start with capital letter. But the general names like this doctor, this teacher, this boy, these names are very general names. There can be many doctors, there can be many teachers, there can be many boys, there can be many girls. Right?
Okay. So, specific name and general names. We will remember these two terms.
We will discuss about these two terms more later. Okay. Now, as nouns can be names of people, nouns can be names of places also. You can see here is this place. This is known as the kitchen where this dishwasher is kept. Then this place is known as London.
Then this is the school. This is Japan.
Japan shown on the map. This is the shop. And then this is the beach. Here also you can see that London and Japan these have started with capital letter.
Right? But kitchen, school, shop, beach, they have started with small letter. Why? Because they are again the very general names. And London and Japan these are the specific names.
Superman. Yes, Superman is a name of a character, right? I will come to Superman. Just give me SOME TIME. NOW, HERE YOU CAN see the names of things.
It's a computer. This is a book. This is a balloon. HOW MANY OF YOU LIKE BALLOONS? You like balloons, right? So, this is a balloon. This is a pencil.
It's a pumpkin. When can you see this kind of pumpkin? A face. Face made out of the pumpkin. During Halloween, right?
When we celebrate Diwali in America, they celebrate her Halloween. Right? So that time you make this kind of pumpkin.
You make a face out of the pumpkin.
Okay? And then this is a cat. It now means an. So these are also again names of things. Cat is not a name of a thing.
Cat is a name of an animal. But the other pictures, the computer, the book, the pencil, the balloon, the pumpkin, these are all names of things, right?
Okay.
Now look at the words below. Can you find nouns from these words? Before I go to any other discussion, see here there are many words that are given on your screen. There are many words that are given on your screen. All of them are not naming words. All of them are not naming words. Find out the naming words.
And write in the chat box. Someone is telling that I love balloons. Yes, I also love balloons. Everyone love balloons. They're so colorful, right?
Okay. Um yes please find out the nouns and write in your chat box so that I can understand that you are able to identify the nouns or not. Okay, SEE THE FIRST ONE IS CANDLE, second one is dog, then there is car, then there is tall, pretty, Joshua, tree, when jacket, dancing, owl, shiny, bird, shirt, plain and because. Now you will have to identify which ones are the nouns. Oh, very good.
Very good.
Yes. Now I can get see your answers on YouTube. So this is candle. Candle is a noun. It's a name of a thing. This is tall. It's a name of an animal. Car.
Okay. Is tall a noun? No. Tall is not a It is not name of anything, any person, any place. It is not. It is not a naming word. Right. Okay. Pretty. Is pretty a naming word? No. No. No. No. No. No.
It's a big No. Pretty is not a naming word at all. Joshua is a naming word.
Yes. Joshua is a naming word. Tree is a naming word. Ben is a naming word. No ma'am. Ben is not a naming word. Jacket is a naming word. Yes. Jacket is a naming word. Dancing again is not a naming word. It's an action word. Right.
You dance at your home. Action word. Owl is a naming word. Yes, it's a name of a bird. Shiny is not a naming word. Bird is a naming word. Shirt is a naming word. Plane is a naming word. Because is not a naming word. Right? So we have been able to identify the naming words.
Isn't it? Very good. Good job.
Okay. Here you can find a sentence. Here you can find a sentence. See now me sat on the grass. The sentence says now me sat on the grass. You will have to find out the naming words from the sentence.
Now me sat on the grass. Can you tell me now sat on the grass? Which ones are the naming words in the sentence? Ni. Very good. So, Ni is a naming word. What else? Which one else is the naming word?
Grass is a naming word. Very good. Good job. High five. Give me a high five.
Very good. Good job. Now comes the question that why there are some words there are some naming words that are written in capital letter and why there are some naming words that are not written in capital letter. Right? Okay.
So these are your answers.
Okay. Let me discuss first why some words are written in capital letter. So as I said there is something called specific names right there is something called specific names like um someone's name can be Arun here I think I got someone's name as Priyangu maybe or let's write a name of a girl Priyangi um name of a city vaneshwar so see these are name of a country, name of a country, India.
So these are very specific names, names of particular people, particular city, particular country. Okay? When you are talking about specific particular names, they are known as proper nouns. They are known as proper nouns. Why? because these are specific particular names.
Okay. Then what about what about um city? What about the word boy?
What about the word girl? Priyaki is a name for girl, right? What about it's a name of a city. What about India? It's a name of a country.
What about these naming words? These are also naming words is unnamed. These are also naming words. But these are not specific names. These are general names.
These are names of general things or these are common names. When I say a boy, you can't understand which boy I'm talking about. There are so many boys in the class. But if I say Arun then you can understand that ma'am is talking about one particular boy Arun right? If I say city all the cities in India are beautiful. I am not talking about any particular city but if I say Bhaneshwar Bhuvaneshwar is a beautiful city then you can understand that ma'am is talking about one particular city its name is Bhuvaneshwar. Right? So for general names we do not use any capital letter. These are known as the common nouns. These are known as the common nouns. Done.
So there are two types of nouns that WE HAVE ALREADY DISCUSSED. PROPER NOUNS and common nouns. There are many more types of nouns that we will discuss when we will be discussing the questions. Okay.
As of now, proper nouns, common nouns.
Okay. Ma'am, what are the other types of noun? Let me tell you what are the other types of nouns. Okay. Let me tell you what are the other types of nouns. I have some space over here. We will come to the sentences. Just let me tell you what are the other types OF NOUNS. SO THERE ARE FIVE types of nouns. Okay, there are five types of nouns. Like you have five fingers in your hand. How many fingers do you have? In one hand you have five fingers, right? Okay. So there are five types of nouns.
Common common noun we have discussed just now.
Proper nouns we have discussed just now.
What next? There is something called abstract nouns.
There is something called abstract nouns. Then there is something called um material noun.
There is something called collective noun.
Right? So these are the five fingers in your hand. Okay? These are the five types of nouns. Now apart from these we also have the division of nouns based on are those nouns like can we count those nouns or we can't count those nouns okay if you can count like you cannot count everything right can you count the hair on your head you have so many hair you can't count them can you count the stars in the sky oh no no no you can't count the stars in the sky. So there is based on you can count them or you can't count them. There are two divisions of nouns.
One is known as countable nouns.
One is known as countable nouns and the other one is known as uncountable nouns. Okay. Now ma'am what is abstract noun? What is material noun? We will discuss them when we will be discussing the questions. Okay. As of now, let's solve this. Read carefully and underline or circle all the nouns in each sentence. There are five sentences on your screen. We will do two sentences.
Okay? One and two. We will do. Come on.
Tell me what are the nouns in the first sentence. You need to type what are the nouns in the first sentence. The cat chases the butterfly in the garden. What are the naming words that you can find in the first sentence? Write down in the chat box quickly. Quickly write down in the chat box.
What are the nouns that you can see in the first sentence? Cat, butterfly, garden. Very good. Very good. So, let me circle. Right. Circle or underline?
Circle. Let's circle. Okay. So, cat is um cat is a noun.
Butterfly is a noun. Garden is a noun.
Very good. Cat is a name of an animal.
Butterfly is a name of an insect. And garden is a name of a place. Good job.
Okay, let's do number two also. Let's do number two. A big elephant SPLASHES WATER in the pond. A big elephant splashes water in the pond. Okay. Yes.
Tell me what are the nouns in sentence number two. Elephant water and pond. Good job. Sora synapati.
Very good. Um so elephant water and pond. Elephant is the name of an animal. Water and pond these are names of things. Pond can be also identified as a place pond. Okay. Fine.
Very good. So now let's discuss some Olympiad type questions. Okay. These types of questions also you will get an Olympiad. But Olympiad questions can be a bit tricky also. Okay. But you people are smart so you are going to do them very easily. Isn't it? Let's start with sentence uh number one. Question number one. Which of the nouns in bold names an animal, a place or a thing? So there are sentences. You will have to find out in which sentence the words that are in bold. It names either an animal or a place or a thing. It can't be all of them together, but it can be an animal, it can be a place, it can be a thing.
Very good. There is someone named as Sangeita Das. The count is named as Sangeita Das. Very good. Kangaroo. Very good. So your correct answer is option number D. Kangaroo. Now see you will be having the OMR sheet right? You will be having the OMR sheet. In the OMR sheet there will be circles. Let me draw the circles over here.
This is question number one. This is option A, B, C, and D. Now, which one is your correct option? Your correct option is option number D. You can't just put a tick on the question paper. If you put a tick on the question paper and you don't do anything on the OMR sheet, it will it is not going to happen. So, you need to circle the correct option in your OMR sheet. And when you will be circling, when you will be circling, you will have to circle this very nicely.
You will have to circle this very nicely. Not a little bit of uh white space should be there. You can't you can't circle it like this and leave it. You can't just circle it like this and leave it. You will have to circle it very nicely. Should be dark. Okay. So, option number D that is your correct option. Let's talk about the other option. This is an Olympia exam, right?
Um, you should also know why the other options are wrong. Okay, that will be helping you. Okay, why? Why option number A is wrong? Because the word loudly that is in bold that is not a naming word. Right? Option number B it 8 is in bold. It is not a naming word. If Raj would have been in bold then it would have been it could have been correct because Raj is a name of a place but Raj is not in bold.
If you will be in a hurry, you will not see you might miss the fact that the question is you will have to find out the nouns that is in the bolded form. If you will not focus, you will see oh Raj is there. Okay, this is the correct option. You will circle option number B nicely and then you will come from the exam hall very happily. But that option will be wrong because the question says you will have to find a noun that is in bold. So though Raj is a noun, it's a proper noun but it is wrong option. It is your wrong option because that word is not in bold form. Okay. Coming to option number C. It's the same case though Delhi is there but Delhi is not in bold form. So that's why this is also not your correct option. Tomorrow is in bold form and tomorrow is not a naming word. Kangaroo that is in bold form and it is also um a name of an animal. So your option D is your correct option.
Okay. So we will have to understand that why the other options are wrong. Okay.
Okay. If at now here I would say that if there is any uh problem if there is any doubt kindly put in the chat box okay I will explain your doubts okay I'll clarify them okay coming to question number two which word in bold is a noun which word in bold is a noun the sentence is read the sentence try to read the sentence on your own Don't ask mama or papa to read for you because nobody is going to read it for you in the exam hall. So you will have to try to read the sentence on your own.
Newborn break the sentence. When you break the word when you see a big word try to break the word. N B O R in born. Newborn newborn baby kangaroos are smaller than your thumb.
So this is your thumb right now. Newborn baby kangaroos are smaller than your thumb. The words that are in bold form are are smaller, your and thumb. Now you will have to find out which ONE IS THE CORRECT OPTION.
Let me draw the circles over here. A, B, C and D. Which one is the correct? Very good. So, option number D is correct.
You will have to color this D in black colored pitch black. I am not using black though. I'm using red. But you will have to use pencil and you will have color it nicely. You will have to fill up the whole circle. Okay. Ch.
Let's go to the next question.
Which noun is in the subject of the given sentence? Now here comes a question that what is a subject and what what does subject of a sentence mean? Okay, this first we will have to first we will have to understand that what is a subject of a sentence? What is a sentence? That is the first question. What is a sentence?
If I say it's grass cow. Is this a sentence? First tell me is this a sentence? It's grass cow.
It's grass cow. Is this a sentence?
This is not a sentence. Right. It's grass cow is not a sentence. If I write If I write cow eats grass.
Cow eats grass.
Then this is a sentence. So what is the difference? What is the difference of this uh the sentence that I have written on the top? What is the of this and this? The sentence that I have written in red color eats grass cow. It is not a sentence. It is just a group of words any meaning. There is no meaning of this sentence. Right?
Why this this group of words? This is also a group of words. Cow is grass. But this is a sentence. Why? because this has a meaning. A sentence is a group of words that has a meaning. Okay. Now, um any sentence can be divided into any sentence can be divided into two parts.
Okay. One is subject and the other one is predicate.
There are there are two uh divisions in a sentence. A sentence can be divided into two parts. So a sentence has two parts.
Okay. Subject and predicate. Our concern is which one is the subject of a sentence. Subject of a sentence is the word. It can be a noun. It can be a pronoun. The word it can be name of a person. It can be name of a thing. It can be name of a place. It can be any word that is the topic of the sentence.
Okay? It can be a noun. It can be a pronoun. The noun or the pronoun that is the topic of the sec of the sentence.
Like cow is grass. Who is grass? Cow is grass. Right? So the cow is the subject.
This cow over here this is the subject.
Because when I'm asking that who eats grass, I get the answer the cow with grass. Right? This eating grass, this is about whom? This is about the cow. But and what about this rest of the portion?
The rest of the portion apart from the subject is known as the predicate. The rest of the portion apart from the subject is name is known as the predicate. Okay. So subject is whom?
Subject is the noun or the pronoun that is performing the action in the sentence. Who is eating? The cow is eating. Action is what? Eating. Right?
So who is eating? The cow is eating.
Okay? So the cow is the subject. If I say that um I am teaching. If I say I am teaching.
So who is teaching? I am teaching. Who is the subject? I am the subject. Okay.
Now come back to this sentence. My favorite aunt wears hats with loggers and feathers. Right? Now there are more than one nouns in this one sentence.
Aunt is one noun. Hats is one noun.
Flowers is also one noun. Feathers is also a noun. But your question is that you will have to find out the noun that is in the subject of the sentence. So among these four nouns which noun is the subject of the sentence that you will have TO IDENTIFY. NOW THE VERB IS WHAT?
The verb is where. What is happening?
What is the action in the sentence? The action in the sentence is wearing.
Right? This is the action.
Now you can question that who is wearing who is wearing the hats with flowers and feathers such a beautiful hat. Who is wearing the hat? The aunt is wearing the hat. My favorite aunt. So now which one?
Which noun is the subject? Hats is the subject. No. Flowers is the subject. No.
Feathers is the subject. No. No. No. No.
Who is the subject? and is the subject.
So your correct answer is 3 a. Right?
Now the question comes why hats, flowers and feathers these are wrong. These are wrong because these are part of the predicate portion. These are all part of the predicate portion of the sentence.
See though we were discussing about nouns your subject and predicate of the sentence is also done. Right? Very good.
This is how you need to crack your Olympia questions. Okay, coming to the next one. Very easy. We arrived early at the station. We arrived early at the station. We arrived early station. You need to find out which one is the common noun. You need to find out which one is the common noun first. Question number four. Let's do this quickly. Question number four. Station. Station is not option number A. Someone has given the answer but you have written option number a station. See this will also happen during your exam. You will get four circles.
You can see that the option is correct option number is D. But if you are not being careful then what will you do? In the question paper you will see that option number D is correct. But in the answer sheet, you will nicely color option number A and you will come out of the exam hall very happily. But this is something that you can't do. If your option number D is correct and if you are coloring option number A, circle number A, then will it be correct? No, this will be wrong. Be careful. Add circle correct the correct number like correct circle number. Okay, the number is D. So correct the circle that is in number D. Don't circle the don't color the other circles. Okay. Okay. Coming to number five. So option number D station is your correct common noun. If I would have said Bhuberneshwar station, if I would have said Katak station then it would have been a proper noun. But here we do not know which station we are talking about. So station is your common noun. Come to number five. Mr. Sha is our favorite teacher. Mr. Sha is our favorite teacher. There are two nouns.
One is Mr. Sha and one is teacher. YOUR QUESTION IS TO IDENTIFY the common noun.
So find out the common noun. Five.
Five A. So 5 A. Teacher is your correct answer. What about Mr. Sha? Mr. Sha is not a a common noun. Then what is it?
Mr. Sha is a proper noun. Mr. Sha is a proper noun. Okay. Come to question number C. Uh six. Next question. Let me have a look at your puppy. Let me have a look at your puppy. Question number six.
Question number six. Let me have a look at your puppy. Puppy is your correct answer. Puppy is name of an animal. It can be any puppy. If I would have named um the puppy a name, I could have named it Bruno, then Bruno would have been proper noun.
Would have been proper noun because it's a particular name. But puppy is a common noun. It's your like it's your correct answer. It's a common noun, right? Okay.
Very good. So, we can go to the next slide.
Um if if there is any doubt please type it. Um I can't u I think I'm not able to see any doubts. If there are any doubts please type it. Okay. Okay Mark or you can ask your parents also to help you to type it. I can understand you. If you are not able to type it on your own you can ask your parents to type your doubts. Okay. Okay. Now mark the common noun to fill in the blanks. So blanks are given. You will have to identify the common nouns to fill in the blanks. As light as the dash. Now see the question is you will have to fill in the blanks as light. So you will have to come you will have to choose a word. You will have to choose the name of a word name of a thing that is very light. Okay. Now all these are names of things. Brick, car, box, feather. These are all names of things. But then which one is the light one? Which one is the light one?
Someone is saying car. See? But is car light? Is car light?
I'll try. Car over here.
Something like this. A car looks something like this. Right.
This is a car. Boom. Boom. Bloom bloom.
