A bounced landing, a last second goaround, then disaster. A pilot was coming in to land on runway 23, but the approach was already unstable. He overshot final, made a correction, still too fast, too much energy. The airplane touched down hard, then bounced again and again. Now the runway was disappearing fast. Near the end of the runway, the pilot made the decision to go around. Witnesses watched the airplane barely clear the first line of trees. Then suddenly, the nose pitched sharply upward. The left wing dropped.
The airplane rolled, nose down, and crashed.
No one survived. Here's what happened.
The pilot tried to force the airplane to climb too aggressively after a rushed goaround. Low air speed, high angle of attack. That's the perfect setup for an aerodynamic stall, especially close to the ground. The lesson: If your approach is unstable, go around early, not at the last second. And during a goaround, full power smoothly. Control the pitch.
Positive rate climb. Stay coordinated.
Don't yank the airplane into the sky. A goaround is not a failure. Waiting too long is.
