In supernatural romance literature, when male leads possess supernatural abilities that allow them to control or manipulate female leads' free will, this can create problematic narrative dynamics that undermine character agency and reader engagement, as demonstrated in Christine Feehan's Carpathian series where the male lead's use of voice enthrallment and subsequent violent actions are criticized as gratuitous and unlikable.

Dark Magic by Christine Feehan | Quick Thoughts #bookbites #booktubetbr #booktubeAñadido:
I finished two books yesterday and let me tell you about one of them. I read Dark Magic by Christine Feehan. This is the fourth book in the Carpathian series. I'm starting to think this series just isn't meant for me. When I start a Feehan book, I understand that the MMC is probably going to be possessive, protective, and mildly chauvinistic. It seems with this series, however, that is just ramped up to the extreme. I was really looking forward to Gregory's story. I liked him as a character in the previous three books.
However, when we get to him in this one, we have a major issue with him just taking away the free will of Savannah constantly. He has the ability to use his voice to enthrall people and Carpathians, and so he does that on a regular basis with Savannah. He says it's for her own good, for her safety, but I don't understand why zombifying your love interest isn't an okay thing.
It also leads to the issue with Savannah just having no sense of self-preservation and just wanting to willingly fling herself into the world thinking that everything is going to be fine even though it's not overrun by vampires on a regular basis. We also have a problem Gregory is to the point in his life where he is starting to actually lose himself and become a vampire. Carpathians are like the good guys. Vampires are what happens when a male Carpathian doesn't have his life mate and just slips into insanity. And so, while he's so close to the edge, at one point he forcibly feeds from and rapes Savannah. She forgives him mid-act. He's riddled with guilt, yada yada. It was rape on page and it didn't need to happen. It was unnecessary. It was gratuitous. I've owned two more books in the series. I'm having a lot of problems with it. I just don't think that it's great and it is Feehan's first series, so maybe that's where I'm having an issue. I've liked newer series from her. I just think that this one's not working for me because the MMC's are just so gross and unlikable at times.
