The NFL compensatory pick system rewards teams who lose more talent in free agency than they add by providing extra draft capital, but a loophole exists where free agent signings after the draft deadline no longer count toward the formula, potentially disadvantaging teams like the Detroit Lions who may lose players to teams like the New York Giants.

Lions Rumors: Lions URGED To Sign Veteran Pass Rusher, DJ Reader Compensation GoneAdded:
Good afternoon, folks. In today's Lions news video, we have a lot to cover here.
DJ Reer, he signed with the New York Giants. When Lions get screwed in compensary picks, we're going to get into that. [music] Woodward Sports has a new owner, at least the majority owner, sold it away, and I'm going to tell you why that's great [music] for Lions fans.
We got to talk about that a little bit.
And should the Lions sign Cleveland Clean Frell, Lions being urged to. So, we'll go over this player and what he potentially could bring to the Lions.
Same thing with Java Clowney as he is being urged to signed with Lions. Look, Lions need a little bit more talent on this team as we prepare for week one and training camp and all that stuff. So, could they bring another player in? And Terry Arnold speaks about how training camp is and his expectations for this year. But before we get into today's video, my name is Mike Kimmer from Lions Talk by Chat Sports and I drop Lions news and rumors every single day. If that is something that interests you, go ahead and subscribe to the channel.
Without further ado, let's get into the video right now.
First story for today is could the Lions get boned when it comes to compens.
Riseman says the NFL developed a compensary pick system as a way to balance free agency for teams who can't afford to retain their talented players.
In short, the NFL provides extra resources to teams who lose more talent in free agency than they add by giving them extra draft capital in the following year's draft. The details of this formula are extremely complicated.
Weighing the length and value of each contract signed in free agency, as well as incorporating the snap counts of players added and lost. But there is one significant loophole that needs to be closed. And the New York Giants game this system while Detroit Lions were on the loser end. Rise would continue on says on Monday after the NFL draft, free agency signings no longer count against compensary pick formula. That means that any free agent signed or lost after the deadline will not impact the team's formula to gain extra compens.
What they're trying to say is the Lions could get screwed on here and get no compens [music] for DJ Reer. Now look, if that is how the rules are gamed, I'm not going to hate New York Giants for doing that. You got to take every little route you can, right? But look, if the NFL wants to change this up, that'd be a good idea because a lot of free agents do wait after the draft, bigger names, because they just want to know what spot is available. Where can they get the most playing time? And so, some of these guys wait after the draft. So, I would love for them to change it up. But, do you actually care about the Lions missing out on some compensatory draft picks? Let me know your thoughts. Let's talk about Woodward Word Sports. said, "I got some good news for you because folks, [music] Woodward Sports is leaving Woodward Avenue." And that's that's interesting, but that's not the good art. Woodward Sports, the all digital sports talk broadcasting outfit is moving locations after Joey Nemo [music] acquired the majority stake from founder Chad Johnson of Lady James. The company's announced Monday morning the transaction has been in the works for months, and that is great news. Chad Johnson is no longer majority owner of Woodward Sports. If you don't know who he is, he is literally the douchiest of douchebags of all time.
Elitist. He thinks he knows everything.
He always believes in money. He thinks he's cool. He's literally what you consider a high school kid in a popularity contest, but old. He is a terrible owner. If you read the text that he sent to his employees, you'll understand [music] why everybody at Woodward Sports should be happy. everybody including the listeners because that guy was an absolute and utter fraud for an owner and I'm happy that we don't have to deal with him any longer. Show is sponsored by Prize Picks, what I'm always talking about because I absolutely dig it. That's for sure. And especially right now with the Pistons doing really good in the playoffs. They're here for basketball and baseball is underway and it's time to cash in with Prize Picks. Prize Picks is America's number one sports picks app and is the best place to win cash while watching sports. The app is super easy to use. Just pick more or less on a few player stats and lock in your lineup.
Literally that easy. What I got for tonight's games here and I got Tyrese Maxi. He's getting more than 24.5 points. I got Jaden McDaniels. He's going to be getting more than 19.5 points. and Victor Wabanyama getting more than 6.5 blocks plus steals. With the new social feeds features, you can share prize picks with your friends and copy the lineups with a single click.
That includes me and the rest of my guys at Chad Sports and the girls there too.
You can follow us on prize pick, tail our pics, or fade and get the pick before they even get posted on the show.
New user offer. Download the Prize Pix app today with the link in the comments and in the description and use code HMA to get $50 in your lineup after you play your first $5 lineup. That's code HMA to get $50 in your lineups if you play your first $5 lineup prize picks. It's good to be right. And I know some of these guys, they can't talk about Chad Johnson like I can because look, I'm not part of Woodward Sports. But now I'll definitely affiliate with them more. I'll talk to them more. I'm sorry, but that Chad Johnson was a horrible person. If you read the text that he sent to his employees, it was nothing but destroying their calling them names, calling them every name in the book. Uh just cussing them out, treating them like absolute and utter garbage. One of the worst owners of anything of any business I have ever seen. This guy is a horrible horrible person. And I'm really really happy that they will have now a different majority. something where the business in my opinion is now going to expand and you're going to see Woodward Sports go in a positive direction and there is nothing nothing nothing wrong with that because that is a good good thing folks go ahead and like the video.
I don't know. Let's get that 300 likes.
I'm always asking for 300 likes. It's pretty easy to do. though. Now, the Lions are being urged to sign a couple of pass rushers and one being Cleveland Ferrell, formerly of multiple teams, but lastly, I guess the San Francisco 49ers.
But who is he? Pass rusher, free agent, 28 years old last year, 13 solo, four sacks, zero force fumbles, zero interceptions.
So, he played on multiple teams. Veteran kind of floating the boat here. And when you talk about Detroit right now and just trying to get another player on the defensive line, it wouldn't cost that much to get Frell.
And look, we're just looking now at [music] this point simply for contributors, right? We're not looking for the stud. We got our starters, right? But we would love to have some rotational pieces. And if the Lions want [music] to get feral, I would not be upset about it. I want it. And another player that the Lions are absolutely being urged to talk to is Jadeavon Clowney. And this is what Veto Churo said on si.com. Says, "I would like the Lions to go out there and get veteran edge like Joey Bosa, Cam Jordan, Javon Clowney." Shuro said, "It's because as much as I like Detroit's draft pick of Derrick Moore and addition of DJ Wan, free agency, I still don't think that the team's passing run unit is consistently productive enough throughout the duration of the 2026 [music] season." continue on here. They're going to utilize Tyreek Williams plenty and he can play that spot, but he'll be best in rotation. I think that the veteran added the spot would help finalize and has been mentioned as Cincinnati's TJ Slater or a player think Detroit that Detroit could try to make in a move earlier this week. Look, if the Lions wanted to get a DaVon Clowny, they can do it. It's not going to be hard. Here's the problem.
just as the age 33 years old and a as we've seen [music] so far in this off season they're really trying to get younger they're trying to get younger all around the whole team and I think being 33 kind of excludes him from that with that said for me personally I don't care just like Veto was saying just like others I just looking for a piece that's a rotational piece we're not looking for anything more than that right we just want to get more pass rushers running towards the quarterback and that's how you win games, consistent pressure, consistent you, if you were to add say Frell or Clowney, I would be pretty happy then with this defensive line, right? [music] Aiden Hutchinson, DJ Wanom, Trevor Noki, Derek Moore, who we just picked up, he'll be up there. DJ want them. You put them on this defensive line and you're happy to go, right? You're good to go.
We just need more pass rushers. Nothing wrong with getting more pass rushers.
Nothing wrong with getting to the quarterback.
It would not cost a lot to get to Davi Clouty at his age. What he brings, it would be, I want to say, a minimal contract, $6 million contract, $5 million contract, one-year [music] deal.
And if that's what they're trying to do, I I think that's definitely doable. The Lions got around 12.5 million in cap available to use besides the, you know, the 12.5 they're probably going to give to all the draft picks once it's all signed and said and done. So, Lions got a little bit of money to work with if they want to bring in a Frell, if they want to bring in a Clowney or if they want to bring in somebody else like a Joey Bosa. [music] There's plenty of other veterans on the market that the Lions can bring on to help this team out if they're wanting to go that route. Me, I am on the side of more the marrier.
More pass rushers the better. So, I'm always about that. And with Alliance roster how it's constructed right now with a lot of young talent, I don't mind it at all. So, would you sign Java Clowny? Let me know your thoughts with S for sign and P for pass. Terry Arnold, he is speaking to the media and again and again and again. Let's get to listen to what this man has to say. He talks a lot a bit about training camp. He says it's hard and the intensity are two different things. He explained hard is you can go out there and practice and you can make something [music] hard. But to be able to have that level of intensity for two hours and to just go out there and see the best players in what the NFL is doing. Of course, we have very intense intense intense intense training camp and and that's nothing wrong with that. if they beat me or something, he'll come back and tell me why he did it." Arnold said about quarterback Jared Goff or what he's rating or what he's looking for. It's right there. Everything to me. It's just help me because get better player in transition to be a better player. And that's what you're supposed to do, right? You get help from the offense. If you if you're a young quarterback, what's the best what's the best way to go? You talk to Jared Goff. You talk to the receiver saying Brown. They're going to tell you a little bit of things to to help him out. And that that's good.
That's a good good good thing. And for Detroit, I would be perfectly fine with that. Terry Arnold, I do believe he is getting better. Again, the issues with Arnold is not the I wouldn't necessarily say all the play on the field, but it's more of getting out of his head, right?
Stop stop making handsy moves. Stop grabbing. He did get better, but he's got to stay healthy as well. So, these come together. If he can just stay healthy, I think he can grow a little bit. can become that number one, but he's got to have his head clear and not make dumb decisions on and off the field. And he's got to continue to grow.
He's got to learn. But I think if he fails, if Taran Arnold fails, it's not due the fact that he doesn't have the personality and the grit. I think he has a very strong mental aspect to his game.
Unlike Jeff Okudter or something like that, I think he's very strong mentally.
[snorts] His more is probably just ability on the field and his body, right? Sometimes the bodies just give out and he's had a lot of injuries.
Hopefully that's not the case. We want him to be here for the long time. But I think he's got the mental capacity. Just get rid of the dumb decisions off the field. You know, think smart, understand who you are, grow. Talk to Jameson Williams. He grew very well under Detroit, right? So, let me [snorts] know your thoughts in today's Lions news.
Arios.
