Cherenkov radiation is emitted when a charged particle travels through a transparent dielectric medium at a speed exceeding the speed of light in that medium, polarizing the medium's molecules which then emit electromagnetic waves that reinforce each other through constructive interference, forming a coherent wavefront similar to a sonic boom.
