Corbett Wall expertly dissects how extreme thermal stress disrupts market logistics, creating a stark price divergence between different cattle classes. This report serves as a sobering reminder that in the livestock trade, the thermometer often dictates the bottom line as much as the ticker tape.

Also dog days of summer.
Tell you what it is hot.
Tell you what it it's record heat in the plains.
Here in Amarillo this week it's it's 104, 105, 106.
You just name it. Going to get up there really high.
It's it's a really hot all up through the plains. The the humidity's higher.
If you get north of here up there, they're having a lot of problems up there. I'll tell you what. It's you know, this market's one thing going down, but if you have a big old fat steer out there you've been feeding for and then you got all that money invested in him. He was expensive to start with.
If he tips over in this heat, tell you what that takes the wind out of you and and out of your uh uh uh you know, ability to make up a profit on that pen. A lot of these cattle aren't working right now, but uh uh it's hot up there. There are several plants in the northern plains that have canceled kill for Wednesday. That doesn't help a thing, guys. All of them pretty much uh citing heat-related problems, but that was just in kind of here uh before I give this uh report to you.
Okay, what uh my old friend Dave Smith, who reported markets in uh south-central Missouri, uh he was always very poetic in the way he put things and always put a good commentary section in his market reports. He was the best auction market reporter that I ever worked with and uh he he reported markets for me down in in uh in West Plains, Missouri, right in that area, Mountain Mount Vernon Mountain Grove area. And uh he he was he was a character himself, but uh on days like this and when it was so dang hot, he'd say the livestock movement in south-central Missouri was mostly towards the shade and the ponds. And uh he had a lot of great quotes like that.
I'll tell you what, where he reported markets in West Plains, Missouri, at Ozarks Regional Stockyards, they had 450 head on Tuesday, guys. It's just hot.
And now we're getting kind of concerns about these grains. I mean, we've we've had fairly cheap grain here for the for the recent memory there. Haven't had any really expensive feed costs, guys, but this extreme heat uh while while that uh grain's putting kernels on, they say is not good. We've got some concerns over the the global supply of the of this corn, guys. And uh there's some analysts that are saying that we've got a good chance for this grain to be quite a bit higher. And it has been kind of working higher on the board, so that's something you want to be looking at, too. Uh one thing that has not suffered is these slaughter cows and bulls. They they have not skipped a beat, guys, right through this last three or four weeks here while this other cattle markets have been selling off here. Course, our beef's been down. That doesn't seem to bother the cows.
Your your fat cattle have been down, feeders been down a bunch, boards been down. Slaughter cows and bulls still selling right along, guys. And and as far as we know, your replacement still selling pretty well, too. As you notice your heifer calves sometimes out sell your steer calves. Not even sure if they're going to go for replacements.
It's just the ability to have that right to do it, guys. But Northern Livestock Video still selling cattle pretty well up there in Billings, Montana. Tell you what, they've sold quite a few October delivery five-weight steers, light five-weight steers weighing around 500 lb from there up to 550 up in northern I mean, north delivery Montana, Wyoming, up in that country for October. Most of them bringing in that 515 range on the average. That's still pretty dang good, guys.
Cattle on feed estimates, some of them are out.
On feed July 1st estimates are 102.2% of the same report a year ago, guys.
June placements at 98.0, and that was a fairly narrow range, more narrow from your average of the analysts there than typical, but some of your industry had expressed expectations of that number being much lower than that. So, it'll be interesting to see how it comes out. And June marketings at 97.0 percent of the same report a year ago, guys. Let's talk about your board on Tuesday. August live cattle futures were up 15 cents at 226.67.
October was down 7 cents at 223.22.
Back months on live cattle down 10 to up 70 cents. So, just pretty much steady day in your live cattle pits there. Uh August feeder cattle on Tuesday down 245 at 349.55.
September was down a buck 27 at 344.97.
Your back months on feeder cattle down a quarter to up as much as 290. And that was on next August at 290, but still only sitting at 323.80. And that's a year off, guys. Talk about your grains.
December corn futures up 2 and 1/4 cent a bushel at 475 and 1/4. Beans for November down 4 cents a bushel at 1222 and 1/4. In September hard red winter wheat up 10 and 3/4 cent at 734 and 1/2.
Look at your fat cattle trade. We did have a little dab of negotiated fed cattle trade out of your Midwest there.
It was 800 head in Iowa that brought 232 on a live basis and some at 375.
Didn't see anything at all, but the only place we could find it would be in Nebraska or Kansas. Course Colorado and Texas are both confidential, so we have no right to know what's going on there.
Uh according to the USDA, I guess. But, uh did have a market finder like we always do on Tuesday. Stockman's Livestock Market in Yankton, South Dakota. They only had 300 head in overnight. It's hot up there, too, guys.
The heat's sapping those fat cattle.
Had 1,050 for the fed cattle auction in Yankton on Tuesday. Conventional fed cattle sell $7 to $12 lower from 734 to 740.75.
They won't bring that much on a direct basis, guys. But, uh program cattle were not really well tested. Didn't have enough of them to really put anything together there. But, uh box beef cutout values lower again. Just that that one little day on Monday hasn't turned things around, guys. Choice cuts down 319 at 366.91.
Selects were down a dollar 22 at 354.23.
How about your slaughter?
Through the first two days of the week, estimated cattle slaughter 205,000.
That is 11,000 less than last week at this point and 14,000 less than this point a year ago.
And if indeed those plants are dark on Wednesday, that's going to make it a lot less. I'll tell you what, hate to see them shutting those plants down, guys.
Let's talk about what else is going on.
A lot of you guys have talked about the National Beef Wire TV that I have scrolling behind me when I'm at the home base here. And this is a very interesting screen if you guys have seen it in our broadcasted barns or some offices have it in there. Tell you what, it's got the best quotes from the last 24 hours scrolling at top the bottom the top and the bottom of the screen. It's got up-to-date industry news going on in the middle. Got your futures going on.
It's got your meat markets up there.
It's really, really good tool there, guys. And you can get that on your phone now. It's a just a small price to pay. I think we're at $10 a month or $100 a year. And don't quote me on that, but I think that's right.
But National Beef Wire TV is on your mobile now. So, I'll tell you what, get a hold of us at DV Auctioneer. Send a message National Beef Wire and get that information to you. Also, Char Advantage is going to be coming up this fall, guys. It's it's from your American International Charolais Association.

We're trying to get those consigners together with those guys that are wanting to buy those types of cattle.

That was down 4.33 just compared to late Monday's trade there. That's a ton.
Uh your your steer tracker, last 25 lots of five head or more that go on the RTI was just at 343.22.
So, down quite a bit, guys. Latest CME cash feeder cattle index sitting at 356.22.
Starting to tighten up a little bit.
But, uh don't forget about uh some sales are going to be going on here today on Wednesday. Bassett Livestock Auction in Bassett, Nebraska. 2,500.
They won't be bringing what they brought 2 weeks ago, but they'll be bringing pretty good. They've got the good cattle to sell there, guys. And then, don't forget about Maryville Livestock Auction in Maryville, Missouri. Their sale on Thursday. They've got uh kind of a yearling special going on there. My dear friend, Mike Freeden from Fawcett, Missouri is going to be there with a about 110 to 120 head of 8 to 950 lb yearling steers. He's had them forever, guys. They are green as gourds. He doesn't spend any money on them. He might He might get a half of 5-gallon bucket to get them in and spray them or something like that for the whole herd.
Tell you what, they are green, green, green, and they'll feed like nothing ever before. Check them out, guys. Of course, the Ruoff cattle are coming in there.
He's got a load of 900 lb steers. Got another set of yearlings coming in there. So, check out Maryville Livestock Auction. Both it and Bassett going to be on dvauction.com.
Let's talk about big sales on Tuesday.
Of course, Beaver County Stockyards in Beaver, Oklahoma had a lighter run for them for the for the heat, and they started at 6:00 in the morning. Hell, they were completely done by noon. And Beaver County Stockyards had 2,550 head.
They sold feeder steers $7 to $10 lower than they were a ton lower last week.
Just getting with the times there.
Feeder heifers were $5 lower. Steer calves, they had some good ones sold $7 to $11 higher. And the heifer calves were $4 higher in a light test. Beaver was your superior still sales, home of superior standard livestock equipment.
Stick out sale of the day. Check out this automated market report through Cattle Market Central, and I'll give you your best tested weight groups in the 100 lb weighted averages on them. They had 174 of the peewee three-weight steers average 339 at 60264.
They still bring something. They got a lot of time to turn around. 211 head of the four-weight steers average 429 at 54503.
How about 334 head of the six-weight steers? They average 649 at 38919.
349 head of the 8 weight steers averaged 858 at 34997.
That's pretty respectable. And 411 head of the 9 weight feeder steers in Beaver, Oklahoma averaged 940 at 33327.
How about the heifers? 145 head of the peewee 3 weight heifer calves averaged 330 at 50784.
237 head of the 4 weight heifers averaged 434 at 46287.
And 176 head of the 7 weight heifers averaged 726 at 34693.
The most impressive quote that I saw come out of Beaver, Oklahoma on Tuesday was 50 head of steers that weighed 899 or just a ear flop away from 900 lb full smooth and bring 352.
Can't get that most places, guys. That's really good. Give you some other independent quotes or individual quotes that are impressive from all around.
How about Welch Stockyards in Welch, Oklahoma? Well, up there in northeast Oklahoma, it's hot and sticky up there, guys. 57 steers weighed 714 and bring 402. Thought that was a good quote for the way things are, guys. And of course, Kimball Livestock Exchange in Kimball, South Dakota. Tell you what, they had a heck of a sale on Tuesday.
They sold 223 head of the of the diner cattle there, the family cattle. They weighed 1009 lb and bring 32985.
But the most impressive quote that I saw anywhere on Tuesday, you're Mac Wheresin, no BS, top quote for the day come out of Fallon Livestock just outside of Fallon, Nevada, guys. They sold 120 beef on dairy steer calves. They weighed 418 and bring 587.
Tell you what, they had some fancy steers in Beaver, Oklahoma that weighed the same >> [clears throat] >> and a pretty good slug of them and they only bring 580 and they were all beef, guys. It's beef on dairy deals coming.
That's your feeder flash for Wednesday.
