What is Upside Participation in Annuities?

[00:00:00]Hey folks, it's Shawn Plummer over at the Annuity Expert. In today's video, I'm answering the question, what is upside participation in annuities? Okay, so with fixed index annuity, um you're you you buy the fixed index annuity to have 100% downside protection and have limited upside potential, okay? So, you either got a cap or you have what's called a participation rate, okay? So, the upside participation is in regards to the participation rate. This can also apply to a registered index linked annuity. We call it a RILA annuity, uh but you can lose money in a RILA annuity. And a participation upside participation means how whatever the upside is, you get to participate in a certain percentage of that, typically with no cap, right? So, for example, you know, I own a fixed index annuity uh and I use the S&P 500.

[00:00:54]I have a 55% participation rate. So, whatever the S&P returns each year, I'm only getting 55% of it. So, if I got 10% returned uh from the S&P 500, I'm going to collect 5 and 1/2% from it. Just just for easy math, right?

[00:01:10]Um and then when you lock in the gains, you lock in those gains and there's no going backwards, and that's upside participation.

[00:01:18]Um there's even options for you to uh pay for higher participation uh with fixed index annuities uh and still have that 100% downside protection. So, um there are certain annuities out there that are designed for that.
