This analysis highlights the extreme volatility of a market driven more by hype and injury reports than intrinsic value. It effectively exposes sports card "investing" as high-stakes speculation disguised as financial strategy.

These Cards Are RISING FAST… But Others Are Crashing Hard (WATCH OUT)Added:
This is going to be a really fun video today. I have some incredible card charts and graphs that are going to make you say, "Wow." So, let's go ahead and get started and let's get started with this guy. How about Mike Trout? This graph is so great to see. I am so happy to see Mike Trout doing well this year and to see his cards going up. And you can see here on the chart, the season started, you know, right around here and his cards have been going up ever since.
So, of course, we're going to look at Mike Trout's classic iconic 2011 Topps update card in PSA 10 and PSA 9 condition. And look, unfortunately, Mike Trout's cards were going down a lot over the previous seasons, right?
Unfortunately, he's been plagued with injury issues and the Angels haven't been very relevant. But this year, he's come out of the gate playing really, really well again. Hopefully, this is the year that the collectors of his cards were hoping to see and are going to get to see. Let's keep going with Mike Trout. Another guy here who's been extremely hot. You guys know about Showi Otani. This has been one of the hottest of all of Showi Otani's cards. This is his 2023 tops all aces card in PSA 10.
Not a particularly rare card. You can see the population of the card over there. Almost 3,000 on the population count of this card. Back in 2023, the all aces were pretty common. Now, they're much more rare in the newer sets, but in 2023, they weren't. But that hasn't stopped this card from going absolutely nuclear in the sports card market over the course of the last six months. Now, it has finally flattened out since the season started. You can kind of see here how this uh has flattened out. So, it's not it's no longer rising the way that it was. But what a rise this card had over the last 6 months. Let's check in on a couple of Show Otani's other cards next. This is Zotani's classic 2018 Bowman in a PSA 10. We've also got his 2018 Tops and his 2018 Tops Chrome in PSA 10s. And you know, these have been hot over the last 6 months as well. You can see the charts. All of Otan's cards have been hot. Like this is the line here of these cards kind of doubling. And so you can see how, you know, these cards have either doubled or close to doubled over the course of the last six months. But they have calmed down a little bit since the season started. If you look here, they're starting to get a little bit flat now. So, they're kind of they're kind of flattening off. We'll see how Otani does the rest of this year and where his cards go from here. Let's do football. We got Kyler Murray up on the screen. This one's going to be really interesting, right? Because Kyler Murray, there was not a lot of excitement about him at the end of last season when he was with the Cardinals.
But then, oh yeah, there we go. There's the news that Kyler Murray was dealt to the Minnesota Vikings and he's going to be the new man in Minnesota. You can see the lift that his cards got when that broke. They've been they they've remained up ever since then. They haven't gone up any further, but they've remained up ever since then. But that is a completely opposite story of this next guy. Look at this one. This is JJ McCarthy. Of course, this was the quarterback in Minnesota. And unfortunately, his season ended poorly.
And now Kyler Murray's in there competing for the starting job. So JJ McCarthy maybe becoming somewhat of an afterthought amongst card collectors. I got three of his high-end cards up here on the screen. This is his 2024 Explosive in PSA 10, his 2024 Kaboom in PSA 10, and his 2024 Downtown in PSA 10.
All three rookie cars for him. And this is the last 6 months. And you can see these all started going down well before the Kyler Murray news was even announced. These things started to fall just with how last season ended for him and the Vikings. And then they've fallen a little bit further since that Kyler Murray news was announced as well. So unfortunately, if you have any JJ McCarthy in your collection, you're probably not doing really too well right now. Let's go look at some other quarterbacks. Caleb Williams, he's been a positive story. This is his cards over the last 6 months. We've got his 2024 Donress Base, Optic Base, and Prism Base, and PSA 10. All three relatively affordable cards. Doesn't matter. All three of these cards have gone crazy over the course of the last 6 months. In fact, look at this. We're up 241% 293% 251% over the last 6 months. What a rise. And of course, a lot of that rise was leading into the playoffs. And you know that playoff performance that he had that was very, very memorable. It's really a late season into the playoffs rise here. Since the season ended, they've been relatively flat. Some of them have actually been ticking up a little bit since the season ended. I think there's going to be a lot of excitement about Caleb Williams going into next season. Also, the Nationals in Chicago this year, you know, so I think there's a lot of actually good reasons why Caleb Williams cards may continue to tick up this off seasonason. So, I would pay very close attention to these graphs. Let's look at our next quarterback. This is my guy in Atlanta, Michael Pennix Jr. I've got a lot of his cards and unfortunately, they've not been doing what Caleb Williams cards have been doing, right? They they've not been as bad as JJ McCarthy, but they've not been good either. You can see they're they're a little down over the course of the last 180 days. Now, there's a little bit of uncertainty. Of course, he got injured late in the season and things started to dip, right?
Things have come back up a little bit now that we've been in the offseason, but there's still some uncertainty with him when he's going to come back. You got Tua who's now in Miami who might who's who who has come to Atlanta from Miami and he might start the season. So, how is that going to affect this guy's cards as the season gets underway? I'm not super optimistic, unfortunately, right now that we're going to see much of a rise with Michael Penn's cards this off season. I think they'll probably stay relatively flat. So, you know, hopefully he gets back healthy and is able to play again this fall. Let's look at the next one here. Let's go a little classic. We're going to change things a little bit. Instead of all these modern quarterbacks and, you know, baseball players, let's go a little more classic.
Let's go Billy Ripken. And you want to talk about the one of the most iconic cards in sports card history for all the wrong reasons. For all the wrong reasons. But it is the Billy Ripken 1989 Fleer FF error card where there was some unfortunate things written on the bottom of that baseball bat that Billy Ripken was holding. This is such an iconic card that people are wanting to add it to their collection. And even though it's a card from many, many years ago, it's up a lot over the last 180 days. In fact, we're looking at the card here in PSA 10, PSA 9, and PSA 8 condition. And all of these have had some lift over the last 180 days as people are continuing to add these cards to their collection.
The PSA 10 is up 26% over the last 180 days. That is now a $1,080 card. It crossed the $1,000 threshold this year. Pretty cool to see this card getting that type of attention. Let's go next to Wembi. There has been no player hotter in basketball over the last few months than Wem. And you can see, look at the rise of Wemby's cards. It really was leading into the playoffs since the playoffs have gotten underway. His cards have actually been relatively flat. Of course, he did have the concussion. He did miss a little bit of time, but he's back looking really good now. Uh, but they've been relatively flat since the playoffs got underway. But look at this rise that occurred leading into the playoffs. He had a great last month of the regular season. And there was a lot of excitement about the Spurs and about Wemby making his first playoff appearance. And of course, he started off the playoffs extremely hot, setting the all-time Spurs record for points in his first playoff game. And you could see how his card prices have really reflected that. This, by the way, is this Prism base, Prism Silver and and Prism Ice rookie cars from 2023, all in PSA 10 condition.
They're up 40 to 80% over the course of the last 180 days. Webby has proven, at least for right now, to be a really, really good investment. And hey, if the Spurs continue to roll in the playoffs, watch out. This graph could go a lot higher. Let me interrupt this video to tell you that I am live on whatnot right now, breaking the brand new 2025 Tops Chrome Football. I'm live from 5:30 to 8:00 PM Tuesday and Wednesday night on our Cards HQ Blitz channel on whatnot with all kinds of Tops Chrome football breaks. I would love for you to come hang out with me and in fact the QR code on the screen and the link in our show description below will give you $15 free if you're a first-time whatnot customer to come join me live right now on Cards HQ Blitz on whatnot. Okay. Have you guys been investing in soccer cards knowing that the World Cup is coming? I talked about it a lot on this channel last year. I said, "Ladies and gentlemen, it's a good time to buy soccer cards because I think there's going to be a lot of hype and excitement about the World Cup." I hope you listened because look at Mbappe.
Mbappe. And it's not just Mbappe. We could do Yamal. We could do a lot of other players, but Mbappé is an example of a guy who's seen his cards rising as we're approaching the World Cup this summer. This is the last 180 days of Mbappé's 2017 Topps Chrome UEFA Champions League rookie card in PSA 10.
And then the refractor of that card in PSA 10. Both of these cards are up substantially. In fact, the base of this card has more than doubled. That's the dark blue line. This card has more than doubled over the course of the last 180 days. It is now a $453 card, but that card was down closer to $200 if you go back 180 days ago. But it's not just Mbappe. Look at this next one. It's the legend. How about Messi?
Messi's cards have been an exceptional investment, especially over the last 180 days. They continue to go up and up and up some more. This is Messi's 2014 Prism World Cup base card in PSA 10 and in PSA 9 condition. These are both up a ton. In fact, the PSA 10, the dark blue line, is up 172% over the course of the last 180 days.
That is a huge gain for that card. I hope you squirreled some soccer cards away in your collection six months ago because if you did, you're pretty happy with the results of a lot of these cards right now. All right, let's switch away from soccer. Let's let's talk about some cards that unfortunately are going the opposite direction because we just talked about a lot of cards that are doing good. Let's talk about some cards that aren't doing as good. Nick Curts is one of those guys who so far this season isn't doing as well. Now, last season, Nick Curts's cards were incredibly hot.
He won the Rookie of the Year award and his cards were going up all season long.
Not the case this season. What you see here on the on the graph is this is he got a little bit of a rise in the offseason, right? So, this is he got a little bit of rise in December and January. And of course, we're looking at his 2024 Bowman Draft and his Bowman Draft Refractor from Bowman Chrome 2024 in PSA 10 condition. You got a little bit of an offseason rise, but then the season starts. Spring training and the season are getting underway right around here, and it's kind of been downhill ever since. His cards have been dropping as this season has gone on. Overall, they're down between 10 and 27% over the course of the last 180 days. So, eh, not a great start for Nick Curtz. Well, take a look at another guy who, well, he actually had a great start, VJ Edgecomb.
He had a great start to the season. In fact, his cards were so hot. He was a rookie that the first half of the season, everybody was like, "Wow, VJ Edgecomb is a breakout rookie sensation this year." Well, things have cooled off a little bit since, you know, since that incredibly hot start. But you can see his cards came out the gate pretty hot.
they kind of settled down as the year went on. Now, some of this too is just naturally, you know, some of the early sales of his Tops and Tops Chrome uh base cards in PSA 10 were pretty high compared and the market settled on it a little bit. So, some of this is market settling and some of this is the VJ Edgecomb hype wearing off. But unfortunately, if you were one of the people that bought his cards early in this range in PSA 10 when they first hit the market, you're down 65% or 67%. Not a great place to be. Let's look at the next one here. John Morance. Yeah. Yeah.
Not a great place to be either. Much like VJ Edgecomb. Unfortunately, Jarant just seems to continuously go down. He's been continuously going down for like the last five or six years. Not wonderful. This is Jarant's rookie downtown from 2019. One and one and one in PSA 10 and his 2019 Prism Silver in PSA 10. This is the last six months. Not great. We're going in the wrong direction. All right, let's look at the next player. Uh, Cal Raleigh.
Unfortunately, Cal Raleigh is going in the wrong direction as well. Much like Nick Curts, there was so much excitement about Cal Raleigh last baseball season.
Of course, this guy slug 60 home runs and, you know, all-time great season for a catcher. This season, he's not been the same. He's just not been the same.
People were hoping that he was going to come off and, you know, tear the leather off the baseball to start the season, and he hasn't done it to the same degree he was doing last season. He's been in a bit of a slump. his batting averages down. This is his 2019 Bowman Chrome PSA 10 and the refractor from 2019 Bowman Chrome and PSA 10. You can see both of these. Not a tons of sales of these cards. These are low population, by the way. Pop 107 and POP 40. Those are the auto versions of those two cards. Um, but uh not a ton of sales, but when they're selling, you can see the direction they're heading. That's not a good direction for your cards to be heading, ladies and gentlemen. By the way, all of these charts and graphs that I'm showing you in today's episode, these are all from Market Movers. Not only can you, this is the desktop version of Market Movers, where we can see all these charts and graphs, but we also have an incredible mobile app that we recently released a brand new version of. You can scan cards with your phone and get charts and graphs up instantly by just scanning a raw or graded card.
You got to check it out, guys. Go get the Market Movers app. Go to the app store on your phone and download Market Mover so you can look at these charts and graphs on your own. Let's go to the next one. Let's look at Zachary Rezes.
He's our guy here in Atlanta. He was the number one draft pick. People forget this. Rez was the number one draft pick in the 2024 NBA draft. The Hawks actually did really good the second half of the season. They dealt Trey Young and they really won a lot of games, but Reza Shay was not really the reason why. They had other stars on the team like Jaylen Johnson who really really stepped up.
Dyson Daniels Reza, you know, maybe not living up to the number one draft pick excitement and unfortunately his cards are telling this story. This is his 2024 optic downtown PSA 10 and his 2024 prison manga in PSA 10. Both rookies and the last six months on both of these cards unfortunately pretty ugly. All right, let's look at the next one. Okay, this is just simply an example of don't be the first person to buy a hot new card when it hits market because this there's nothing wrong with this card. I mean Steph Curry his 2024 Prism Black Manga card. This is an all-time great card in my opinion.
Love the chef artwork. PSA 10. Fairly low population of pop 36 in PSA 10 on this card. This is an all-timer card, but it is down 30% since its first sale. Well, why did that happen? You know, because the first time it ever sold, it sells for a really high price and then subsequent sales naturally go down. This doesn't necessarily have anything to do with Steph Curry's play or anything of that nature. This really has everything to do with the fact that if you're if you're the first one buying a brand new case hit insert, first graded copy ever when it hits the market, you better believe that probably subsequent sales unfortunately are going to be a little bit lower. And that's what happened with this card. All right, let's look at Okay, this guy's interesting to think about. Uh Jack Haggleó. So, he's been up and down. You can see it on the graph. I love this guy. Big power hitter, of course, came from the University of Florida. Jack actually was at Cards HQ pretty recently. Uh, shopped our store, bought some cards, big-time card collector, really rooting for Jack to succeed. And you can see, you know, last season wasn't maybe as exciting as some hope that it would be, but there was a lot of excitement about his cards going into this season. So, this is your offseason rise. We're starting here around the first of of the year, and you can see the rise that occurred all the way through opening day. So that's your rise through opening day right here. But then since opening days occurred and the season started, they kind of come back down a little bit. Unfortunately, his cards, you know, and and he's he's doing okay. He's doing okay, but he's not been tearing it up at the pace that people were hoping this season. So, his cards has settled down a little bit. Of course, all of us here at Sports Card Investor and Cards HQ, we are rooting Jack on and we all think he's going to be a superstar in the future. All right, let's take a look at the next one. Let's go. Let's go classic. Let's go classic once again, guys. We're going 2003 LeBron James rookie card. His tops rookie card in PSA 10 and his tops chrome rookie card in PSA 10. Look at the chart. These things, like a lot of classic cards, these things have done really well in the sports card market over the course of the last 6 months.
And maybe he got a little bit of a boost here because the Lakers started the playoffs really hot. You know, they came out with that 3 lead against Houston which surprised a lot of people. So maybe that gave them a little bit of a further boost. By the way, this one really low sale. Why do you think that was? We had that eBay outage. Remember that there was an eBay outage that occurred on that day. And so there were certain sales on eBay that went for below market value because of the eBay outage. And that's that is one of those sales that hit. Some of these sales are getting cancelled now, but that one hit below market value. Take that one out of the equation and you can see how the graph is just going up and up with LeBron. Really great to see. Happy to see LeBron get that kind of love. Let's go to another classic card. How about Kobe? Kobe's up even more than LeBron.
This is uh this is overall over the last couple years, Kobe's cards have been even hotter. Uh this is Kobe's classic 1996 tops base card in PSA 10. Also PSA 9 and PSA 8. So, no matter what your investment level is, the PSA 8 is $133 today. The PSA 9 is $222. The PSA 10 is $1,713.
That escalated quickly, but no matter where you are on here, you're up a lot.
You're up anywhere between 72% and 58% over the course of the last 6 months.
You can see that graph on the screen.
All of them are going up pretty much like level with each other. They're kind of going up in concert. That happens a lot with cards like this that transact a lot. You typically see, you know, the grades kind of all moving together. And that's what we're seeing here with Kobe Bryant's iconic 1996 Topps rookie card.
All right, I got a few more graphs for you. Let's look at Paige Becker's. This one surprised me. This one surprised me.
Why are Paige Becker's cards going down?
She had a good season last year. She had a great season last year. She bulked up some in the off season.
I think she's gonna have a great season this year, even better season this year.
There's a lot of people excited about her sophomore campaign in the WNBA. So, why are her cards going down? I'm not sure. But you're looking here at her Donris rated rookie, her her this is actually from Prism, her prism rated rookie, and her prism blue velocity and PSA 10. All three of these have been actually going down over the last six months. I'm a little surprised, especially when you look at this next graph because this next graph is Caitlyn Clark. She's been doing the opposite.
Total opposite of Paige Beckers. Caitlyn Clark has been rising, you know, going into the season here, starting at the end of December, early January. You can see how her cards have been rising and rising as we get closer to the new WNBA season. A lot of renewed excitement around Caitlyn Clark. Now, the only difference I can think of between those two is last year, Caitlyn Clark actually kind of had a down year compared to her expectations. She had injuries. You know, she had a down year. Her cards went down last year, whereas Paige Becker last year, Paige Beckers last year was hot. So, maybe it's just a matter of how they ended last year.
Paige Beckers was high, Caitlin Clark was low comparative to their expectation, right? So, maybe as a result of that, Caitlin Clark just had room to go up and and Paige Beckers unfortunately fell off. I don't know.
But if we look at this next one, I mean, even Angel Reese is going up, you know.
So, Caitlin Clark's going up, Angel Reese is going up. I don't know. Paige Becker should be going up, too. Maybe she's a buy right now. I don't know.
But, um, yeah, this is Angel Reese's 2024 Prison WNBA Ice, Silver, and Base all in PSA 10. Not a lot of sales of these cards, but they've been rising a little bit. And of course, Angel Reese was traded to Atlanta. So, we got her here in Atlanta now, which actually going to be excited to go see one of that team's games this upcoming season.
All right, let's take a look at some hockey. We haven't done any hockey yet.
How about Mlin Celebrini's cards? He's been one of the hotter players in the hockey card market over the course of the last 6 months. This is Celrini's 2024 Upper Deck Young Guns base card in PSA 10. And then his Upper Deck Young Guns Clearcut Cut card, much more rare card. only a population of 43 of that card in PSA 10. But both of these have been rising a pretty good amount in the market. In fact, that Young Guns base card in PSA 10, that dark blue line on your graph, this thing is up 267% over the last 180 days. That's an awesome rise for Celabbrini. Hopefully, if you're a hockey card collector, you've got at least one of his cards.
Let's take a look at the next one here.
Here's a baseball player, Kevin McGonagal, who there was a lot of hype and excitement about going into this season for the Detroit Tigers. And guess what? He's lived up to it. He's lived up to it. A lot of people are saying, "This guy's really delivering." You can see his card prices are really delivering.
These are up anywhere between 57% and 170% over the course of the last six months. And most of that rise has come since the season started because this was around your season start point here.
And you can see how a lot of that rise actually took place after the season started. It's good to see a young player performing at a high level and having his cards go up as a result. That's the case with McGonagal. All right, let's go. Let's look. Let's look at a little F1. How about Max Verstoppen? Let's get a Verstoppen card in here. This is his 2020 Tops Chrome Formula 1 base card and refractor in PSA 10. And and these have been doing pretty well over the last six months uh in the sports card hobby. I don't collect F1. I don't know a lot about F1. I'll be honest with you, I know this guy. I know he's one of the big names, you know, to collect for sure. And uh it's nice to see the collectors who are into F1 cards getting rewarded with some nice market gains over the last six months. All right, let's end with a few classic cards. I've lined a few up here for you at the end.
We got to take a look at what Ken Griffy Jr.'s 1989 Upper Deck rookie card is doing. This is the card that keeps going up. This has been a very hot card in the sports card market over the course of the last couple of years and it continues to go that direction and not as hot as it was maybe a year ago, but it's still going up. In the last 6 months, his 1989 Upper Deck in PSA 10 has now broken $5,000.
It is now up at $5,150.
That's up 12% over the last 6 months.
But it wasn't that long ago that that was a $2,000 card. It was not very long ago. And all of a sudden, now the card's up over $5,000. Great to see this card doing that. The PSA 9's considerably more affordable at $431 and the PSA 8 at $156, but both of those are up over 20% over the last 6 months. So, all of these cards continue to pay dividends for those who own them. Let's look at another classic card in Ricky Henderson.
This is Ricky Henderson's 1980 Tops base card. We've got it in PSA 9, PSA 8, and PSA 7 condition. Similar story to um to Ken Griffy Jr. These are up about 15 to 21% over the last 6 months. Not crazy gains, but these cards have been going up for a while now. So, this is just another good classic card that is showing a lot of increases. Let's end with this final card. Let's bring on the GOAT, Michael Jordan. And this is really interesting. I I didn't choose one of his rookie cards, one of his expensive 86 fleer 84 star cards. I went to the junk wax era. We've got a couple of his junk wax cards here. We've got Michael Jordan's 1989 fleer base and 1990 fleer base and PSA 10. The 1989 Fleer Base and PSA 10 is a population of,275.
The 1990 is a population of 8,491.
So these are not rare cards. They're from the junk wax era. Particularly the 1990 card is not a rare card in PSA 10 condition edition. Doesn't matter.
Doesn't matter. The 1989 card is up almost 67%. The 1990 card is up 90% over the course of the last 6 months. Here it is on the chart. Look at the continuous rise of both of these cards. And it's a pretty nice steady rise pattern over the last six months. It is great to see.
It's great to see Michael Jordan the goat doing so well and not and and his junkwax cards doing so well. That excites me as a collector who was collecting back in this era. All right, guys. I hope you enjoyed today's video.
