Is it 6mm or .243? Trying some 95 gr Noslers

[00:00:31]>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> All righty, y'all. Well, viewer Randall sent me some 95-grain Nosler, I believe they're partitions, to try in the 6 Creed.

[00:01:20]And I decided that, well, we're going to try them in the.243 as well.

[00:01:26]So, I played with a Gordon's reloading tool a little bit, and I found that loading both the 6 Creed and the.243 with 38.5 grains of H4350 should give me almost the same velocities. Gordon suggests that 6 Creed will be running at 2870 ft per second on average.

[00:01:51]And it suggests that the.243 will be running 2875.

[00:01:57]We're going to basically pit it side by side.

[00:02:01]We'll shoot a group through the 6 Creed, we'll shoot a group through the 243.

[00:02:06]Same bullet, same charge.

[00:02:09]The only difference is the cases are so slightly different. Be interesting to see what happens. Yes, I know I'm pitting a 26-in barrel competition rifle that weighs 18 and 1/2 lb against a Savage Axis 243 that weighs maybe 7 and 1/2, 8 lb.

[00:02:36]And funny thing is this 243 is the 243 that gave me a little bit of scope bite. So, give me a minute to run down and get the target set up.

[00:02:49]We'll get to shooting and we'll see how my 6 Creed stacks up against my 243.

[00:03:06]Got the chronograph running.

[00:03:09]And I've got five rounds with the 95-grain Nosler loaded. And for those who are interested in the load data, my OAL for the 6 Creedmoor is 2.62 in.

[00:03:27]That's base to tip.

[00:03:28]And my OAL for the 243 is 2.65 in base to tip. So, these things are loaded as close together or close to equal as I could make it.

[00:03:41]So, we're going to start with the 6 Creedmoor, 38.5 grains of H4350 and the 95-grain Nosler.

[00:05:07]28 87.8 29 34.9 Which gave us a five-shot average of 28 91.0 Extreme spread of 99.3 and a standard deviation of 32.9 uh 32.6 And other than that third shot, and they seem to stack up pretty nice.

[00:06:57]And the Bushnell 3x5 that came on it is one heck of a step down from my uh other scopes.

[00:07:08]These crosshairs, even at nine power, all the way zoomed in, completely cover that 1-in dot at 100 yards.

[00:08:23]I think one of the things we'll do after we shoot this is we'll check the trigger pull since I have the trigger pull gauge with me.

[00:08:37]Okay, this will be five rounds of.243 pushing the 95 grain Nosler bullet with 38.5 grains of H4350.

[00:09:15]That should be half an inch higher than it was zeroed for.

[00:09:22]And since the 6 Creedmoor hit quite a bit higher than the 107s and the 109s, I'm hoping this does, too.

[00:09:59]It's a good thing I got a camera down there because I don't see anything.

[00:11:28]So Gordon's was way off on the.243.

[00:11:37]It suggested that the same charge would have been 2875.

[00:11:45]Instead, our four-shot average, since I forgot to start the chronograph, was 2777.4 with an extreme spread of 20.2 and a standard deviation of 8.1.

[00:12:03]And even through this less than stellar scope, sure looks like I've got a group going at 4:00 on that dot.

[00:12:14]So, let me go pull that target and let's go see how we did.

[00:12:26]Gordon suggested 6 Creedmoor should be running 2870. We're running a little bit faster, you know, like 28 85, 2890, something like that.

[00:12:40]Five-shot group came in at 1.98 in.

[00:12:43]I don't know if that was me or if that was the ammo, but without that one, we are at.869 in.

[00:12:54]Hm.

[00:12:57]Moving over to the.243, Gordon suggested that that should be running 2875 with the same charge as the 6 Creedmoor, and it was only running 2777.

[00:13:11]So, 100 ft per glad I brought it up two clicks or half an inch, otherwise my group would have been down here in the right angle.

[00:13:22]Um and real quick reminder, at 100 yards, the crosshair completely covered the dot. I didn't even see any specs of yellow.

[00:13:36]But, our five-shot average, first shot being down here in the four, is 1.38 in. Since we took the wonky shot away off the other one, and we take it off of this one, that puts those next four at 0.714 in.

[00:13:51]I'll have to watch the video and see if this is the first shot.

[00:13:55]You know, that cold bore shift thing.

[00:13:57]Be interesting to see if that's the first shot.

[00:14:00]We know that this one's the third shot.

[00:14:04]But, even at 1.38 in, it's good enough for deer hunting. And if I could hunt with the Nosler 95-grain partitions in this state, I would tweak that load a little bit, and uh probably do pretty good.

[00:14:23]Of course, they think I need to change the scope that that Bushnell that came on that Savage Axis as part of the the package is not a very good scope. It's only a 3 by 9, and the glass is real distorted.

[00:15:01]So, yeah, the question is is it really a.243 or is it a 6 mm? I mean, they're the same bullet.

[00:15:11]In fact, the cases are almost the same.

[00:15:13]Just the the angle of the shoulder's basically the big difference.

[00:15:19]I imagine if I had a uh live 6 Creedmoor round available, I could probably chamber a live 6 Creedmoor round in here. I wouldn't try shooting it, but I bet it would chamber.

[00:15:32]So, we got our velocity.

[00:15:35]Of course, our velocity was only based off of four shots because I forgot to start chronograph for the first shot, but I'm real happy with the standard deviation on this.

[00:15:46]And what's what's interesting is I used the Intella Dropper for both charges. I just set it to 38.5.

[00:15:55]I loaded five 6 Creeds, and then I loaded five 243s.

[00:16:00]One right after the other.

[00:16:02]So, I can't blame the Intella Dropper for the swing because while we had a wide s ES and SD with the 6 Creedmoor, we got a really good standard deviation here of less than 10 at 8.1. So, that's why I think the 95 95 grain Nosler would be a good bullet for the 243.
