If you have severe periodontitis, you will notice that especially the front teeth are mobile. This is due to loosening the supporting bone as a result of the generalized chronic inflammation that those tissues present.
Patients prior to developing periodontal disease, they present on a stage of generalized inflammation induced by plaque, by the bacterial biofilm. This is what we diagnose as plaque induced gingivitis. There is no bone loss and the state of inflammation is reversible.
