Full Ear Training Lesson: Chords 6 and 5

[00:00:00]In this lesson, we study a pair of chords that we already know, but that we haven't yet combined together. And I personally like this combination very much. Those are chords six and five.

[00:00:18][music] It's actually the first time that we study a chord progression that doesn't involve the one chord at all. So now you most likely will feel the six chord as home and the five chord as a departure from home.

[00:00:44]Notice how relaxed and peaceful it is to be in the six chord [music] and how when we move to the five chord, we feel like we're away from home.

[00:00:53]The song couldn't end here. [music] it would feel unfinished and unresolved.

[00:00:58]And it's so soothing to go back to the six chord.

[00:01:07][music] Now notice the stepwise movement of the roots and the rocking back and forth between two adjacent notes, six and five.

[00:01:20][music] To me, this combination of chords creates a very laidback and cool mood.

[00:01:37]The six chord is a little bit melancholy, but the five chord balances it out, bringing lightness to the music.

[00:01:46]And together, they sound like two chords you would play at the beach under a palm tree.

[00:02:04]And because these two chords are consecutive chords from the major scale, they don't have a lot of notes in common. And that gives us a lot of interesting zigzag movements in our melody paths. Let's practice some of them together.
