In 2nd Kings 19:3, King Hezekiah is besieged by the Assyrian army. It is 701 BCE, one of the most acute political crises in the history of ancient Israel.
Hezekiah sends a message to the prophet Isaiah, and in it he uses a metaphor drawn from one of the most intense physical experiences the human body knows. The children have come to Mashber, and there is no strength to deliver. Mashber here means the critical moment of childbirth, either the birth canal or the birthing stool. The kingdom is in labor. The baby is crowning, and there is no strength left to push. For centuries, this was just a verse. Then, in 1876, the autobiographer Mosche Leib Lilienblum needed a Hebrew word for the concept Europeans called krisis, crisis.
Many had been proposed: moments of balance, the disease's decision, upheaval. Nothing stuck. Lilienblum divided his autobiography Chata'e Neurim, Sins of Youth, into four periods. The last was Days of Mashber and Despair. He adds the gloss krisis in parentheses, making the meaning explicit. He chose it for two reasons.
First, it's closest in sound to shever, a break, a shattering, and the force of the original passage, an Assyrian siege, a kingdom at the breaking point, a body in extremis.
