Why Your Brain Falls For This Money Trick #Gambling #Psychology #Science本站添加:
This trick that your brain falls for might be losing you a lot of money. All you need to do is predict what comes next. Five bits in a row.
>> Well, you see, as the animals we are, our brains are hardwired to look for patterns even when they don't exist.
This is why we can see faces in almost anything or read badly spelled sentences perfectly fine or distinguish a friend in a large crowd. But when you see five heads in a row, your brain starts craving balance. And so it assumes that tails has to come next, right? Well, there's a famous example of this from 1913 at the Monte Carlo Casino when black came up 26 times in a row in a game of roulette. Now, as gamblers heard about this amazing streak, they all flocked thinking that red just had to come next and people lost millions of dollars. This is the gamblers fallacy, also known as the Monte Carlo effect.
And it's when you know that each flip of the coin is independent of the last, despite the fact you feel like Tails just has to come next. In a similar way, when you gamble and have a series of losses, it can feel like you're due for a big win. And this changes the psychology of losing to be like progress towards your big win. But it's not. It's a fake sense of control that gambling companies rely on to keep you hooked.
Experts say that the first step to overcoming the gamblers fallacy is to think of the actual odds of something happening rather than just a gut feeling. And second, don't be afraid to ask for help. Australia has the highest losses of gambling per capita in the world. And a lot of this starts with the simple convincing idea that surely I'm due for a win.
