In criminal investigations, physical evidence such as video footage, DNA records, and digital communications are crucial for establishing timelines and proving intent; for example, in the Nolan Wells case, a video from Horn Island captured at 2:30 PM helped establish that the 18-year-old was alive at that time, while in the D4vd murder trial, prosecutors presented surveillance videos, DNA evidence, and phone records to demonstrate how the crime was planned and executed.

TMZ: New video released from Nolan Wells' disappearance, D4vd murder trial begins
Added:TMZ is following two major criminal investigations this morning, but before we ask them about that, we want to go back to the drama with the Cubs cuz it seemed like they had some inside baseball.
>> Yeah, Michael Babcock is live from the TMZ newsroom. Michael, uh we hate to put you on the spot here. I know we have some other topics to get to, but the Cubs, we were just talking about it. You know, it has a lot of people fired up after watching that video. Can you tell us some of what you guys have learned there at TMZ?
>> Yeah, you know what? And I I've not been working on that too much, so I'm I'm not sort of you know, uh up to date on on what the latest information is there, but I I know that a lot of people have been kind of discussing these videos and there's a there's a lot of conversation especially going on on social media right now. I I I wish I had the latest on what we had been told though.
>> I love how you smile when you're working on something but [laughter] you still are smiling.
That's why we love you.
>> Well, no, I'm look >> We get it. We get it.
>> I'm not I'm not There's a whole lot I don't know, so >> Okay, [laughter] well, there's a lot that you do know though.
>> Don't downplay it.
>> Well, you know, sometimes >> This isn't a controversial story with racial undertones certainly. This is that teenager Nolan Wells. He was on a boating trip with his friends and we have new video I'm told from Horn Island that could be the last image before his death. Tell us about that.
>> Yeah, and I mean it's it's such a puzzling case and it's it is I think in many ways captivated the attention of the country because people want answers.
You know, how does this 18-year-old young man How how does he just seemingly go missing and then obviously his body tragically turns up two days later on July 6th? We know he was with a group of friends. They were celebrating July 4th and they were seemingly having a good time. For some reason Nolan did not come back with his friends on that boat and obviously we know how this tragically ended. Now, as for this video, it was taken at about 2:30 p.m. The last time Nolan was seen was about 4:30 p.m. It's a video from far away. It's a panning shot, so it's certainly not, you know, what a clear up close video, but the point is that you can see him. You see him appearing to bend down picking up a drink, and it's quick, but it it at least it helps solidify the timeline.
>> Ah.
>> The Okay, you know, why I know he was okay at this point, and I think bottom line though still here we've got way more unanswered questions than we do answered ones.
>> A lot, and we know the family has called for a full investigation of figure out exactly what happened to their son, and they deserve to know what happened to their son. Uh we got to switch gears now and talk about this case, which is crazy to begin with. Um with David, you know, some of the clues people felt like, you know, there's a lot of people out there who call themselves sleuths looking at his videos that he put out and everything during this time, but we know the murder case uh as we're moving forward, prosecutors are set to lay out some really gruesome evidence. What do we know?
>> Y- Yeah, so that that's exactly what's going to happen today. This is the first day of the preliminary hearing for David. Uh obviously, he was arrested in April. He was charged with uh first-degree murder on top of some other serious charges uh going back to what police claim was the grizzly murder of a 14-year-old girl. Now, the prosecutors claim they've got a whole wealth of evidence from surveillance videos to DNA records to phone and text messages that show this horrible crime was being planned out by this guy, and and then enacted by him.
So, uh they they're going to get into all of that today presumably, and some of it is not going to be pretty. Uh there's going to be some difficult details and information that's talked about, but they're going to walk into that courtroom today, and they're going to present this evidence, and they're going to hopefully the prosecutors get the judge to say, "Okay, yes, there's enough here.
We're going to take this thing to trial." And obviously, David's life is on the line here with the first-degree murder charge on the table.
>> You know, Michael, when I look back at it, you know, when you follow folks on the internet, sometimes they uncover some really interesting stuff. And in this case, there were times when David was streaming, and then there were questions on if this was the 14-year-old, do you think any of that kind of evidence is going to play out in the courtroom here?
>> Yeah, oh, absolutely. I think that you're you're right. I mean, he had he was streaming a lot. There was there's a lot of public video out there where or photographs where you say, "Okay, I think I think I can actually see her in the background." I mean, yeah, there there are certainly there are certainly I think, you know, video there's assets out there that show that they had a relationship, and he was obviously of age. He's in his 20s. She was 13 when they met, 14 when she died.
So, uh you know, they shouldn't have been having or carrying on there he should not have been carrying on this relationship with her presumably to begin with anyway. So, it's just a it's a it's a horribly sad case when you read the details about him allegedly luring her to his home with the intent of harming her. It's it's it's very very difficult stuff. This was a girl who ran away from home. Her parents desperately wanted her back home, and obviously they never got that opportunity to bring their little girl back.
>> Oh, gosh. All right, Michael, thank you for your time.
>> Of course. Thanks, guys. I appreciate you having me.
