A thousand years ago, English was actually pretty consistent. Words were usually spelled close to how they sounded. A word like night was spelled kit, and every letter made a sound.
Linguists now call this old English. It came from Germanic roots, cousins of modern German and Dutch, brought to Britain long before English was called English. Then the Normans invaded England from what is now France. And for centuries afterward, England had a split personality.
The ruling class spoke French, the church spoke Latin, the common people spoke English, and it was English that absorbed all of it.
