Tiffany’s project is a masterclass in practical resilience, demonstrating how iterative problem-solving can overcome the limitations of a non-mathematical approach. It highlights the triumph of hands-on intuition over theoretical complexity in the face of real-world material inconsistencies.

It’s been hard… but It’s finally coming together
Added:I think we may have gotten ourselves into something we are completely unqualified for. We're building a lean-to attached to my shed because my outdoor storage situation is out of control. And in the last few days, we have already set the post, butchered the siding, and mounted the beams. The problem is that we've never built anything like this before, and we're hoping not to MESS IT UP.
WE'RE DOING THE RAFTERS, which is the board that goes from the back to the front [music] and then the roof sits on top. And I have to try to figure out that angle, and plus it's going to be cut around the beam, which is called a bird's mouth cut, I believe.
And there's a whole mathematical equation of how to do this that I want to avoid. So, I'm going to do it by eye. Grab your side.
All right. So, I'm just putting this against the board here, flush with the bottom. You see how there's a gap?
That's the angle I need to cut.
So, I think if I just I think if I just take this and you mark it, and it will give you the angle, and then you hope that that angle's right. I'm going to hope that that angle's right.
I might have to do this a couple times.
I did this with the ramp that I built, and [music] it took me a couple tries to cut it to get it right, but it wasn't that bad. And also, to hold it over there, I actually put a board. So, the board when it comes down is actually going to wrap around [music] this right here. So, I just put a temporary board there to tell me where this is going to drop [music] so that I could get the right angle over there. Help me drop it here. So, it touches here on the edge.
So, this is going to be cut out also at an [music] angle, and then it's at the edge over there.
When I start talking to you and like, "What? I can't hear you." And we're like, "You see?"
>> What? I can't hear you.
>> You should have worn ear protection.
>> I didn't wear ear protection and now I can't hear you.
>> No, I know. I left you deaf. Okay.
>> I don't have a hearing problem. I have a listening problem.
>> Almost.
>> Oh, come on. That's perfect. Look at that.
>> I am marking it again because it's [music] off. It's like slightly off.
It's just like a little bit of a gap.
I have my father judging me because [music] I am too much of a perfectionist.
Uh does it look flush on that side?
>> Yeah.
>> Once I got the angle perfectly cut, my dad marked the bird's mouth cut. I'm just going to cut a little bit with the circular saw wherever I can and then I'm going to cut the rest with the jigsaw cuz it's a weird cut.
>> [music] >> Oh, this actually cuts really fast.
That's >> [music] >> way bigger than a bird's mouth. That would be a um >> [laughter] >> What kind of mouth would that be?
>> Dinosaur.
>> Dinosaur mouth.
>> [laughter] >> Okay.
Uh yeah, let's see um Let's see if we can pull this off.
Ugh.
Oh, there's a problem.
>> [laughter] >> The bolt is in the way. This needs to go on the edge flush with the edge, but you see how the bolt's in the way? So, I'm going to have to do a smaller bird's mouth. I needed it to be that deep so that the roof pitch is as low thick [music] get.
That looks like it's going to be more of a bird's mouth cut.
>> Try again. You said mouse.
>> mouth >> You said mouse.
>> bird's mouth cut >> bird's >> mouth cut >> [laughter] >> Okay.
>> You said bird.
>> [laughter] >> It's 5:00. It's hot. That looks like it's going to be more of a bird's mouth cut.
Can you say it?
>> That looks like more of a bird's mouth cut than the previous one.
>> bird [snorts] >> bird >> bird's >> bird >> bird's bird's >> bird >> bird's >> mouth cut >> bird's >> bird's mouth cut >> There you go.
>> No?
>> Yeah.
>> No, that's That can't be right. This cut didn't work out. So, we spent the next 2 hours trying to figure out how to cut it and we didn't film any of it. So, Tony will do her best to recreate it.
NO?
SO, he's marking where all the rafters are going to go.
Uh we're moving this one to the edge to see if it's the same size and then we're cutting the rest. We're also sticking with the dinosaur mouth because if we go with the with the little one there's not enough of a pitch. roof looks almost flat, which I don't want cuz we want water to like >> [snorts] >> I'll see you second.
>> Well, we didn't really get much done today, but it was still a long day, so I decided to relax and tackle the rest tomorrow.
I live in Florida, [music] which basically means summer comes with thunderstorms and random power outages.
But who says I have to give up the things I enjoy just because the power went out? Luckily, I have the Anker 757 PowerHouse (PowerHouse 2000), which is the sponsor of this video. This is surprisingly compact for how much power it puts out, and it has outlets on both sides, which makes it easy to place just about anywhere. So, if I want to play my favorite video game or just enjoy a quick spa day, I don't have to worry about power outage ruining my plans. And would you believe this tiny thing can even power a fridge for up to 35 hours?
It can do all of this because of the lower idle consumption and stronger power efficiency. This is the perfect power station for everyday use. And with its 314 amp hour LFP battery, it's built to last for up to 15 years or 10,000 charge cycles. Anyways, I love that little thing. So, if you're interested in the Anker 757 PowerHouse 2000, I'll have the link in the description. It is available now. Thank you, Anker, for sponsoring this video.
So, I have to cut these a little bit. I want it to stick out maybe about 8 in, but that cut has to be straight because I think I'm going to put a a board in front of it as like a trim or I think it's fascia is what it's called. So, I need to cut it straight, but since it's at an angle, I need to figure out what the straight cut would be. There you go.
And that should be straight.
>> Are you sure?
>> No. Yeah.
Don't make me question myself.
>> [laughter] >> I'm sure now.
We'll see when we cut it.
>> Bugs?
>> Spider webs.
>> They build a lot faster than you guys do.
>> [laughter] >> I want to have both of the angles, the back angle and the front angle cut because that this is going to be my template for all the angles.
>> [music] >> I have to screw it temporarily here cuz there's nothing holding it. See?
I mean, it's a holding [music] by like a prayer, but I got to screw it in cuz if I start hammering over there, it'll like drop.
Now we deal with the other side.
>> Careful.
Okay.
Ooh, spider.
If you throw the spider at your camera person when she's on a ladder, you will have to stop production for the day and take her to the hospital because she will be dead.
>> I didn't throw it at you.
>> You threw it close enough.
>> I'm sorry.
>> She's in the zone today.
>> Oh, yeah. I woke up fresh with a fresh mind. I could not do these cuts last night.
>> I think we did more today than we did the past three.
>> [laughter] >> We only been working for less than an hour.
Today is the last day my dad is here.
So, whatever we don't get done today, I get to do by myself.
This is a temporary hold for me to mark that.
Okay.
What was that?
What was that?
I think I got it. Not Yeah, that should be good.
Okay, so that is Oops.
That's high as I'm going to go there.
How do I get that out angle?
I think >> Like I would measure the back end of the cut and then draw a straight line between the two.
>> No, that's that's not what I mean.
>> Measure it from here to here.
>> Okay, and mark I got it. I got it. Yeah, you're right.
>> That's what I said.
>> I I didn't understand it when you said it.
>> Yeah, so you had to listen to Joey instead.
>> He mansplained it better.
>> [laughter] [laughter] >> There.
Okay.
Okay, now now.
Put it past.
Put it here.
That's a huge gap.
So, I don't know what happened, but there's like a 3/8 of an inch gap on that side. So, I have to cut another board and recut the notch.
>> [music] >> All right, I got another one cut.
See.
Oh, I cut it the wrong way.
>> You cut it the wrong way?
>> The gap is doubled.
>> Shame.
Shame.
Shame.
Shame.
>> Board number three.
Oh, I forgot to put the screw on it.
But, let me see.
>> Is it flush there?
>> Yeah. It's almost flush. So, does it need to be cut a little?
>> Yeah, here.
>> Okay.
There's a gap.
Okay. Um I'm going to take it out.
I'm going to cut it out of the other side.
Are you flush?
No?
Is there more of a gap?
Okay, I don't understand what's going on.
So, I got finally got the size after I don't know how many cuts. I I I lost track. This size is fine, so we have this as a template, but we're testing [music] it because you know, I might not be the same size. So, that one's good. This one's good. We're about to test the next spot to see if we can use the same size. We can use this board as a template to cut it.
There you go.
Yeah, so just going to shave that a little bit.
>> Uh almost. I have to shave it a little bit here, but once I do that, yeah, it'll be pretty good.
>> It finally felt like we were making some progress, which is exactly when the weather decided to get involved.
>> [music] >> Well, it has stopped raining, kind of.
Still sprinkling, but I want to get more done.
So, we're still testing [music] to see the templates work. It looks like some of them are going to be off by a little bit, so we're just trying to test each one and cut as we go to try to fit up in.
Now, this is going to have to be cut.
It's really tight.
Got it.
Is there a gap?
>> Yep.
>> Misty!
You want to play?
But I'm working. Oh, you're going to be filthy. The ground [music] is wet.
Indie!
Let me see.
Let me see.
Oh my gosh, so muddy. Ugh.
Hi, Indie. Come here, you. Come here, you. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness.
Hello.
>> Do you have enough help now?
>> Yes.
Plenty of help. We'll get this done in no time.
All right. We'll try that, I guess.
Misty, let me see.
Misty! Oh, now you brought that filthy ball.
So, I'm going to secure them in the front now, and my dad is starting on that side.
I think this is just basically to like prevent it from shifting. Cuz it's also going to have like I'm going to put hurricane strap >> [snorts] >> I'm going to put hurricane straps on this, too. [music] So, it'll be like pretty secured on here.
All right. So, I'm about to put the hangers, but I'm hoping this is not in the way.
I actually don't know if I'm doing this in the right order. Like I don't know if we were supposed to put the hangers first.
>> [laughter] >> I am learning.
>> [music] >> So, whoever is watching this and cringing cuz I'm probably doing it wrong, I'm learning.
>> [screaming] >> What the >> Did it move?
>> [sighs] >> Yeah.
That's That little nail thing that holds it doesn't do anything.
It does not hold it.
It was a lie. You're supposed to hammer this in so it holds it.
>> [laughter] >> It definitely didn't hold it.
>> Hey Tiffany, there's another thing on this side.
>> That one?
>> Yeah, maybe you have to hammer that in, too. You're supposed to hammer both of them before you start screwing.
>> You're probably right. [music] I'm probably doing this all kinds of wrong.
Nope.
>> What the heck is that?
>> Something fell.
By the way, these do take different size screws. Like I'm doing 2 and 1/2 inch for the angle ones, and these are inch and a half. And they're all like specifically like structural screws to be used with hangers.
Okay.
That one not going anywhere.
That's it.
For today.
We're pretty badass. We just built that whole structure.
Took us forever, but we built it.
Thank you for helping me.
>> You're very welcome.
And to all the fans of DIY Tiff, I want to thank you for supporting the channel, supporting my beautiful daughter, and her beautiful partner.
And uh thank you especially for all the comments. It's my last day.
So, uh Tiffany will be continuing this project by herself.
But, uh she'll get it done, and I'm sure it'll be great.
So.
Very proud of you.
>> I need to build a trim that goes all around this.
Uh I think it's called fascia. Like, I knew I had to do that, but when I was making the list of materials, I didn't include the wood for that. So, I have to go to the store and get more wood.
And this is going to be interesting because my dad's gone, Tony started to edit, so I am now completely by myself working with big long boards on ladders.
So, we'll see how I how I uh pull this off.
I'm almost there. doing rush hour cuz there's a long line to check out.
Oh, no. I can't can't do this [music] bugs jumping on me.
So, this goes there.
So, I got to figure out how I'm going to hold it up there.
I think I have an idea.
I don't know if it will work, but I'm going to try it.
So, I'm using this bottom board here to hold the long board that I need to screw to each one of the rafters, see? And then this gives me an edge to put the wood on to. But, I need to add more clamps because I don't want this to fall on my head.
I'm going to test to see if this works.
I think this is going to work.
I just have to see if it's leveled.
Yeah.
I think. Maybe. This is not leveled.
But, maybe if I shim it.
I don't want to cut all these rafters in the air to straighten them. It's a little off. It's not plumb like I wanted IT TO BE.
YEAH, I THINK THIS IS GOING TO WORK.
Some of these I've had to get creative with because you see this gap? Look, I can fit my >> [laughter] >> my whole finger on there. I can't screw that with that gap, and it's like so tight. I can't even like push it.
Uh so, I have to like I have to add a screw here, and I'm going to have to clamp it so I can screw it in place.
Maybe.
Uh Nope.
>> [gasps] >> The No, it bent the screw.
Well, I can't use that one.
It is still bending the screw.
Uh No, that's still not good enough.
It's like a huge gap, man.
What if I You know what? I have an idea.
Let me get a longer clamp. I'm going to clamp it from here.
Dude, this board doesn't want to I wonder Maybe this is I wonder if this is just that much shorter.
Dude, [music] the sun is like right there.
It gets so hot at this time of the day, and it's so hard to work because this sun is right on the spot where I'm working. I pretty much wasted the day with this board. I It's It's so bad. All of the rafters None of them are even. None of them. I started to shim them because it wasn't too bad, but then it was pretty clear that it that it was bad. There's just gaps everywhere. So, I think I'm going to take this board off and cut all the rafters in the air, which I didn't want to do, but I need to straighten up this boards because I I can't I can't install it like this. And I am just tired of fighting with it.
>> That is nice looking roof.
>> I'm trying to put this trim piece, it's like the fascia, all the way around.
>> Yeah.
>> But it goes against the rafters [music] here.
And they're all crooked. Like I mean I tried to cut them straight but didn't work out.
>> how they're all crooked.
That's the way life goes.
>> Yep.
Apparently.
What is holding this?
>> In your hand.
>> There you go.
>> Okay.
>> Put it on the ladder. I'm going to take it down completely. [music] >> okay.
>> Yeah.
>> Got it?
>> Yep.
Thank you.
It better be straight. [music] It was good enough. So I cut the rest.
>> [sighs] >> All I need is this one screw in and this doesn't fall on my head.
That'll be level now.
>> [music] >> Yeah, you better.
I wish God would have made me a little bit taller.
Up.
There you go.
Now that I know what I'm doing, well, I think I know what I'm doing, the next one shouldn't be this hard.
But this was a pain.
I should have checked the rafters to make sure they were straight before I put the trim in. That was a big mistake. I just thought I could make it work.
Uh but no.
So, I still got to cut the rafters like the other half and put a board just like I did here. And then I have to do the sides.
Can you help me hold the board that I need to put up there?
No.
What if I give you cookies?
Hold it for me.
I basically want like half of the board sticking out.
>> Oh, I see.
>> All right. and then I need you to hold it in place. I'm going to put it where it goes here.
But I need you to hold it in place so it doesn't fall, okay?
>> Even with some help, the adjusting took forever.
>> You see this?
All this has to be flushed. Has to be flushed with this, and these two pieces has to be flushed also. And that's what I'm fighting with.
Yeah, this one.
Okay, I'm going to give you the hammer.
And I need you to hammer Ah, >> What?
>> I cut this piece wrong.
>> This whole board?
>> This whole board is wrong. I was supposed to uh cut it past the edge, and I forgot to add it when I took my measurements. I was supposed to add 11 in to it.
>> Okay, so we have to take this board down?
>> We have to take this board down.
>> I should have asked for more cookies.
>> I'll buy you more cookies and Reese's.
And whatever you want.
I'm going to bear this here, and we going to try this again.
>> That extra cookie is rapidly turning into pizza, my dear.
>> If you want pizza, I will get you pizza.
>> I want pizza.
>> Whatever you want.
>> I want a giant sloppy pizza full of all the meats.
>> Okay.
>> And extra cheese, and that uh that new sliced sauce that they they invented.
>> Why is this not >> bites.
>> Yes.
>> With marinara sauce.
>> I hate when boards are not the same size. The other thing with pressure treated wood is like it's not always the same size.
>> You know what else is never the same size?
>> What?
>> Pizza.
They can try to get it close, but when you hand stretch the dough, it's never the same size.
>> No.
Are those the wrong screws?
>> No, it's just the way I cut this.
I don't have a way to screw it together.
Be Be right back. I need to get an L bracket.
Sorry, [snorts] give me a sec.
>> Sour cream and onion dip.
>> Okay.
Dummy, what else do I need?
A bit.
Because of how I cut this, I did a miter cut and I don't know, it's just hard to screw it from the front and actually have any support, so [snorts] I'm doing it from the back with L brackets, but I'm going to get the proper L brackets later and switch them. This is not structural, so I'm not too worried about it, just more for the looks.
>> We'll get the L brackets when we get the pizza.
>> Yes, that sounds like a plan.
>> And wings.
>> Ew.
>> Spit water on me.
>> Ew.
>> Yeah.
>> Who knows where that water came from?
That's disgusting.
>> That's probably just chemicals.
>> Just chemicals.
>> Yeah. Okay, let go. You can go. Thank you so much for your help.
>> Thank you for getting me pizza.
>> I will get you pizza, whatever you want.
>> I want pizza, buffalo wings, sour cream and onion dip, and uh Oh, I don't know.
Oh, parmesan bites and a small cake to go with my cookies.
I'm hungry.
>> Okay.
Oh, I got to put those screws back over there. But yeah, I'm done with the front now. I got to figure out the sides.
Are you happy now?
I'm not [music] unhappy.
You see the board sticking out up there?
I now have to put a another another board from back to the front and connect them so that there's like an outer trim all around the roof. So I have to do the same thing on the other side and that would make the fascia.
>> [snorts] >> Now I have something to hold the board on this side.
Oreo.
Oh, hello you pretty girl.
I haven't seen you in a while.
And there's milkshake.
Oreo.
Oreo.
Nah, she don't care today.
>> [laughter] >> I clamped these uh things here to hold this temporarily for me.
So that's there temporarily. I have to mark it on the other side so I can get the angle cut that I need to do on the other side so that is flush with the wood.
I just wish I was a couple inches taller.
Maybe five.
I forgot to record the cut. But I just cut it.
This is still heavy. How did I do this the first time?
I am pretty proud of ourselves.
We made it this far.
And it looks really good. Like this structure, man. This this this solid.
>> [laughter] >> If a hurricane comes, I don't think this is going anywhere.
I'm nervous about the next part, which is the roof. And I have to do that all by myself.
Maybe I'll convince Tony to help me.
We'll see. Thank you everyone for joining me while I push my boundaries cuz I've never done anything like this before.
And thank you patrons and members for your support. I'll see you all in the next video.
