This esoteric reinterpretation pushes the boundaries of traditional monotheism by blurring the lines between the divine and the Ahl al-Bayt. While intellectually provocative, it replaces historical complexity with a highly sectarian mystical narrative.

The Mystery of the Salawat: Does God Pray Upon Muhammad? - سر الصلوات: كيف يصلى الله على محمد (ﷺ)Added:
I seek refuge with Allah from this accursed Shaitan.
In the name of Allah, the one, the conqueror.
And all praises is due to Allah alone, Lord of the worlds.
Walhamdulillahirabbil alameen.
And may he send his prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the Imams and the Mahdis.
Now, oftentimes the salawat which is sallallahu ala Muhammadin wa ali Muhammad is often translated as may Allah send his blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, peace be upon them.
But that is not actually an accurate translation of what is being said. Did you know that? A more accurate and literal translation of the salawat reads as such.
Sallallahu means Allah has prayed, not Allah has blessed. It means Allah has prayed.
Ala Muhammadin wa ali Muhammad, upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.
Now, this salawat is an essential matter. It's actually extremely important because Muslims recite it in their five daily prayers. Every day when they pray, and the Shia would always hold this against the Sunnis.
The Muslims all around the world, they would say, "Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ali Muhammad kama sallaita ala Ibrahim wa ala ali Ibrahim. Oh Allah, send your blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad in the same way that you sent your blessings upon Abraham and the family of Abraham." But, the actual translation of it is, "Oh God, pray upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as you prayed upon Abraham and the family of Abraham."
It's also, this salawat is connected to a verse in the Quran in which we are commanded to pray upon the prophet.
Inna allaha wa mala'ikatahu yusalluna ala al-nabi. Ya ayyuhalladhina amanu, sallu alayhi wa sallimu taslima.
Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the prophet. This is the official translation, right? That you'll find in in Quran in English translations of the Quran.
Allah confers blessing upon the prophet, and his angels ask him to do [music] so.
O you who have believed, ask Allah to confer blessing upon him, and ask Allah to grant him peace. Except that this translation is false. It's wrong. It's incorrect. A more accurate translation would read, "Indeed, Allah and his angels pray upon the prophet.
O you who believe, pray upon him and grant true submission."
Scholars throughout time struggled, though, to understand this verse, and asked the questions that probably came to your mind, as well.
How can God pray?
God does not pray, does he?
We're ones that pray to God.
How is God praying upon the prophet?
What does that even mean?
Muslims understood this verse also to be a divine command that whenever one hears the name of Muhammad, one should automatically say the salawat as we were clearly commanded to do in the verse.
But in reality, the meaning of the salawat was much deeper and much more important [music] than most people perceived.
And tied within the salawat [music] are secrets upon secrets.
When my grandfather, Muhammad al-Mustafa, sallallahu alayhi, was on his deathbed, he said to his Shia and family members who were present, >> [music] >> he said, "Ya Abu al-Hasan, my soul is flowing forth into the hands of my Lord."
That's what he said. So, in the moment of Muhammad's death, he said, "Oh Abu al-Hasan, my soul is flowing forth or myself is flowing forth into the hand of my Lord.
When I have completed my turn, meaning when I have passed away, prepare me and place me facing the Kaaba.
The first to pray over me will be my Lord and his angels." So, that that's an incredible narration.
Here the prophet is getting giving last instructions. He's feeling He's feeling his soul leaving his body, but he's still talking. And his final instructions is that when his soul leaves his body, that he's his body's prepared, meaning washed, and then it's placed facing the Kaaba. And then he says that the very first person to pray over him will be his Lord and his angels, thus fulfilling the verse in the Quran, "Verily, Allah and His angels pray upon the prophet. Oh, you who believe, pray upon him and grant a true submission."
And so, when he passed, while the rest of the people were in the Saqifah of Bani Sa'ada, conspiring over who would usurp the caliphate and the successorship of the prophet, Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, alayhis salaam, washed the prophet as he instructed them to. He prepared his body as he instructed him to. And Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, along with a small group of Shia, prayed over him and held his funeral.
And so, when Imam Ali, alayhis salaam, called the people and made the adhan for the people to pray upon the prophet, it became a fulfillment of the verse, and that is the true meaning of the verse.
"Indeed, Allah and His angels pray upon the prophet. Oh, you who believe, pray upon him and grant true submission."
For Allah, the Allah who prayed upon the prophet was Ali al-A'la, was Ali, the high. And the angels who prayed upon the prophet who were none other than the Shia of the Ahlul Bayt alayhis salaam.
Those who remained by the side of Allah and remained occupied with prayer upon the prophet during that hour of tragedy, unlike the rest of the Muslims.
And it is at hours and times like this, hours of tragedy, hours of apparent weakness and need, hours of trials and tribulations, that Allah makes clear the difference between the Shia and the Shayatin, the angels and the demons.
Imam al-Sadiq alayhis salaam in another narration said, "The believers are human in their structure, but their souls are made of light.
The disbelievers are human in their structure, but their souls are Shayatin."
This is what Imam al-Sadiq alayhis salaam said.
So, the disbelievers, they appear as humans, but their souls are actually Shayatin. And thus, the Imam al-Sadiq alayhis salaam confirmed that the believers are angels or like angels, while the disbelievers are the literal devils.
Both identities are concealed and hidden behind the appearance of a human being.
And it is during times of trials and tribulations, times of fitna, like this one, that God reveals who is who, as he did at the time of the passing of Muhammad al-Mustafa.
The angels, they with Allah praying upon Muhammad while the devils plotted and remained preoccupied with the dunya.
But this reality of Allah who prayed upon his messenger is a difficult one.
Extremely difficult for people to grasp.
None could handle it except for a prophet messenger, a close angel, or a believer whose heart Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tested for faith.
That means that even the prophets, if you think about it, even the prophets, they differed regarding the matter of Ali ibn Abi Talib alayhis salaam.
And it is actually cited as one of the reasons in the Hadith of the Ahlul Bayt alayhim us salaam why Yunus alayhis salaam was swallowed by the whale because he doubted in the wilaya and the godhood of Ali.
Even the angels actually, in the heavens above, also differed and differ regarding the matter of Ali ibn Abi Talib.
Now, here's a very precious, rare gem for you. Listen to this narration.
In one narration, it is stated Salman al-Miqdad and Abu Dharr, they all returned to the house of our master, Amir al-Mu'minin, alayhis salaam, in Medina, to seek permission to enter upon him. So, Salman, Miqdad, and Abu Dharr go to the house of Imam Ali.
Then Fidda, peace be upon Fidda.
I love Fidda very much. Fidda, peace be upon her, she emerged from the house of Amir al-Mu'minin and she spoke to Salman, Miqdad, and Abu Dharr. And she said, "My mistress, Fatima, alayhis salam, says to you, 'Imam Ali is not here. He has ascended to the heavens and he is amongst its towers, judging and decreeing amongst his servants.'"
Then Salman, al-Miqdad, and Abu Dharr sat at the door awaiting for Amir al-Mu'minin, alayhis salam. While they were seated, they saw the angels descending in groups and processions.
And there was Amir al-Mu'minin, alayhis salam, descending with them in the clouds.
[music] But Amir al-Mu'minin had with him Zulfiqar.
>> [music] >> And Zulfiqar was in his hand, his sword, and it was dripping blood.
He descended from the clouds and he entered the house. They sought permission afterwards to also enter the house and he permitted them.
So they entered and then they fell into sujud.
Salman said, "Oh my master, what is this blood that is dripping from Zulfiqar?"
Now listen, listen, believers, to the response of Amir al-Mu'minin, alayhis salam.
Amir al-Mu'minin, alayhis salam, replied, "Groups [music] of angels denied, they differed, and they [music] disputed regarding me. And so I purified them in the high stations and came back down." Meaning he purified them of those who disbelieved.
He cut off the necks of those angels. He cut off the wings of those angels.
Then Salman looked to al-Miqdad and said, he recited the verse from the Quran, say oh Allah "Fater as-samawati wal-ard, the originator of the heavens and the earth, knower of the unseen and the seen, you judge between your servants concerning that wherein they differed."
And of course, [music] the believers too will differ.
And the people will differ [music] regarding the reality and the station of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad alayhis salaam.
The station of Ali ibn Abi Talib and the Imams from his sons.
And so they too, like the angels, will be tested, they will be tried, they will be sifted, they will be purified in the time of the Qa'im until there remains none except for the loyal, pure angel, the firm prophet, messenger, and the tested believer. Alayhim as-salaam.
The true believers, upon whom be God's mercy and peace, know though that God is not invisible and that God is to be found through a man.
All right, now I want you guys to pay real close attention to the following narration because it has some very heavy truths.
Al-Mufaddal ibn Umar alayhis salaam said, "I was walking with my master Imam as-Sadiq alayhis salaam through some of the roads of al-Medina when suddenly a Bedouin was slaughtering a sheep.
The Bedouin that was slaughtering sheep, he was saying, "Subhanallah, glory be to the one who concealed himself from his creation, so no eye can see him."
Yani, subhanallah about how God has made himself invisible from all eyes.
Imam as-Sadiq, alayhis salam, rebuked the Bedouin, and he said to him, "Allah did not veil himself from his creation, rather due to the darkness and the impurities within them, they veiled themselves from him.
So, whenever he wills, he causes himself to be known to whomever he wills, however he wills."
Al-Mufaddal ibn Umar, alayhis salam, also said, "I was another day walking with my master, as-Sadiq, alayhis salam, through some of the roads of al-Medina, when suddenly there was a man stretching his hands towards the sky while supplicating. You know how the Muslims do when they raise their hands and they make dua?
Al-Mufaddal was walking with Imam as-Sadiq, and they passed by a man. The man has his hands facing the heavens, he's making dua.
Imam as-Sadiq, alayhis salam, sees that man and he says, 'Oh, Mufaddal, do you see the man raising his gaze towards the air?'
>> [music] >> Had he deserved the vision from Allah, he would have seen him.
And in another narration, he says, 'Oh, Mufaddal, do you see this man raising his hands worshipping the air?'
Had he deserved the vision from Allah, meaning had he deserved to see Allah, he would have indeed [music] seen him.
So, Imam Ahmad al-Hassan is essentially criticizing these people that raise their arms towards the heavens thinking that Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala is above and ignoring the Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala which is present.
So, God is always present amongst creation in every day and age.
And those who are deserving and those who purify themselves will always be able to see him.
And that is why Imam Ahmad al-Hassan alayhis salam once said, "There is no age and there's no day in which Ali ibn Abi Talib alayhis salam is not present."
And this is the Sunnah of Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala in which there is no doubt.
And the proof of it is in the scriptures [music] of those who came before.
And if you don't believe me, ask [music] the Christians and they will tell you that in the Gospels it actually says, "Now that same day," in the Gospel of Luke it says, "Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about 7 miles from Jerusalem. Two of the disciples, Cleopas and his wife.
They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
As they talked and discussed [music] these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them, but they were kept [music] from recognizing him."
So, see? You have there God in creation is present. Jesus walks up on them, but they were kept from recognizing him because they had doubts.
They were impure.
He asked them, the gospel says, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?"
>> [music] >> They stood still, their faces downcast.
One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened here in these days?" "What things?" he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," [music] they replied.
"He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.
The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him.
But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel." See, just because just because Jesus was arrested, just because he was killed, these people they they doubted.
So, their faith was incomplete.
And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning, but did not find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus."
He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken.
Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?
And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning himself.
As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if were going further.
But they urged him strongly saying, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening.
The day is almost over." So, he went in to stay with them.
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, >> [music] >> broke it, and began to give it to them. It was then that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the scriptures to us?"
They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the 11 and those with them assembled together and saying, "It is true, the Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon." Then the two told them what had happened on the way and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
So, what do we learn from this story?
That because they were in doubt, their eyes were closed and they did not recognize Jesus.
But when they actually believed after he taught them the scripture, their eyes were opened and suddenly they recognized his presence.
Impurities, disbelief, and darkness blind the sight.
Just like Imam Sadiq and the Ahl al-Bayt and Imam Sadiq said, "But God is actually always there."
>> [music] >> In one particular mystical narration, Maytham al-Tammar narrates. He says, "One day, I presented a need of mine to my master, Amir al-Mu'minin alayhis salaam.
So, I came to the door, and I asked permission.
He gave me permission, so I entered.
I found him sitting on a wooden chair."
So, Maytham al-Tammar enters the house of Amir al-Mu'minin. He sees Amir al-Mu'minin is sitting on a wooden chair. Before him is a table, and there was some food on the table.
Al-Husayn was on the right of Imam Ali, and Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah and Safinah were on his left.
Safinah is one of the companions, and Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah is one of the sons of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali ibn Abi Talib.
Imam Ali gestured with his hand for me to sit.
So, I sat between Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah and Safinah, and I ate from that food.
Then, my soul began whispering something of [music] doubt to me. Maytham al-Tammar, one of the most one of the most loyal, closest companions, he he's confessing in this narration. He says, "I Imam Ali invites me to eat food with him and al-Husayn and the companion.
And then, I start having these doubts.
>> [music] >> I said to myself, 'Well, we eat, and he eats.
We drink, and he drinks.
We marry, and he marries. We sleep, and he sleeps. We defecate, and he defecates. We urinate, and he urinates.
And we die, and he dies. So, what is the difference [music] between us?'
At that moment, Imam Ali alayhis salaam looked towards me, Maytham al-Tammar says, from the side of his face, >> [music] >> and I knew that he had become aware of what was in my secret thought.
So, I was overtaken by dread, awe, majesty, >> [music] >> and shame at what had occurred in my secret thought. He knew that Imam Ali read his thoughts.
Then I raised my head to look at him, and suddenly I saw him he was upon a throne of gold.
Upon him were garments like green silk.
Upon his head was a crown of pearls and jewels.
And in his hand was a rod of red sapphire.
The people of paradise were living in paradise, and the people of fire were in the fire.
And Imam Ali alayhis salam said to [music] me, "Oh, Maytham, you eat and we eat. [music] You drink and we drink.
Indeed, you marry and we marry.
>> [music] >> You defecate and we defecate. You urinate and we urinate. You die and we die. But, what difference is there between us?"
Maytham al-Tammar said, "Oh, my master, you are you. There is no god but you."
He said, "Yes, I am I."
Then he recited the the verse from the Holy Quran, "Indeed, I am Allah.
There is no god except for me. La ilaha illa ana. So, worship me and establish prayer for my remembrance."
Maytham said, "When I had eaten, I went out with Safinah.
when I came outside the house I said to Safina oh Safina did you see what I saw of my master Safina said I saw only one who is eating so I kept quiet and went forth in my needs. And that's a fascinating narration for more than one reason not only is it revelatory in nature because Imam Ali alayhis salaam reveals the fact of who he is who his essence is.
But it's also interesting to know that there we have a precedent that you have companions that are on different levels and they're interacting with the same person one is seeing the Imam just eating while the other is seeing the Imam have an entire conversation with him.
And that makes you wonder.
About.
Our own interactions with the Imam.
If we're seeing the whole truth or if we're being veiled from realities because of our own impurities and our own doubts.
In another narration fascinating narration from Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq. He said minhu salaam.
Now listen to the words of Imam al-Sadiq alayhis salaam.
Imam al-Sadiq alayhis salaam says whoever claims that he has a lord that cannot be seen.
Has denied him.
And has no lord at all.
Whoever claims that he has a lord that cannot be seen has denied that lord and has no lord at all.
>> [music] >> And whoever claims that he has a god that cannot be known such a person is from the party of Iblis, la'natullah alayh.
Then he said, "Whoever desires Allah, whoever from you who wants Allah who is present in his creation, that one who neither has an opposite nor an equal, then I am he."
And in another narration, Abu Ja'far, Imam al-Baqir, alayhis salaam, said, "Indeed, Allah is manifest. Allah is zaahir."
So I said, "Subhanallah, praise be to Allah who did not cause himself to be absent from us."
>> [music] >> So he said to me, "And did you know" Imam al-Baqir says to his companion, "And did you know that he did not conceal himself from you?" The companion said, "Yes, my master." Imam al-Baqir said, "Then who is Allah?"
The companion said, "You."
He said, "Mercy be upon you."
And so, my fellow believing brothers and sisters, it is as Imam al-Ridha, alayhis salaam, said, "We praise Allah for having paved the way for Islam and for making it easy for those who thirst for its truth to reach its abundant springs.
Its foundations were made firm and its structure [music] steadfast so that none could challenge or overcome it or overcome this speech of mine.
Oh, brothers and sisters, know that the path of our religion is one and it is straight >> [music] >> and it is short.
Whoever amongst you follows it will reach the eternal home and reap its rewards.
But whoever does not follow it is surely astray and will inevitably regret it.
Listen to me and know that the doors of divine wisdom are opened through us, the Ahlul Bayt.
And the light of religion has shown thanks to the guidance of our forefathers.
Seek help from Allah and never neglect the remembrance of his name, glorified and exalted.
>> [music] >> For I have heard from my father, from his forefathers, >> [music] >> that my grandfather, Ali, alayhis al-Mustafa, alayhis salaam, [music] who said, "One day Gabriel whispered into his blessed ear that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala had said to him, >> [music] >> 'There is no god but Allah is my mighty fortress [music] and whoever enters into my mighty fortress is safe from my punishment.'
But dear brothers, entering into this fortress comes with conditions.
Foremost amongst them is acknowledging the wilaya of the Ahlul Bayt.
And so my people, our religion is a man and that man is monotheism.
The point of creation is to know that man, recognize that man, follow that man, and support that man for that man is the king of kings.
And the Prophet Muhammad did not leave this world without clarifying to us who this man would be from the day of his death, the death of the prophet, until this very day of ours.
And on the Thursday before his passing, he told the Muslims to bring him a paper and a pen.
And he would write down that which if they held on to it, they would never go astray.
And so he added to it a divine promise, a guarantee that if they simply followed this will, they would be saved. But the Muslims rejected it and refused to give him that paper or that pen.
But even then, on the day he passed away, he still dictated his will to Ali.
And in his will, he wrote down the names of his successors, listing first the name of the 12 Imams and then [music] ending it by naming the first of the three Mahdis.
He said the Imams are Ali ibn Abi Talib, al-Hasan al-Husayn, the martyr, Ali Zayn Muhammad al-Baqir, Ja'far al-Sadiq, Musa al-Kazim, Ali al-Rida, Muhammad al-Jawad, Ali al-Hadi, al-Hasan al-Askari, and Muhammad al-Mahdi.
Then he said, "The Mahdis are Abdullah, Ahmad, and the third is al-Mahdi."
And so none are left without a way, and none are left with an excuse to say that they did not know how, when, or who.
And it is this that frightens the world and makes them hate us.
The devils, the shayatin, hate their lord and seek [music] to kill him in every day and age, just as they killed al-Husayn and the Imams. Just as they killed the prophets and the messengers.
It is because the companions of the will have authority and legitimacy, and their names have been preserved in the will of the most honorable of creation.
It is because they call towards the authority of God alone.
The idea that only God can appoint the ruler. This is a system which cannot be infiltrated or manipulated.
It is a divinely protected system that leads to God himself ruling upon the earth.
The Imams from the Ahl al-Bayt, alayhim as-salam, gave up their lives for two things.
The will of Muhammad and the idea that only God can appoint the ruler, which collectively can be summarized as the wilaya of Ali Muhammad, alayhim as-salam.
It is for the wilaya of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad that I too have given my life.
Together, we will overcome this because we have God with [music] us.
And we are his people.
We are the only ones on the planet that want his choice as leader.
We are the only ones on the planet that hold on to his will.
We are the only ones on the planet that have [music] an active covenant with him.
And we are the only ones in this world that recognize God and [music] that sees God visibly and speaks to him and know who he is.
And I am his messenger, Abdullah.
And nothing will stand between us and between Allah.
And as-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
