16 Years as a Buddhist Monk — His Journey Will Inspire You | Bhikkhu Pannakara |Walk For PeaceAdded:
What would happen if one day you chose to leave everything behind? No wealth, no possessions, no personal ambitions, just a single vow.
A vow to dedicate your entire life to peace.
For most people, such a commitment seems impossible.
Yet 16 years ago, on a sacred Vesak full moon day, one man made that choice.
And 16 years later, his journey continues to inspire thousands around the world.
This is the story of Venerable Bhikkhu Panyacara.
A story of devotion, sacrifice, mindfulness, and an unwavering commitment to peace.
Today is May 31st, 2026, the sacred Vesak full moon day, the most revered day in the Buddhist calendar, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana of the Buddha. For Buddhists around the world, Vesak is a day of reflection and gratitude, but this Vesak carries a special significance. Today marks exactly 16 years since Venerable Bhikkhu Panyacara entered the monastic life. 16 years of walking a path few choose. 16 years of serving others. 16 years of carrying a message that the world desperately needs. A message of peace.
On May 28th, 2010, during the sacred Vesak full moon, Bhikkhu Panyacara took ordination as a Buddhist monk. It was not merely a ceremony, it was a profound transformation.
A conscious decision to dedicate his entire life to mindfulness, compassion, wisdom, and selfless service to all living beings.
Many people dream of changing the world.
Few begin by changing themselves. The Buddha taught that true peace begins within. And so began a journey not measured by wealth, status, or recognition, but by inner cultivation and service to humanity.
Year after year, step after step, the vow remained unbroken.
As the years passed, Bhikkhu Paññācara became known for something extraordinary. He walked not for adventure, not for fame, but for peace across sacred lands, across countries, across cultures, through heat, rain, uncertainty, and countless miles. His footsteps became a living meditation, each step carrying a message, peace is possible, compassion is possible, understanding is possible. From the sacred Buddhist sites of India and Nepal to communities around the world, he carried this message with humility and determination.
His journey demonstrated a simple but powerful truth.
Peace is not something we wait for.
Peace is something we practice.
One step at a time.
Then came another remarkable milestone.
On May 15th, 2022, once again during the Vesak full moon period, a historic vision was shared publicly for the first time.
The Dāmacetiya Ancient Sacred Buddhist Scriptures Stupas Project.
This was far more than a construction project. It was a vision for preserving the timeless teachings of the Buddha for future generations.
For over 2,500 years, the Buddha's teachings have guided countless people toward wisdom, compassion, and liberation. The Dāmacetiya Project seeks to safeguard that heritage, to create a sanctuary of peace, a place where future generations can connect with the Dhamma and reflect upon the timeless path shown by the Buddha.
It was another beginning, another seed planted for the benefit of many.
Two years later, another milestone emerged.
On May 22nd, 2024, the book Buoc Chan Han Gia, The Footsteps of a Buddhist Monk, was officially released. The book chronicles sacred journeys through India and Nepal between 2022 and 2023, but it is more than a travel journal. It is a reflection on mindfulness, on perseverance, on seeing the world through the eyes of a practitioner walking the Buddhist path. Through its pages, readers are invited to walk alongside the monk, to witness the sacred places of Buddhism, to contemplate deeper questions about life, suffering, and inner peace.
And perhaps most importantly, to discover that every journey begins with a single step.
There is something remarkable about these milestones. The ordination in 2010, the announcement of Dang Met Say Ti in 2022, the release of the book in 2024, three beautiful beginnings separated by years, yet all unfolding on the same sacred day of the lunar calendar, the Vesak full moon day, a powerful reminder that some moments are more than coincidence. They become symbols, symbols of dedication, symbols of continuity, symbols of a life aligned with purpose. The impact of Bhikkhu Panyagara's journey extends far beyond one country. His peace walks have reached communities across the world, from Asia to North America, from ancient pilgrimage routes to modern cities, from quiet village rooms to international institutions. His journey has brought the message of peace to the United Nations in New York, to Parliament and Canada, and to countless individuals searching for hope and meaning in [music] a rapidly changing world. Yet, despite these achievements, the message remains simple.
>> Peace begins in the heart. Compassion begins in the heart. Transformation begins in the heart.
As we celebrate this Vesak full moon day, we also celebrate 16 years of unwavering devotion, 16 years of walking, 16 years of serving, 16 years of inspiring others through action rather than words.
In a world often divided by conflict and uncertainty, the life of Venerable Bhikkhu Panyacara reminds us of something profoundly important. Peace is not merely a destination, it is a way of walking, a way of living, a way of meeting each moment with wisdom, mindfulness, and compassion. On this sacred day, we express our deepest gratitude for his dedication and service. May his journey continue to inspire countless others. May the light of peace continue to spread throughout the world, and may all beings be well.
May all beings be happy. May all beings live in peace. Sadhu. Sadhu. Sadhu.
