Spanish fan football culture is severely underrated. And if you caught any of our latest series of Derby Days, you know that Barcelona and Real Madrid have nothing on some of the incredible fan bases in the other regions of Spain. It's in these smaller regions and cities where the identity of the people are even more aligned with their club than any major team in [music] >> actually underrated. Madrid is a place in Spain. And you know they have Real Madrid.
Meaning Real Madrid belongs to Spain.
>> like the the Real Madrid like It's a Spanish club.
>> Ooh, Madrid is a city in Spain that have a club called Real Madrid.
>> [laughter] >> The thing is that I've really not seen like many hype about Spain football. I know more of No, I know about the Spanish league. I'm very much aware of the Spanish league, yeah.
>> Oh, really?
>> Yeah. Okay, I'm clueless. She's clueless.
And by the way, I'm Arsenal fan. Uh, what about >> [laughter] >> Spain, creating some of the best atmospheres >> This turns out to be good.
Yeah.
This is an I'm sure. Best supporter groups in Spain.
Cadiz CF I've never seen a fan base like that. Really? They've spent only 12 of their 108-year history in the first division. That said, what makes Cadiz truly special are its fans. Of course.
The Brigadas Amarillas are a traditionally left-wing group which shine in the center of their emblem. The atmosphere they bring to the ground is renowned in terraces across the world.
Wow.
Alaves. Alaves didn't always have a spectacular [music] atmosphere, but after being relegated in 2003 and again in 2008, the fans established Iraultza 1921 and since then nothing has been the same. Wow. Alaves is one of the four best teams in the first division. That said, the Alaves sister are widely regarded as the most passionate [music] fans The fans are wild.
>> they come around last season What is going on?
>> [laughter] >> The energy is so much.
>> Sevilla. Many fans in Spain sympathize with Sevilla as they don't have the traditional dominance They look like bunnies like bunnies. but they still win European titles. [music] The choreography is an atmosphere that looks like a little fire that's moving.
Really, the the beauty of football is in in fans. Yeah. If there are no fans, there's no football.
>> [laughter] >> How incredible. Regardless of whether it's at a derby, a match against the big three, or a midweek European match. Ooh.
They look like they're wearing red and white.
Yeah.
This makes for some spine-tingling scenes, the likes of which can rival you'll never walk alone at Anfield. And their supporters group, Biris Norte, are the oldest ultras group in Spain and have played in the same northern stand since 1975.
They're traditionally left-wing and have a long-standing friendship with their golfing counterparts, Deportivo La Coruña.
Atletico Madrid. Atletico Madrid are the third team in Spain when it comes to titles and numbers of fans, but compared to Barca and Real, their atmosphere is far superior. They have a loud and passionate following that for a [music] century turned the Calderon into the most passionate stadium in Spain.
And now they're doing the same thing with their new Wanda Metropolitano stadium. Wow.
>> Using innovative chants and tifos, their ultras plant Atletico Ooh. Wow. Wow, look at these guys. They're crazy.
Making a team [music] for the Rock of Gibraltar with the words Gibraltar is Spanish. The philosophy of trolismo and the fighting spirit has been embraced by the fans.
The modest club despite their recent success.
Real Betis Balompié.
Andalusia is the warmest region in Spain [music] and it's no coincidence that the fans from both sides of their capital city derby have made this list.
Sevilla's recent string of successes in the UEFA Cup surprisingly led to an increase in supporters for Betis.
Beticos are known for being absolutely mad whether it be a woman in her 90s or a 10-year-old >> [laughter] [screaming] >> This year [laughter] the southern curve of Estadio Benito Villamarín was renovated giving their ultras, supporters Gol Sur, a new home. They even won Panenka Supporter of the Year award last season for their 110-year anniversary choreo.
Real Oviedo. Real Oviedo have only played two European Cup matches in their 92-year history. Yet despite this, they are a club that almost went bankrupt in 2012 after financial mismanagement had the club on the brink of collapse. A massive crowdfunding campaign supported by football fans, players and the world's richest man saved the club from collapse. Now Real Oviedo are in the second division and the majority owners are the fans with a 41% stake in the club.
Athletic Club Bilbao. Athletic Club Bilbao are truly distinct football team.
A club who in the modern era only plays with players born within their region.
This elicits a particular connection between fans and the club that almost no other team in the world has. Their ultras, Herri Norte, sing their chants in Basque and one of the most distinct experiences at the San Mamés on a Copa del Rey night is where the supporters refuse to sing the Spanish anthem, and sing their own Basque nice. Yeah.
Rayo Vallecano. Located in the south of the Spanish capital, Rayo are home to the working class neighborhood of Vallecas. Living in the shadow of the giants of this >> [laughter] >> city, Real and Atletico Madrid, this is a fitting status for this underdog club, whose fans prioritize the working class struggles in their community over the success of their team. The ultras are called the Bukaneros, or buccaneers, taking inspiration from pirates, a constant heading for Spain's king in the time of the Armadas.
>> Is that that club you are talking about?
They have fan friendships with far left clubs across Europe, including St. Pauli and Celtic.
Osasuna. Osasuna is renowned for their atmosphere at home games, particularly when they play a big club. Many of their supporters have sympathy for the Basque culture, despite not being in the Basque Country. Their city hosts the famous bull fighting festivities, Wow, that's a cool festival.
Like, in this festival, you wear color red, and then the bull chases It's like you'll be in the arena. It looks like a Should I call it arena, but it's a road.
People will be by the side with barricades. So, they let the bull out, and then you guys start running. Oh, wow.
>> Yeah. That's That's not dangerous?
Highly dangerous. Like, you can't Because if the bull gets to you, that's all. That's final. Some people lose their lives, but to them it's fun. But, to others like us, we don't see the need. Risky fun. It's very risky.
Osasuna fans have been through many ups and downs in the past few years, and yet their incredible support has remained consistent.
Sporting Gijon. Gijon is a town in the northern coast of Spain.
>> [laughter] >> Their fans are called La Mareona, or the red tidal wave. Not only do they have a reputation of having the greatest in numbers, and they show a huge rivalry with the fans of the other main team in Asturias, Real Oviedo.
That is Copa 90's top 10 best supporter groups in Spain. Wow. Top 10. Was there a group we missed? Let us know in the comment section.
>> I don't know. I don't know.
Is there a group he missed? Let us know in the comment section. Wow, the atmosphere is giving. It's giving. Starting with Real Madrid down to the tenth, all have, you know, very nice energy that and fun.
Restaurants. Especially the one that the fans had to revive the the club. They said it was actually a very wealthy man that had to revive the club. No, I thought the fans had to like, you know, donate to revive the club.
Because the club is managed with their money. Like these guys go far to the extreme to, you know, support. And most of them are ranking 90, 80 years, 100 years.
There was one he said was founded in 1921. My God. That was That was a very long time ago. Yeah. This really tells us that if there's no fan, there's no club. Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> Until next time, guys. We're waiting for you on the comment section. Let us know what club you support, what club is missing, and I'll be waiting for you right there. See you next time. And don't forget I'm Asqnu.
