This transition from mechanical replacement to biological regeneration marks the end of the "spare parts" era in medicine. It is a sophisticated shift toward treating the human body as a self-healing organism rather than a depreciating machine.

How Joint Replacement Is Changing #shortsAdded:
What if we could print a new knee that can actually heal itself? Hi, I'm Doctor Nadine Chahine, professor of biomedical engineering in orthopedic surgery at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. I'm Clark Hung, professor of biomedical engineering and professor of orthopedic sciences and orthopedic surgery at Columbia University.
We're working on a new type of knee implant, basically called a living knee. Right now, over 800,000 people get knee replacements every year, but those implants only last 15 to 20 years.
When you're younger and in pain, it often means you have to live with the pain for many more years. Columbia University, with funding support from the U.S. Federal Government Advanced Research Program Agency for Health, or ARPA-H is trying to change that. Instead of metal and plastic, this implant is made of a biodegradable scaffold filled with stem cells.
Once implanted, it's designed to basically regenerate new bone and cartilage and then slowly dissolve. The goal for us is to actually make an implant that's going to be able to integrate with the body and last an entire lifetime. It's called NovaKnee. And while it's still in development, we hope to be able to test it in clinical trials in about two years.
It could change who gets relief and when.
