Kodokushi (lonely death) is a social phenomenon in Japan where individuals die alone and remain undiscovered for extended periods, typically weeks, due to extreme social isolation. This issue has become increasingly prevalent in Japan's aging society, with approximately 77,000 cases recorded in 2025. The phenomenon is discovered through indirect means such as unpaid bills, strange smells, or landlords finally gaining access to the property. This highlights a critical social challenge where even in one of the world's safest countries, individuals face the danger of being forgotten rather than physical harm.
