The transformation of late-night satire into a predictable partisan echo chamber has traded broad cultural relevance for narrow ideological signaling. This financial decline suggests that when comedy prioritizes preaching over punchlines, it loses both its audience and its economic foundation.

‘Colbert blames Donald Trump for everything’: Finnerty slams outgoing late-night hostAdded:
Tonight we are marking the end of an era. The end of the line as part of the mainstream legacy media dies on the vine and I'm using the term legacy media deliberately because this show was never about comedy. Wasn't. Not even way back in the beginning. Tonight after 11 years Stephen Colbert will do his final show after his show was cancelled. Literally the show was cancelled because late night is over. And to be clear I've got no issue with late night hosts making fun of politicians or Donald Trump. But guess what? It's got to go both ways and it never does. Stephen Colbert could literally take his show to CNN tomorrow night and not change a thing and it would fit right in. He even could ask some of the same questions that he asked to some of the same guests.
I like the pocket square. Thank you. Oh yeah, so this is a special freedom of the press and freedom of speech pocket square.
On Saturday nights the White House Correspondents Dinner.
>> I did not know. And um there are a bunch of us that are going to be wearing these. This is from the Reporters Committee for the Free Press and uh cuz there might be some guests there that are unfamiliar.
Oh my goodness. Jake, unfamiliar like you. Jake Tapper, Stephen's favorite guest, one of them. Colbert show was always to the left. When it started it was to the left. Obama was still president. Woke was in. It was trendy.
Crazy was trendy. Insanity is trendy now. But his show never rated and there is a reason. Even when you compare it to other late night shows like Jimmy Kimmel, it never rated but the critics always defended Colbert because he was such a good liberal. Saying the show didn't do well because it was on CBS and nobody watches CBS but in reality it was always Stephen.
The first late night host to come down with a wonderful affliction called Trump Derangement Syndrome. Our money is under attack.
Thanks to the Trump administration.
>> Donald Trump may be destroying civil society. He's reportedly planning a military parade through DC for his own 79th birthday.
A military parade for a dictator's birthday. After a bizarre and vicious campaign fueled by a desperate need not to go to jail, Donald Trump has won the 2024 election.
I mean just we're going to get to Johnny Carson, but just think about that. That was the day after the election. Stephen Colbert blames Donald Trump for everything. His show gets cancelled, he blames Donald Trump, which has become like the mantra for the left. Something bad happens and the excuse is always, "Yeah, but Trump." Somehow it's always Donald Trump's fault and it had nothing to do with CBS losing $40 million a year on this show. $40 million. Think about that. This show makes money for Newsmax.
That show loses $40 million a year.
Stephen Colbert has a staff of over 150 people and he's not funny. I have a staff right now of six and occasionally I'm funny. Allegedly, reportedly, of course.
Stephen Colbert has made me laugh. I don't know when, but I guarantee you over the last 11 years he has made me laugh. So I'm not just going to be like dishonest. In his first year on the air, he didn't mean it, but he even said that he liked Donald Trump, too.
I'm liking him a lot.
I'm liking you, too.
I'm liking you, too.
They all said that at that time because they thought Trump was a joke. Nobody thought Trump was going to win. Not on the left. And before Trump got into politics, he was like friends with everyone. Don't forget he had the number one show at one time on NBC. Bill and Hillary went to his wedding.
Remember when Jimmy Fallon tussled his hair before the election?
Can I mess your hair up?
>> [cheering] >> Did you say yes? Go ahead.
But my hair's fake.
>> [cheering] >> No!
>> Okay, so after the election, everything changed for Colbert and the rest of them.
Information truth is freedom >> [music] >> is Newsmax. It's real [music] news for real people.
