The Twisha Sharma case reveals how women in India face systematic character assassination within marital relationships, where educated women are subjected to public slander, infidelity accusations, and identity destruction by family members like mothers-in-law, despite their education and ambitions, reflecting a broader societal pattern where such violence against women becomes normalized and forgotten as just another statistic.

Twisha Sharma Case: Shobhaa De Slams 'Character Assassination' Of Dead WomanAdded:
mother in law, who's been one of the most visible faces in all of this. We only see Twisha in, you know, in her pictures and her happy wedding videos.
She's dead, unfortunately. The mother-in-law has had the, you know, biggest voice in this narrative, Miss Day. You've seen the things she said.
She said, you know, talked about multiple sex partners, you know, psychological counseling, the this this whole affair about an abortion, and accusations of infidelity.
You know, the ugliness of allegations spilling into public view in the Twisha Sharma case. What did you think about that? A mother-in-law saying these things.
Well, you know, but the the interesting part is how the young of India, young women of India have responded to those allegations.
I've been following it closely, as you mentioned, and a lot of the reads are saying, "Why not ask the mother-in-law how many partners she had before she got married?" After all, she's not exactly 100 years old. She's a contemporary woman in her 60s. Has anyone dared How would she respond to allegations that she herself has a has a dark and promiscuous past?
>> Yeah. It's so easy, and it's so common that girls are subjected to this kind of slander, even when they're in the marital home. The insinuations, the rejection, the lack of respect, the kind of poisoning of whatever whatever good feelings she's come into the home with, are destroyed.
They're destroyed systematically to the extent that the girl has no identity left at the end of it all. Now, this we're talking about educated, beautiful young girls. Forget the beauty part of it. An educated young girl with ambition, who's looking forward to her life with this person she's married in good faith. What happens? It's so clear that along with her, there are millions of other Twishas in our society. They must be looking at this and also looking around them them their own homes their their homes and my marital homes and wondering it's her today, it can be me tomorrow. Is that going to change anything? Do you think even if this mother-in-law is jailed and spends the rest of her time life behind bars, there'll be other mothers-in-law who will stop and question themselves and say, is this how we treat a a daughter-in-law? You know, the most of the time the Bahu Rani is reduced to becoming a a glorified Naukrani. No matter what her education may be, no matter what her ambitions may be, that is her role. Even this woman, this this judge who calls herself a liberal, if you please, is talking about her daughter-in-law not taking lifting the plates off the breakfast table and airily saying, of course we have servants to do all that, but it is a daughter-in-law's duty. In this day and age, we're hearing this. Do you think it's going to stop? I'm sorry if I'm sounding very pessimistic about I I really don't have that much hope that there's going to be a a qualitative difference in the way mothers-in-law going to be treating their daughters-in-law because of this one case. We've seen many cases like this.
There are dowry deaths even probably as we speak there'll be someone 16 a day is the number, by the way. 16 a day. in exactly the same way. 16 a day, 16 a day. So, what who they may not be a a a gallant and proud brother to defend those girls. It'll be just one more statistic and we'll all forget and our lives will carry on.
