When institutions schedule examinations on religious holidays like Bakrid despite declared public holidays, this reflects a deeper societal issue: the normalization of indifference toward minority traditions and the prioritization of logistical convenience over mutual recognition and dignity. True democracy requires institutions to demonstrate empathy by recognizing that others' cultural practices, festivals, and beliefs matter, even when they don't directly affect the majority. Societies decline morally when they lose the capacity for coexistence and compassion, treating pluralism as merely an inconvenience rather than a fundamental value.

Bakrid Exam Controversy#EmpathyInEducation#DelhiUniversity#shorts#RichardSennett#AshisNandy#ytshortsAñadido:
When a university holds examinations on Bakra Eid despite the declaration of a public holiday, the issue is not merely about a date on the calendar. It becomes a mirror reflecting the moral condition of society. At first glance, many people may see this as a minor administrative issue. Some may even ask, "What is the problem if students can take the exam later?" But the real issue goes much deeper. It is about how institutions respond to the emotional and cultural realities of different communities. A society does not become democratic merely by conducting elections or displaying constitutional slogans.
Democracy also depends on empathy, the ability to recognize that another person's festival, pain, or belief matters, even when it does not directly affect us. What is troubling today is the growing normalization of indifference. Increasingly, accommodation itself is treated as a burden. Sensitivity is mocked as weakness, and inconvenience to the majority is considered more important than the dignity of minorities and respect in a world of inequality.
Sociologist Richard Sennett argued that modern societies often produce subtle forms of humiliation in everyday life.
Humiliation is not always physical violence. Sometimes it appears through dismissal, indifference, or the message that someone else's traditions do not deserve equal respect. Similarly, in time warps, Ashis Nandy warned that societies decline morally when they lose the capacity for coexistence and compassion.
The danger is not only political polarization. The greater danger is the emotional hardening of society when people begin to derive comfort from the discomfort of others. Rituals and festivals are not merely private beliefs. They shape memory, belonging, emotional well-being, and collective life.
For many people, Eid is not just a holiday. It is a sacred social moment tied to prayer, family, and community.
And this is why the controversy matters.
The question is not only whether examinations should have been rescheduled. The real question is, are our institutions becoming incapable of understanding pluralism except as a logistical inconvenience?
A democracy survives not through efficiency alone, but through mutual recognition. The day we stop caring about each other's dignity, secularism becomes an empty word.
The question, therefore, is not simply about one exam or one festival. The question is, what kind of society are we becoming?
Think about it.
