Detroit students hospitalized after eating suspected marijuana edibles

[00:00:09]>> And I'm Whitney Bernie. Reports are coming from two separate schools two days in a row. Yeah, this is not the first time edibles have been ending up in the wrong hands. Right now, pediatric THC edible exposures are up by more than 1,300% across the country. In 7 News Detroit, reporter Randy Wimbley is your Detroit reporter. Tonight, he's hearing from the district experts and one emotional mother describing what her 7-year-old daughter just went through.

[00:00:36]The parents I talked with are livid and warning their kids not to take candy or snacks from anyone. DPSCD is launching an investigation to find out where those edibles came from and how the kids got a hold of them. My baby is literally in there twitching and shaking. Can't keep her eyes open like it is terrible.

[00:00:54]7-year-old Winter Williams is being treated at Children's Hospital after unknowingly consuming what may have been a marijuana edible at Mason Academy on Detroit's Eastside Wednesday. The situation has her mother, Adrienne Anderson, tearful and fuming. I don't have none of that stuff in my house. My baby was perfectly fine this morning when I dropped her off at school. Wasn't nothing wrong with her.

[00:01:14]Then I get to work. An hour later, they called me saying my baby acting erratic, acting crazy. I go up there, my baby sleeping in a nurse's arms. Can't even keep her eyes open. Winter's hospitalization comes on the heels of six students at Thomas Edison Elementary School in the Grandmont-Rosedale neighborhood on Detroit's Westside being hospitalized for consuming what district officials believe were marijuana edibles on Tuesday. A spokesperson for the school district says they're expected to recover. The news of what happened has left parents floored. And I was scared that my son or my daughter, cuz they both go here, could have been involved in any of that. So, I tell them now every day that I drop them off, well, since yesterday, don't take candy from nobody, especially if you ain't see what wrapper it came out of. If you want some candy, just ask me. I can bring you some up here. These parents have to be more accountable for all the things that they have around in these houses and make sure these kids are not, you know, exploring. DPSCD says right now it's unclear how the students got a hold of the edibles. The district is conducting a full investigation, tracking the students' route from home to school, including any stops made in between, to figure out where the marijuana products came from. Edibles can come in the form of brownies, cookies, or candy, and can often have 10 to 20 times the THC found in a typical joint. The Michigan Poison and Drug Information Center at Wayne State says symptoms in kids can include lethargy, uncoordinated movements, an elevated heart rate, and even trouble breathing. Senior Director Varun Vora says some cases can be drastic.

[00:02:40]Typically, those heavier cases, they will end up in the pediatric ICU, where they'll need more intensive monitoring.

[00:02:46]Um, and again, if the airway becomes an issue, they may require intubation and ventilation. The district says kids getting a hold of edibles has been a problem ever since the legalization of recreational marijuana. If you suspect your child has gotten a hold of edibles, in addition to calling 911, you can also reach out to the Poison and Drug Information Center at 1-800-222-1222.
