Vintage sports card grading companies like SGC and PSA have significantly increased turnaround times, which has diminished the excitement of the collecting experience; collectors should not skimp on declared value when submitting cards for grading, and pricing vintage cards requires researching recent sales of similar graded cards to establish accurate market value.

SGC/PSA Ruins the Excitement of Card Grading, Exercises in Valuing Vintage and More! The Hit List!Added:
Welcome to the hit list episode 28. The I don't know. Uh >> Buster Posey.
>> I'm fine with it.
>> Okay. Buster Posie episode.
>> The hit list. We're back. We're getting our uh we're getting our our chops busted by the odd couple as we as we start recording.
>> Couple bushes. Ask me.
>> Bushers. Bushers. Couple bushers.
>> Bush leagues. Bush leaguers. Yeah.
Bushers.
>> Love those guys. They Tony they give us crap because we don't have an intro song. The thing is like I didn't I didn't Well, you know it's it happens.
You you don't you can't have my Moss unfortunately. But >> yeah, >> sadly >> the uh Tony Tony grew up with this guy that uh that did his intro song like a big-time musician. Like I don't you know I can't compete with that. Yeah. Yeah.
This guy was like a you know his his buddy from his childhood did his intro song. So we don't have an intro song.
You could sing if you wanted Matt but I don't I don't know. Oh, no. You don't want that.
>> We don't want that.
>> We don't want that. Now, maybe we could have AI make a song.
>> No.
>> Okay. N >> I refuse. But but uh but uh the uh I we could maybe we could well that song that I use at the like for the bumper like the intro and outro of my of the regular wax pack was you don't know because you would never you don't ever watch any of my videos but uh the that's like something I pulled from like a from like a YouTube like music library like a like free license like library. Maybe we could find something like that. I don't know.
>> Um but yeah no we're here anyway. This is great start to the show. Uh we're here uh it's uh it is Tuesday. It's our regular recording day. Um as has been noted by it was this was just what was noted by the odd couple guys is that everybody is putting out their shows on Tuesday now. Uh the the the surface issues guys moved their show to Tuesday.
Collector investor podcast is Tuesday.
The odd couple when they come out is always Tuesday. So it's a lot of competition. Um >> you really concerned?
Uh well, you know, I I'm concerned about everything. The cream will rise to the top, my friend.
>> Oh, okay. Macho Macho Man over here.
>> Macho. All right.
>> All right. The We are the uh >> So, I I always forget. What did they call >> You seen those other shows?
>> Yes, of course.
>> Come on. Come on.
>> What did they call Hulk and Macho? What were they called >> when they were the duo?
>> Oh, jeez. And I know this, too. That's what's so bad. People are going to be People are going to >> uh It was the It was the Maniacs and the Oh god.
>> Oh, that's bad. No, no, no. You can't look it up. Let's just move on. Hit me.
>> Never mind. All right. This was >> Mega Powers. The Mega Powers.
>> Mega Powers. All right. You We got there eventually.
>> I knew I'd get there. Sorry about that.
Cut that.
>> We're the We're the Mega Powers. Uh hopefully it doesn't end. I feel like those guys that didn't end particularly well for uh their their friendship and >> not great m Yeah, >> a lot of tag teams don't really sail off into the sunset together.
>> This is true. It's a good point. Um all right, so >> uh let's get started here on the list.
>> The good news is the other guys stink.
>> Yeah, the Well, wait a second. Hold on. I have to say I have to acknowledge >> you said Yeah. the but but the I I I I take it back because those guys are all very complimentary of us and I have to say like very sincerely at the start of the episode that they dropped today the um >> uh the surface issues guys >> they had >> who's that incred that's Mike and Greg they had incredibly they were incredibly nice about us they said incredibly nice things uh genuinely sincerely they talked about like I think it was Mike who said the No, no, seriously. Like, and Mike said that like the like we have gotten like it's crazy. We're coming up on a year. Our year anniversary of the first show. Oh, >> we did >> was the first week of June. It was right before I had my surgery.
>> And uh so, you know, basically like over time we've gotten better and you know, we have more of a a uh a cadence and a rapport and like we've gotten more comfortable doing this and it's we've gotten better over time and I I would agree with that. You know, you've gotten a lot better. I was good from the start.
you've you've gotten way better.
>> That's fine.
>> But thank you to those guys. That was very kind. And uh I >> when you're up the rung on the ladder like we are, it's tough to like >> take you know. Thanks. We know. We know. But yeah, >> I wanted to say also I I don't usually do this or I haven't done this recently, but >> we are like really close on Wax Back Wisdom to getting to 1500 subscribers.
>> Like really close. I got my own channel.
I got >> If you haven't subscribed, please subscribe. It means a lot to us. Uh please >> like, comment, and subscribe. I can't make it clear enough.
>> Okay, so let's talk about let's talk about cards. Um you uh going way back, people might know this, Matt sent in a big SGC order and uh the cards, it took a long time. It was a 65 card order, which is a lot of cards to send into >> cards. A showcase and a half as I call it.
>> You had the cards. What? They went into postgrading on Thursday, right? Last week or Wednesday? Thursday.
>> Wednesday or Thursday. It was after we already >> It was after we'd already recorded and we had this whole plan. We wanted to do like live grade like live grade reveal all this stuff.
>> Thursday still postgrading. Friday still postgrading. Yesterday, Monday is still postgrading today. Finally, this morning, >> this morning I wake up to the email, you know, your your thing is [ __ ] >> So, so it kind of ruined our >> No, nothing nothing was posted until this morning, >> right? Yeah, they don't they usually they don't >> they don't post the grades until the cards ship. That's that's how they handle it.
>> And then I got a notification that FedEx has it, which is great. So, I'll have it for the weekend.
>> Great. That's good to hear, too, because like it usually us I usually do USPS. It probably maybe it makes >> I do FedEx today.
>> Yeah, it makes probably probably should do that in the future, but you should uh you should have those in time for this weekend and you finally we'll get to it later, but you finally finally have card shows this weekend. My gosh, finally ages.
>> Um so you and uh we talked about did you want to show the cards or whatever and I think you and I are both like kind of superstitious about this like just like get the cards in my hand. I don't want it.
>> But but you but overall seemed like you were pretty happy with the grades.
>> I was really happy. Yeah. Really, really happy.
>> And a lot of >> surprised me.
>> A lot of raw t a lot of T206s you had sent in that were raw.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Most of most of the order was that a few other big cards too like other other big names. Is a Ted Williams in there and a few other. So you'll So depending on what sells this weekend, you'll I'm sure we'll see a bunch of those uh in next week's show. Unless you unless you sell unless you sell all of them this weekend.
>> Well, what I'll do is I'll just save all the pictures from SGC. So, we'll show what the order came back with no matter what.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> And then whatever sells sells, who cares?
>> And uh there's a there's a topic later that we'll reference one of the cards that uh is uh that was in in the order that that got sent back, a really rare card. Um but uh but yeah, just you know, we've we've beat this dead horse. We've talked about it a lot, but man, the grading companies have just they have uh they have sucked a lot of joy out of the experience of uh of this. And uh because I I always really liked obviously at f at first you send the cards into SGC, you get them back in like two weeks, they you know the grades pop, you get them quickly, it's fun. It didn't I didn't feel like like because I used to like to do the blind grade reveals like where I would I would get the cards. I wouldn't look at the grades at all and I would I would show them on the channel.
I remember the first time I ever did that was in was 2023 and I had sent a bunch of uh I sent a bunch of like bigger cards and I had bought a raw uh Kline rookie um at auction and I paid like I don't know I paid probably like a a one and a half or a two price for the card and I and you know it was back when they were doing things 5 to 10 business days. I got it back really quick. it what didn't feel like forever. So, I was fine with waiting to get the to get the cards and look at the grades like on camera.
>> And I remember the feeling of like I pulled out that Kline and I thought at best it was going to get a two >> like at best. And I I I got on camera and I flip the thing around and it got a four and I was like, "Oh, baby." And I just like it was that that version of, you know, but but now it's like the cars are gone for three months. I don't want to wait to see what the grades are, >> you know? It's always >> that's exactly that's exactly what happened with me. I like I plan on doing the live grade reveal and then I was just like I need to know like I've just been waiting so long. I need to know how these things went. Um and then of course with the card shows this weekend I can do the pricing and cross distribution now and have that ready to be stickered for the weekend. Um so yeah, the hard work will be done.
>> It doesn't make sense to wait. I just think like they uh they've taken that part of the fun out of it. Unless you are continue to be really patient and you want to you will wait, but I'm not that patient. And I think that um yeah, you know, there's been all this talk recently and lots of stuff like this whole story. I don't know if you followed it about PSA like gave away some guys like it's the $25,000 order and like gave whatever.
>> Okay. Okay. But there was a there was a there was two things going on at the same time at that thing. Okay. It just so happened to happen at Cardvol Foxboro by the way.
>> So it was a local thing to us.
>> Yeah.
>> But what happened was, as far as I know, is that there was a PSA guy taking submissions.
And he may as well have been taking donations.
And this this these cards just went in the wrong bin.
>> They just went in the wrong bin. um or folder or whatever. They just went in the wrong box, I guess. Um but yeah, crazy story. Crazy story.
>> It's a crazy story. And I think that like I think that to me there's there's two schools of thought. Like there's people that think that everything that like PSA does is nefarious and they like were trying they were like purposely trying to screw this guy like whatever.
And then there's the other side of it which I think is the truth which is just like it was just an instance of incompetence and like that happens with every company everywhere and it's not just spec but I think that PSA it is I think true that they've gotten they've gotten so big and there are so much things so many things going on that there's destined to be screw-ups of this magnitude that that happen. Um and I I don't think it's I don't think it's nefarious. It's not only nefarious in the sense that PSA just wants to make as much money as possible, but that's that's that's our society. Like that's how big business works. So like they want to make as much money as possible and the sort of operational happenings like you know be damned. So stuff like this is just is going to happen. But it does it hurts the hobby. It hurts us as collectors. But like I don't think it's nefarious. It's just like it's it's not somebody it's not like the it's not it's not Nat Turner is going like, "Okay, I'm going to screw this guy out of $25,000."
Like that's not that's not what it is.
Like it's not that.
>> No, of course not. But also, when grading companies make mistakes, generally they make money, right? So, right, they give they give a bad grade, send it back in, make another 25 bucks, right? So, their their incompetence usually works to their favor. Um but yeah, no good. Um, I don't know. They said they offered him 125, but that was the automatic response because he only claimed it was worth 125. Uh, but it was worth 25. But that's why don't skimp on the value.
>> Do not skimp on the value. I can't tell you. I I can't >> I overpay so much for shipping and whatever, grading, up charges, whatever, because it's just not worth it. If they lose it, they mess it up. Forget it.
Forget it. No good. Not worth it. I think that people when they submit cards to grade, they might not realize what that is exactly or they might think, "Oh, am I going to get charged more because I declared more value?" And >> well, you might, but it's worth it.
>> Well, with SGC, you won't like because >> the shipping though, it covers the shipping.
>> Yeah. So, yeah. Don't That's definitely good advice. If you do send cards into grade, don't like determine what the value of the card is and put that in there and don't skimp out on it because it's not it's not worth it otherwise.
>> Um, >> but going to what I was going to say is like and I'll show you know a couple cards that I you know we don't really have a lot of new pickups to show but like the way things have gone with SGC I've just been especially because I don't I don't have any desire to send stuff to PSA. Um, uh, I might send autos to PSA at some point, but it's not it's not a big priority for me. Just the fact that it takes so long to get the cards back and now like compared to what it was, obviously SGC, even at a threemon door-to-d dooror turnaround is a lot faster than PSA, that's still a long time. And um, I'm just more inclined to lower dollar value raw stuff, stuff that's maybe max, like a 100, 200 bucks.
Like I'm fine with just keeping them in in the like the one touches and like you know again not a paid advertisement but like Penny Slever does a really nice job with these. And this is my the Dixie lid that I just got the Jimmy Fox Dixie lid.
>> That looks good.
>> It looks good. This is one of the ones that you put like the the penny sleeve like in the holder.
>> Mhm.
>> So it doesn't dance around. And I'm just really happy with that. I don't feel the need to and the same with the Gabby Hartnet. like the same. I don't feel the need to send these into grade. May will I send these into grade at some point?
Maybe, but I'm not in a hurry. And then obviously also Penny Sleever like they have the ones that fit the specific size cards. They have ones for T206s and for Leafs and gouties and all that stuff.
And that's great. As a vintage collector, that's great. So, I'm happy with how they look. I'm happy to have them in my possession. Um, if I now it's different like you have a business.
You're trying to sell stuff and so so I get it. But like if I and if I eventually I eventually was like, "Okay, I want to sell this stuff," then yeah, I'll probably send it into grade. But if I'm just going to enjoy it, I I I I felt an obligation every time I got a card that was worth more than basically what it would cost to grade it, you know? I felt an obligation of like I got to send this in to grade. And I just I don't know. I just don't feel like I need to anymore.
>> And it's kind of freeing a little bit.
>> People go through ups and downs how you feel about it. and you'll go back the other way eventually and you'll come back this way again and just it's >> um you know with the cards that I sent out if if I had kept those cards raw and tried to price them with my eye right give them a grade with my eye and then price them two things would have happened one thing is people would have looked at me like I was crazy if if I had priced them spoiler alert spoiler alert I got a tons of ton of threes and fours >> out of these 50 some odd cards of a T206s >> really a ton of >> threes enforce. I would not have priced them that way. I would have priced them as one and a halfs, maybe twos, >> right? And so, but people see raw stuff at threes and four prices. They kind of look at you funny. Uh, especially with the chances of them being altered um and being authentic. Um, >> you know, and I would have undersold them and people would have looked at me funny. But now people are going to get them right at market value and it turns out I'm going to do really well. But, um, yeah.
Well, they might look at you funny, but that's not that's fine. No, but I was shocked by by the grades.
>> Yeah. No, you got some you got great You got You didn't really >> No, it's funny though when I look at the fours and I go, "Oh, yeah, that that looks like a four. It looks like a Oh, it looks like a three." You know, but but I'm very conservative seeing the card raw and sending it. So T206 in particular, T206s and caramel cards, like cards of that era, >> the sizing stuff is so hard to guess what they're going to grade it because so much of that stuff comes back men's size >> because there was no consistency to how they cut the cards, >> right?
>> Like zero. There was zero.
>> I had one card come back midsize. I was shocked.
>> You're lucky.
>> One came back midsized, one came back uh trimmed. And it I mean it was clearly trimmed.
>> Um No. Out of the 50 some odd T206s.
>> That's amazing because Yeah. So that's why it's so hard >> quite an order >> to price them to price all those cards raw. Yeah. You'd be selling yourself short because let somebody else decide or or an expert if we want to call them that decide measure the card and see okay this is good. Get a three a four whatever because yeah it's a big difference. But to me, that's the biggest the biggest hard thing to know is because I just they they do say that there is a standard size for those cards, but >> none of like no two cards that came out of that factory.
>> And then like the American Beauties, you know, those were cut different as I found out.
>> And you know, I spoiler alert, I got a three on one of the American Beauties I sent out >> and I I wouldn't have never priced the further. I would have never known how much it was worth. I no idea.
>> Yeah.
>> But now at least the reference.
>> Yeah. I was going to bring this up later, but let's bring it up now. So, you had sent me one of the one of the American Beauty back T206s >> that was like a common player. I'd never heard of the guy before. And he was on Rochester, which I assume was like >> international league, Eastern League, like one of these minor leagues.
>> And you were like, "How do I price this?"
>> Because it's like the last the last one in that uh particular uh the last one.
Sorry, that was that was a phone call.
Um the last Thanks for letting us know.
The last one in that particular uh grade for that player that sold it was like 2021 or something like that.
>> And I'm like >> the same grade.
>> Yeah, it wasn't even the same grade.
It's like a >> four or something.
>> Pop four PSA and there's usually a few more in SGC. It's usually a higher number for SGC. So So guess 6, seven, eight, something like that.
>> Pop. It's a top 10 at best, you know, something like that.
>> Good luck. Like how do you price that card? How do you price that card? And I said to you, >> booms, crashes, and booms since the last time that car is sold.
>> Right. Well, I said to you, >> I said to you, you didn't like my suggestion, but I what I suggested was look up if there are other commons.
>> Yeah.
>> From American Beauty back in that grade, >> right?
>> And see what they sold for recently. And your response was, "Well, who has time to do that?" I'm like, "Okay, Matt."
>> No, I did that uh since >> Oh, so you did that? Oh, wow. How about that?
>> Well, then let me finish. It was a great idea, but I'm not going to let you know that. So, that's what I did.
>> Jerk. What do you >> So, so is that how you're going to price the card is based on >> Yeah, there's no other way to figure it out. Yeah, >> man. You just tell you what, you know, tell you what, >> you can't you can't let you you know, I'm glad you I'm glad you saved saying that I was right for the podcast. That's That was nice. That was nice of you.
Actually, >> you called me out on it. I'm not going to lie to you.
>> All right. So, we're and we're going to get back like we're going to have a little game later uh that's about sort of pricing and value. So, yeah.
>> Okay.
>> Um >> it's exciting.
>> Well, you you suggested it. That's that's why >> uh >> I I I suggested things.
>> Let's talk about a let's talk about a funny story. So, you said uh last week you were going you uh you've been thinking about pairing down some PC stuff.
>> Oh, do you have the picture for this? I I don't I could try to grab it actually.
>> No, no, no. It's okay. I'm glad you don't. I'm glad you don't.
>> Okay. Well, so so you decided to call in some help to help you with pairing down some cards for your PC. So, why don't you tell the story?
>> Yes. I'm just trying to make cuts, keep making cuts because I've been picking up cards and the market's booming and trying to make some decisions. And so, I put all my um what do you want to call it? Uh man, post World War I.
>> Okay.
>> Into a box. Okay. postw World War I cards into a box.
Gave them to my father. I said, "I want you to go through these." Now, he's becoming more and more knowledgeable about he's been helping me set up for the last six months or whatever it's been, however long it's been, a year, maybe.
>> Um, >> but he still is not he doesn't know it all. Right? So, I said, "Do me a favor.
Go through this stuff. See what you think." Like, you see a lot. I get a lot. I have a lot of inventory. Like, let me get rid of this. You know, something that you just don't need to hold on to. Right.
>> And, um, do you remember the first card he pulled out? Because I don't remember.
Was it the Dean? Was it a >> It was the Dean and we had just talked about it on the podcast >> like a 33.
Mine was 34, but yeah, we were talking about 33. So, he pulls I have a PSA 34 Dean. The thing looks like a seven. I think it might have like a pinhole. I don't know what's wrong with it. I forget what's wrong with it, but the thing is stunning. And he's like, I think you got to get rid of this. And I was like, you can put that right back in that box right now. Put that right back in that box right now.
Um, yeah. And then what did he what did he pulled out another one and I was just never going to work then just No.
Absolutely not.
>> Yeah. Just like it was it was a nice it was a good idea.
>> I wish I had Oh, I wish I remember what cards he pulled out. No, no chance of that happening.
>> Oh, okay. Yeah. First 34 Dean says I should sell it. And then now he says uh he says 51 Bowman Ted.
>> Oh yeah. Imagine. Can you imagine?
>> Yeah.
>> Never. Never. And then >> I do upgrade that card, but I don't I have no card of 51 Bowman's head.
>> And then he said 48 Leaf Deaggio.
>> No. Again, a one that looks like a seven.
>> I No. And if I sold that now after you waited and went and bought a different copy, I'd never hear the end of it.
>> You would never hear the end of it.
>> This would be the last.
>> Only time I'm selling this one that looks like a seven is if I find two that looks like a seven. That's it. Yeah, fair. That's That's fair. But yeah, I want I begged you for that. I begged you for that card for months until I found mine at Strongsville.
>> I think I pulled out uh 56 >> 56 Greyback Aaron SGC 4 and a half.
>> Really nice card. Sharp, decent centering. It's a nice card.
>> I don't need a forward. I don't need an SGC four and a half. Um >> so I'm just going to wait for And those cards are that card's always in and out in and out. So, I'll wait till I'll grab a nice three, a centered three or something. PSA. Um, but yeah.
>> Well, sorry. Yeah. Funny funny.
>> You learned your You learned your lesson on that one. But >> yeah, he can look through all He can't make any final decisions, but I'll listen to him. I'll >> No final. He can make suggestions.
>> Um, but yeah, funny. Funny.
>> All right. And ne next thing is uh does Matt love modern cards?
>> Oh, yeah. That's right. So, you know, I got the best flipping card show this weekend.
>> Yes.
>> Um, >> huge show. I think it's their fivey year anniversary.
>> Yes. Yes.
>> Huge show. And it feels like we haven't had this show since early April. Like, it's been longer than like it's hasn't been like an average four, five, four and a half weeks. It's been like almost six weeks, I feel like.
>> Well, it feels that way, I'll tell you.
>> Well, the last one was during Shriner, so you weren't there.
>> Oh, there you go. So, I haven't been there for two months. There you go.
That's >> your cousin. Your cousin set up, right?
>> That's right. He covered the tables for me. Uh, and he had a good show. That show just doesn't miss. So, yeah, really excited to be back at that show. Um, so I was going through, you know, modern cards to be ready for the flipping show because that's, you know, >> and I had bought the Steph Curry PSA 8 rookie card. Hadn't sold the last show and I hadn't had a show for a few weeks.
So, I said, I better check this price. I know that mod stuff can be really dangerous >> because Yeah.
>> Look at the pod's up $250 or $200. $200. It's up $200. I couldn't I think it was at 19 last I saw. Now it's a 21 or 2150 something like that. I couldn't believe it. Um but yeah, what a strange what a strange game that modern card, you know, and he hasn't done anything except continue not playing in the playoffs. Like he had already lost when I bought he had already lost when I bought the card.
>> So there's no reason for this card to go up or down. Just kind of I don't know.
But it's gone up it's gone up 10%.
That's a ton.
I don't know. Do you have anything on that? I don't know.
>> No, I mean playing the modern game right is it can be it can be a money maker and you play it wrong, it's a money loser.
It's quite >> future Hall of Famers when they get knocked out of the playoffs >> and then sell six weeks later for no particular reason.
>> Yeah, exactly.
>> I don't know. I just weird because he's gonna I'm not a I don't even like the word goat, but like the you know he's one of those guys that they say is a goat.
>> Yes.
>> So he's like you know he's like you know Brady's rookie card. to, you know, really stable. Um, at least the floor is really high. Um, >> yeah. Yeah.
>> Seems like the ceiling that I doesn't make sense to me, but >> Well, I mean, Brady at this point, obviously, he's retired, so it doesn't really >> Yeah, but Curry Curry, there's nothing he can do more that's going to make his story better. Even if he wins a late title, what's the Who cares, >> right? Yeah. He's He's done it all. He's won the titles. He finally the the one against the Celtics, he he won a Finals MVP. like he's >> greatest three-point shooter of all time. Everybody says he's top 10 player of all time. I don't buy it. But anyways, >> and everyone Well, and everybody loves him, you know, people people.
>> So, there's nothing he's going to do.
>> Family man. Yeah.
>> That going to spike that card. That should spike that card.
>> Most likely not. And I I think that uh but but >> basically a vintage card now, >> right? Yeah. So, so it but like the in general though the playing the modern market it's so there are things that can happen with the players in their you know their personal lives or whatever that that affect it and also the play affects it too and that's that's wild to me. It's like Drake May has this like you know looks has this amazing season and is seems like he's on track to win the MVP. He like and then in the course of a couple weeks it's like he barely misses out on winning MVP and then he lays a stinker in the Super Bowl which wasn't totally his fault but like that was you know he he had like it was the worst game basically >> the modern market is absurd the whole thing is just absurd just absurd >> by vintage that's our that's always our our motto here is uh you know the odds are that uh you know Jimmy uh Jimmy Fox is not there's not going to be some revelation hopefully about Jimmy Fox uh in in uh in 2026 about you know whatever he died in the 60s I think like you know 60 years after his death. So there you go.
>> Um so yeah, stick to stick to the the the vintage stuff and you should be okay.
>> Um we're kind of flying through the list here. I hope we can we can stretch this out a bit, but uh all right. So this is the guess the sticker. So do you have this card handy?
>> No.
>> You didn't send me a picture or anything either? No. What card was it? The the >> the M116 Maddie >> M here.
>> It's that's fine. So, basically what you you wanted to ask you basic well you >> Well, we already covered it basically with that American Beauty thing. The tough card hasn't sold in a couple years and then the market has boomed on these >> goat card. I can't believe it. These goat cards, right? Yeah.
>> So, the market has boomed on the goat cards and the card hasn't sold in a long time. So, I don't have a good baseline to figure out what this card might sell for these days. So, that's a tough thing to sticker price. And I hate not stickering a card. So, what do I do?
>> I already know.
>> Do you already know what you're going to sticker it at or >> Okay. Well, then then fine. So, I I pulled up the um the VCP for both of them. So, let's >> Oh, and and it's in the text message we sent that it does present really nice.
since it's a nice two and a half, which has to be factored in nowadays.
>> So, I'm going to do the uh I'm going to do this. This might look a little bit weird at first, but just so that we can toggle between the two. So, so basically here. So, yours is this one, right? The blue background.
>> The blue one. Yeah.
>> So, uh let me go back to the because I was looking at all the sales. So, it's it's an SGC 2 and a half you said, right?
>> And it's and it presents nicely. Yes.
>> So, like you were saying, basically the last one that sold was 2021. So, this is no of no use, >> right?
>> So, what I would then do is I look at uh well, first off, like this. So, this one and maybe and this one the population is a lot per PSA graded is lower than the pastel version. There's two versions of this car. There's this one that's the blue background. And then I did also pull up >> for the past. This is considered the pastel background. So there's two different versions of this card. This one, the blue one, this is uh at least PSA population is only 34 according to this. So you'd have to pull pull up gem rate to get probably more accurate data, but we don't need to do that. So this is a tougher cart than the than the pastel one. So, if I look at all sales, again, there's not a lot to go on here in terms of like a lower grade. Like, you have a back in March, there was this one and a half that's like not bad, but it's also offc center top to bottom.
>> Uh, >> right. But that that gives us a baseline. That's some somewhat of a baseline. You still got work to do, but that's somewhat of a baseline.
>> Right. And then there's this one that's a three.
>> That's >> old label. old label that sold like yeah I don't know like you look at like there's some scuffs there like is that really a three I don't know >> here's the worst part though Jake the way people the way people do this now forget the fact that you look at the card and break it down looks like it's just having an old label people people the price goes down like it just doesn't matter the card present great doesn't matter >> does the does the fact that it's the provenence of the Naggie collection mean anything to you >> we got to figure out who the Naggie is >> I don't know what that is I have no idea who is Naggie no idea >> no idea Uh, so anyway, so we so >> so this sold. When did this sell?
>> This was December or January of last year. So it's like >> so almost a year and a half. Okay.
>> Yeah. All right. So So that's kind of all we have to go on for the past for the blue background. The pastel background, like I said, populationwise, it's it's much higher.
>> What is the population for this one?
>> 94 for PSA. So it's just about just just under three times as many, >> right? So and if you look at this, I don't I don't know if this is part this doing this kind of thing looking at a different card would >> Let's keep looking. Let's keep going.
We'll see what happens.
>> All right. So authentic an authentic sold this was this says midsize looks kind of trimmed but but it's this says midsize. This was 2000 back in September. Mhm.
>> Um, we got a This is This is probably a beater. Yeah. Next up, Jacked Up one.
>> That wasn't That was pretty much exactly a year ago, >> right?
>> Uh, PSA1 sold for That's It's not terrible. It's like somewhat of an older label, but it's a nice looking one.
>> Assume the back looks good.
>> Let me take a look. Yeah, back's fine.
>> It's got the PWC sticker. How about that? Above >> average. We know. We know it's big.
>> Yeah.
>> What's the What's the newest sale? I I just I can't see the grades.
>> It's a This is an eight.
>> Oh, yeah. That doesn't matter.
>> That sold for 15K. A Well, I'm looking at the a pastel one. A six sold for 5400.
>> Yep.
>> This is all This is all within the last six months basically. Another six sold for 500 or for 5,000. But let then let's look at the past sell background ones because it's more instructive. Like a a a six just sold for 10k uh in REA last month.
>> And what did the PSA 6 and the pastel sell for?
>> Five.
>> So it's twice the price.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> You know, they're they look Oh, that so then a four sold in REA for 4K back in >> Okay. So that's good information too.
But then we I assume that card could have done more money on eBay >> probably. Yeah, probably would have been expo would have been exposed to more people probably.
>> Right.
>> Right. So >> like if more like if Greg Morris sells that card, it probably does more.
I'm thinking that this like so this is where this is where I >> when did that three sell that sold 16 months ago >> the the three yeah this was in this was >> so so my guess I I would start with so now I'm going to start thinking that my two and a half is about the value of that three >> okay >> and now we have to factor in how the market has changed over the last here.
>> Yeah. Right.
>> Right.
>> Yeah. Mhm. So, so the the the conceit of this was that I was going to say a number and you were going to tell me how wrong I was.
>> Yeah. No, just because I don't think you would have gave it this much effort.
>> Yeah. Let me stop sharing. There we go.
Uh >> so, what do you got? What do you got first? Pick a price for me.
>> 36.50.
Yeah, that's not bad. Um, >> all right.
>> Yeah, that's pretty good. That's pretty good. I think the market's up some I I don't want to say it's up 30% 20% 40%, but it's some somewhere between 20 and 40% on those big cards.
>> Um, so yeah, I would say 35 to 38. Maybe 38.
>> Yeah. Well, in the comments, let us >> in the comments, let us know what you think because we're we're open to ideas.
Uh uh or we're open to we're just curious if you think that is there anything in is there anything in the thought process that we missed? You know, I just would be curious what people think.
>> Some cards are just hard to price.
>> It's >> that's probably why those other guys just slap 10,000 on it and be done with it.
>> Yeah. I I think that like >> also I'd like to touch on while I'm talking about those guys. Um, you know, I'm getting these 65 cards back. I don't even have them yet. And I'm already working on the pricing, the sticker, the stickers, the cost. I'm doing that all right now. Think about if you're setting up at the national, you still got multiple months to do that to your cards. So, everybody get together and sticker your cards for the national.
>> It's easy. You got plenty of time. If I can do it, you can do it.
>> You can We got a little over a little over two months.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh for that. Uh you're looking for You're excited for the national? I'm excited for the nationals.
>> Yeah, it's going to be great. It's going to be great to see everybody to hang out to do.
>> I I'm looking forward to hanging with the crew.
>> Yeah, it should be good. Um and uh you know, we'll see what the uh see what the weather's like this time. It was It'll be hot. It's always hot in Chicago. I I got to tell you that I I think that >> I'd say that there's probably a pretty good chance that 2027 that the national will probably be off the table for for me for us. I don't know. May maybe um it's just a lot, you know, three years in a row in Chicago, like basically doing our summer vacation in Chicago three years in a row. Like it's I don't know. It's Detroit the year after probably we'll probably we'll probably do that.
>> But okay, uh the national 2027 I'm feeling like >> maybe it's just maybe I because you know Abby went with me last year, she's going to go with me this year, too. Maybe next year. Maybe I only go for a couple days.
>> All right. So, yeah. So, we're definitely looking for a new co-host for the hit list starting next year >> because I'm not gonna like it's different. I mean, you got a you know, you're you got a business, you know, but but like it's for me it's I don't know.
I just I don't know how wax pack wisdom isn't represented at the national.
>> I'm not saying not going. I'm not I'm just saying I don't the whole week. It's just a lot. I don't know.
>> All right. Well, there for two days. I'm still going.
>> Yeah. Yeah. But that's, you know, it's it's a cross that bridge when we get to it. It's a way. We got to go get through this national first. They have I mean, look, they I think that they do a good job with the show there. It's it's uh it's huge. It's so There's so much stuff. Have you been to the national at other locations? Have you only ever been to Chicago?
>> No. Atlantic City.
>> Oh, you went to the Atlantic City one.
What was that like?
>> What a what a dump.
The inside's good for for for the venue is good, but the outside's a dump. That whole >> It's hard for me to imagine.
>> A dump.
>> Yeah. Well, that's a whole other thing.
I I've I've been to Atlantic City and Yeah, it's but but not for the National.
Um, I think that there's I I would be surprised if they did the show in a location that was like on either coast again. I feel like they've kind of got >> Well, they're definitely not going to do Atlantic City again.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I I think that they got this.
>> Well, not for a while at least.
>> Well, the 2028 show was between Detroit and Atlanta. Um, and you know, Atlanta's surprisingly not like geographically I feel like like in terms of east west, it's actually not >> those guys Midwest, they don't want to drive all the way to Atlanta.
>> I know. Well, that's why I think that's why Detroit ended up getting picked. You know, >> these guys got they got to drive their stuff. You know what I mean? Like too much stuff to fly.
>> Yeah. Yeah. So, um I'm But yeah, for sure I'm looking forward to it. And then you have you got Fanatic. When is Fanatics Fest?
>> Two weeks before the national in July.
>> Wow. So you got a busy July.
>> Busy July.
>> Yeah. And tell and tell tell everybody again Fanatics Fest. You have like a basically there's a guy a friend that >> another dealer. Yeah. He has uh he has a booth. Um but he doesn't really have I don't think he has enough for a whole booth. So he asked if I wanted to uh grab half the booth. So that's what I'm doing, you know. And everybody said there was no no not enough not enough vintage or no vintage last year. So, I don't see why we don't do well and get some exposure in New York. And >> well, I'm going to be >> I'm excited for you to go to that and then we get a, you know, report about what it was like in terms of like the vintage and stuff because there's I don't know. I don't know if it's Fanatics trying to pump it up, but I think like they want that show to be >> bigger than >> they want it to eclipse the national. Um >> I So we'll see how it goes this year, but I'm I'm fascinated to see how it continues to grow and if it's >> Yeah, me too.
>> If it uh if they can attract, >> you know, >> I'm really hoping that that positive relationship with the card vault, >> you know, gets me maybe on a uh >> Brady visit or somebody else, maybe, you know, who knows?
>> Maybe. Maybe.
>> I mean, I have a real good relationship with those guys. I mean, I I was one of their first customers when they first opened the Fox location, which is the first location. So, I mean, like I've known Viscosta for a while now. though.
>> Fingers crossed.
>> Maybe they'll come over.
>> Fingers crossed. Hook up hook you up.
Um, so yeah, I I think that uh the the other thing the other thing I was going to say about Fanatics Fest is that it feels like it's more of an event and like the card show is kind of part of the event, you know, like where it feels like there's a lot of like >> promotion and like different, you know, speakers and like, you know, people doing publicity stunt type things like, you know, >> it's not just a card show. It's it's it's Fanatics Fest and Comic Con. It's like Comic Con. It's Fanatics Fest and at Fanatics Fest, they have a car show.
That car show is enormous. But yeah, so yeah, >> we'll see. I'm interested.
>> Yeah, we will see.
>> And they got soccer license now. They just they got it all.
>> Fanatics is crazy. I mean, yeah, it's it's not good for the It's not good for the hobby in general, but like that's just the way that the the the business has grown. I mean, it's like Panini's basic like what does Panini have?
>> Well, If billionaires are putting money into this hobby, I it's good for the value of our cards. I'll tell you that.
>> That's That is true. I I don't disagree with that. I just >> money props up money. So, if they're going to prop up their money accidentally, our cards are going to be propped up. So, >> yeah. And it it to me it doesn't affect me as much because again, I don't collect modern and I don't buy boxes.
But it does because as LeBron James rookie card goes up, so does Mickey Mouse.
>> That's the way it works.
>> But I'm talking there's some different thing I'm talking about which is just that in terms of the quality of the product and the price of the product and all of that like modern stuff.
>> Okay. But can I just like make my point like >> Oh, sorry.
The point is just like there's no competition and they're going to do whatever they want and like the you know the the quality control is is not there and the prices go up and there's nobody there's nobody to compete with them now in like any of the sports other than what Upper Deck has the hockey license >> sounds like every product manufactured nowadays.
>> It's fair. It's a good point. But it's it just >> I've been talking to you about how awful modernity is for a while now. So let's just move on. Okay.
>> Okay. But yeah, no, it's I think it's great for the vintage cards.
>> Yeah. No, the the value the value stuff is good for the vintage card value.
>> I just don't want my cards good in value. That's all. That's the only thing I worry about. Right.
>> I I think that we're in good shape on that at least in the short term. And I think that Yeah. So, we're going to I think that Well, I have a a a game that we're going to do. I don't know if you looked at the list for the for the uh the sports card club. We're going to do a draft for the sports card clubhouse this week.
>> So, Well, you have to stick around for that. Um, I don't we got >> for what?
>> Who >> the we are going to record a a sports card clubhouse extra innings and we're going to do a draft of cards for that.
>> I just wanted you to make it clear what you were going to do.
>> Yes. And but uh you know, so definitely so go over to Sports Card Clubhouse, check that out. Check and uh this week.
Um and uh so that's that's it. I don't have anything else. We're at 40 almost 43 minutes. We just got to talk about the shows this weekend again. Finally, >> finally back at it. I have been We texted each other multiple times about this. I am jonesing for a card show.
Jonesing for a card show. And then last Saturday there were two shows around here. There was a mall show at Solomon Pond and then the Rhode Island show they have that it's every other it's the second Sunday of every month. They moved it to Saturday because of Mother's Day.
Just so happens I had to go to my mother-in-law's house and help them do some I don't know. I I couldn't even describe what we did. We pulled pieces of house, put it back. I don't demolition. Demolition work. Demolition work.
>> Yeah. I don't know how to do anything, so I'm good for demo work.
>> Um, so yeah, my brother-in-law just put me to work. He's like, "You do that.
Take that down. I can do that."
>> So, don't break the pipe. Okay.
>> So, yeah. So, I couldn't go to two shows. So, Jonesing as I was, I couldn't even walk a show. Uh, but yeah, we're back at it this weekend. Two two days Saturday and Sunday. Saturday, best flipin in Wuburn. Five year anniversary.
Should be a boomer of a show. Um, and then Sunday, we're back in denim this week, which is old school home base.
Love being back there.
>> No, no, Emerald Square. Emerald Square.
Yeah, >> I knew it was Cardboard Promotions.
Okay. Cardboard Promotions. Emerald Square Mall. Sunday. I'm only there Sunday in my usual spot.
>> Only there Sunday. In my usual spot. Um, yeah, that's that show is crazy. So >> well yeah Sunday s Saturday is a big if you you know just in general if you go to card show Saturday is a huge day. You can >> if you depending on where you >> Yeah. You can go to Best Flip Go first and then go to Emerald Square and support Carbo Promotions but make sure you come see me Saturday >> on at in Wuburn >> at in Wuburn >> right and then Sunday and Sunday in at Emerald Emerald Square. So So those will be those are great shows. Um those are both I'm sure both shows will be packed.
Um, I will be there on Saturday. Um, at best flipping.
>> Yes, I will be there. That's that's close that's close to home for me. Um, I'll be there. I'll be there for however long you're there on on Saturday. I don't have anywhere else I have to be at least during the day. So, come by.
>> What's that?
>> I'm see works for me. Um, I will be there. Uh, I uh Sunday's uh probably a no-go. Um just got got stuff to do, but um but I'll but I'll uh I'll see you we'll have um um and yeah, it's it's good to get back in the swing of it. Um for sure. And yeah, the the the the best flipping shows are >> they're just they're packed. If you want if you want to come and see Matt, you want to come and see Matt and get get the good deals and stuff, come >> come early before it starts to get really busy in there.
>> Okay.
>> U that's that's my advice. if you want to go to that show. Um, >> show.
>> All right.
>> Did we stretch?
>> Oh, I forgot. Oh, I had I did have a pickup. I for I totally forgot. Um, I just have to and I I put it away, so I I'm just going to share it here. Um, >> let me just uh pull this up. It's uh What's this?
>> Oh, yeah. I love that card.
>> I was so happy this card sat in a you know, it was a buy it now on eBay. It just was it was on my watch list for months literally and I was just finally I had like I said I had money from eBay gift cards and stuff and I'm just like I'm just going to buy it. And yeah, this card is the color is is even better in is better in person. It was way better.
This is one of those This was one of those ones where you do yourself a favor and look up the, you know, when you see a card on eBay and you can make out what the Cert is, always do yourself a favor and look up the the the SGC or PSA scans um instead of what's what is maybe on eBay because I thought that the card looked a little bit and it can be deceiving either But the the listing in eBay, the scan that they used, I thought the card looked kind of faded and I was like, "Okay, I'm going to check SGC. I'm going to check the scans." And I saw and it looked like this. And I was like, "Okay." Like, you know, they didn't do themselves any favors in the eBay listing.
>> I love when they make I love when people make that mistake for us.
>> Yeah. So, maybe I maybe I maybe I shouldn't have said that, but now people will will know. But like but I'm that's just my word of advice to the community out there. Look up look up all other images of cards. Not even if even if it looks really good in the in the SGC or even it looks really good in the eBay listing. Like check the scans like cuz as long as it's new label SGC and it has the lighthouse label and PSA, it's going to if it's if it has old label SGC or or old label PSA, you're you may not be able to find the scans, >> right? Um, I guess you could always ask the seller for better for better pictures, too. Sometimes they they get might get a little bit touchy with that, but um, but uh, yeah, super happy with that one. And now I have now I have the the trio back together, the three guys.
>> Awesome.
>> And, uh, congratulations.
>> Very happy. Thank you. All right, so we're going to do Clubhouse. And, uh, and that's it. So, >> thanks for watching the hit list. Matt, what do we say?
>> Like, comment, subscribe, and collect.
