The 637HP Smart SUV That Makes No Sense

[00:00:05]When I first saw the words 637 horsepower and smart together, I thought it sounded ridiculous. But after seeing the 2026 Smart number five Braavos in person, I realized this thing is absolutely serious. This is a $72,000 electric SUV, and power is definitely not its problem. First of all, this is nothing like the tiny two seat smart cars people remember. The new Smart Number Five is a full-size compact SUV nearly 4.72 m long and even larger than the Scoda Inyak. The Braos version adds red accents on the front bumper, mirrors, side skirts, and brake calipers. It definitely looks sporty, although honestly, I think the SUV would actually look cleaner without all the extra red details.

[00:00:53]Still, the design works surprisingly well. The boxy shape gives it real road presence, and the headlights and oval taillights look modern without trying too hard to be futuristic.

[00:01:03]But the biggest surprise is the interior. The moment you step inside, it honestly feels more like a Mercedes than a Smart. The dashboard design, floating panels, ambient lighting, and material quality are genuinely impressive for this price range. You get microfiber sport seats, illuminated Braavos logos, a panoramic roof, and 256 color ambient lighting. It feels far more expensive than it actually is. The technology is also loaded. A 10.25 in digital cluster, a 13-in OLED center display, a massive augmented reality head-up display, plus a separate 13-in passenger entertainment screen. There's even a 20 speakeraker Sennheiser sound system and the audio quality is seriously excellent. But then we get to the biggest problem with this car. Almost every physical button is gone. Climate controls, heated seats, drive modes, everything is hidden inside the touchcreen. Even the door handles are electronic and honestly it becomes frustrating very quickly.

[00:02:05]Trying to adjust something while driving forces you to take your eyes off the road for way too long. Almost every reviewer who tested this car complained about the same issue. The interior looks amazing, but the ergonomics definitely need work. Now, in terms of space, the Smart Number five is actually excellent.

[00:02:23]The wheelbase is long, rear legroom is generous, and the floor is completely flat. Rear passengers even get heated seats and adjustable back rests. Three adults can comfortably sit in the back, and the panoramic roof makes the cabin feel very open and airy.

[00:02:39]Cargo space is also impressive, 622 L normally, expanding to over 1,500 L with the rear seats folded down. There's also hidden storage for charging cables and a surprisingly useful front trunk. As for range and charging, the numbers are solid.

[00:02:59]The car uses a 100 kWh battery with an 800vt architecture and supports 400 kW fast charging. Charging from 10% to 80% takes around 18 minutes. Official range is rated at 540 km while real world driving is closer to about 466 km which is reasonable considering the car weighs around 2.3 tons.

The Smart Number five Braus makes 637 horsepower and 710 Newton meters of torque with a 0 to 100 km per hour time of just 3.8 seconds. On paper, those numbers are incredible. But once you actually drive the car, something feels wrong because despite all that power, the suspension setup is basically the same as the regular Smart Number five. It's still soft, comfort focused, and uses passive dampers. So, when you launch the car, the front end lifts aggressively, and during corners, the body roll feels far too soft for something with 637 horsepower.

[00:04:08]That's why a lot of reviewers criticize the driving dynamics. The acceleration feels exciting once or twice, but after that, the car doesn't really feel as sporty as the numbers suggest. And honestly, I agree. So, here's my advice.

[00:04:23]If you really like the Smart Number five, the Pro Plus version probably makes more sense. It has the same battery, the same charging speed, and the same luxurious interior while still offering 358 horsepower, which is already more than enough for daily driving.

[00:04:38]And it costs around $30,000 less. Of course, if you just want the Bravo's badge and love the idea of owning the fastest smart ever made, then this car absolutely delivers that experience because no matter what, this is still the craziest and most luxurious smart ever built.
