Latinos BREAK Silence On The TENSIONS With Black Americans

[00:00:00]The tension between the black and Latino community needs to stop.

[00:00:03]>> Should we continue our conversation about the real unspoken tension between the black and Latino community?

[00:00:10]>> Latinos in the United States have not earned the support of black people.

[00:00:14]>> Black and brown unity does not exist.

[00:00:18]>> Before you conclude, understand this.

[00:00:20]This is not just a conversation. This is what happened when people finally say what they were told behind closed doors out loud. We are talking about black Americans, Latinos, and the tension nobody wants to admit in real time because white people keep shouting for unity. Some people were literally raised to stay away from each other. So what happens when those two words finally collide? This gets uncomfortable real fast.

[00:00:47]Mexicans speak Spanish because in 1521, Mexico was conquered by Spain.

[00:00:55]European Spain.

[00:00:58]This is why I'm never taking a back when a Mexican begins to exude these white eurosentric ideologies and behaviors their European descendants.

[00:01:12]For centuries, Mexican people, Hispanic people have been taught to act, assimulate, and worship whiteness.

[00:01:22]One thing is guaranteed with white worship, and that's black hatred.

[00:01:28]For centuries, Mexican people have hated and ostracized darker skinned people, even if they were family.

[00:01:38]Black and brown unity does not exist for good reason.

[00:01:45]selfhatred exists within both communities.

[00:01:49]And they all stem from a white nucleus, a white starting point. And until that white nucleus is addressed and those white ideologies are destroyed and dismantled, there will be no unity amongst the groups.

[00:02:07]But you all let me know what you think.

[00:02:10]Is black and brown unity alive and well?

[00:02:14]or is it time for us to start being honest?

[00:02:19]>> You know, I was born in Mexico, but when I first came to this country, literally the the people that I was warned against [music] or warned from was black people from the get-go before I even learned to speak English. I was told to be careful with people. Don't hang around them. They'll beat you up.

[00:02:37]They'll do this. They'll steal from you.

[00:02:38]All of the negative things that you could attach to a people, that's the first thing they told me when I came to this country is be careful with black people. It wasn't be careful with white folks. It wasn't be careful with the Asians, nobody. Just be careful with the black people. It is impossible for us to come together with black people because we are inherently and culturally racist.

[00:03:00]Our culture is very antilack. Meanwhile, we out here marching with signs that say brown and black unity. The truth is that in our household, we tell our sisters, we tell our daughters not to date y'all, to stay away from y'all. And if we find out what one of our aunties, one of our sisters, one of our daughters had a kid with one of you, we shame them. We even disown them. Is that we as a people that have been anti-black for a couple hundred years since colonialism, we can't possibly try to convince black people about brown and black unity. We can't. It's impossible because we're still very antilack.

[00:03:23]>> What if the idea of black and brown unity is just another lie we tell ourselves to feel safer in a system that was never built for us?

[00:03:31]Survival ain't the reason they don't side with us. It's preference. Think about it. In prisons, they don't roll with us. On the job sites, they don't hire us. In their homes, they don't want us dating their daughters. And in the courtroom, they often vote for policies against us. For my people want to cling to the few who march like it erases the ones who mock. And before you say that's not all of them, ask one of your Mexican partners what moorasa means.

[00:04:00]It means to improve the race, but improve it how? By whitening it. By erasing blackness. Go on and sit with that for a minute. They dance to our music. They talk like us. They move into our neighborhoods. And we let them. Then they gatekeep jobs, culture, and even respect. And we let them. This ain't about racism, man. It's about rivalry.

[00:04:26]Because nobody imitates what they pity.

[00:04:29]They imitate what they envy. And deep down they know what we got can't be copied. So maybe it ain't hate. Maybe it's hidden competition. Maybe it ain't ignorance. Maybe it's inherited bias. Or maybe blacks was never meant to look for allies. Just remember who we are. I love my people. I hope y'all safe out there and I hope you get home safe.

[00:04:51]>> So why don't Latinos like black people?

[00:04:53]I'mma tell you. It's because of our stupid ass Spanish ancestors and their white supremacist [ __ ] Now, when the Spaniards came to the Americas to, you know, colonize, they brought with them something known as casta, a cast system. Here's a historical painting showing the cast system and where people were put into their places. If this is confusing, this will make it a little easier. Now, the top of the casta was the Spaniards, people who actually came from Spain. And the people who usually came from Spain to the Americas were very wealthy aristocrats. Next in the food chain were their descendants, the creoleles. Now they were still Spaniards but they were lower on the food chain because they were born in the Americas because again white supremacist [ __ ] Next in the food chain we have mystisos. These are people descended from Spaniards and Native Americans. And then we have mulattoos descended from Spaniards and Africans. Now at the bottom of the food chain were Native Americans and African [music] slaves because again white supremacist [ __ ] Now this social structure these social classes were instituted for centuries in Latin America. But here's where the problem lies. Humans like to [ __ ] each other, whether willingly and with consent or sadly by rape. That means they have babies together. So this social structure doesn't really work when you HAVE A LOT OF MIXED BABIES because basically everyone became mestiso and mulatto together. Everyone just mixed. So what happens when everyone is mixed? Basically this middle section disappeared and colorism seeped into our cultures very deeply. So, Latinos who were more light-skinned were seen as being higher in the social structure because they were more like Spaniards. [music] And dark-kinned Afro Latinos were seen to be lower in the social structure because they were more like Africans, which again is stupid white supremacist [ __ ] Because most Latinos are this middle section, like me, mestiso. So, why are Latinos prejudiced against Afro Latinos and black people? Because our racist ass colonizing ancestors taught this to us centuries ago. And it's so ingrained into our culture that it's hard to unlearn it. But we need to start putting in the work and start unlearning this white supremacist [ __ ] Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

[00:06:50]>> Does it surprise you that California's largest racial bias cases are of Latino employees discriminating against and abusing black employees? So this is what's happening. The LA Times reports that black employees were being called the n-word, having bananas waved at them, and subject to other entities at the hands of their Latino supervisors and peers. One black man even experienced night terrors and was diagnosed with PTSD after the racism he experienced. But it also went beyond insults. Latino supervisors would needlessly fire black employees and/or pass them up for roles for less experienced Latino employees. And recently similar incidents occurred at a UCLA hospital, a Centry Valley vegetable farm, and a San Diego college. According to the article, one LA attorney said that 20 years ago, the feeling was that minorities cannot be discriminating against each other. But in answer to my original question, the article also points out that antilack prejudice in Latino dominated workplaces comes as no surprise to scholars of race relations due to a shared legacy of slavery and racial prejudice in the US and Latin America. But what are your thoughts?

Latinos, we got a lot of antilack racism in our community, and we usually let it slide cuz it's our family saying this race is [ __ ] And I'm going to need y'all to start calling out your family members because all you Latinos seem to forget that we Latinos also have black ancestors. We also have ancestors who were slaves in Latin America who came from Africa. Just because you are not an Afro Latino does not mean you do not have African ancestry. Black people are our family. We got to stop the racist [ __ ] and start working together.

[00:08:20]>> A political group chat that was leaked in Miami. Majority of the people in this chat were Latino, Hispanics, Cubans, and they were just being racist to black people. No black people were in sight, but just had us on their mind talking crazy.

[00:08:30]>> Abel Carbajal, who is the Latino for Trump, part of the Miami, Florida group message that recently went viral for being severely antilack. This is the most racist anti-black rhetoric I have heard in a while, and that's saying a lot. The group chat celebrates for >> Hold up, y'all. Hold up. We're going to read it, but I'm going to censor it very heavily. But this is insane, bro. I mean, just even in perspective, y'all, there's no black people in this group, chat. Black people minding their business. And these folks in here just thinking about us, talking [ __ ] about us, bro. Oh, this is crazy. He said, "Kill nwords, behead nwords, roundhouse, kick a n word into the concrete, slam dunk a nword baby into the trash can, crucify filthy blacks, defecate in the like, look at this, bro. A lot of these folks truly think they are white. They want to be white suprem. Like, this is literally insane to me. And I just want to bring up this point, y'all. The propaganda against black people is so crazy, man. We have never bombed anyone.

[00:09:26]We have never put nukes on into any country. We have never mass killed any group of people. We have never did any mass extinction of animals to people. We have the way that they hate us, you would think we I don't know. I truly like like seriously y'all think about how bad the propaganda is against us.

[00:09:42]Historically, we haven't started any world wars. You know what I'm saying?

[00:09:44]Look at the steing fouls. haven't did anything of that >> talking about violence against the black community and talking about violence against babies. I do want to make it very clear Abel Carbajal should resign.

[00:09:55]However, I have heard a lot of you call him Mexican. And I want to remind everybody that not everybody brown in the United States is Mexican. He is a Venezuelan. Now, not every Venezuelan is bad, but I do think the Venezuelan community should hold him accountable.

[00:10:09]And just to make it clear, he is not Mexican. Here is Mexico. Okay. Okay. I'm glad for him clarifying that, but it kind of still feeds into my theory like the brown thing cuz brown is broad. You know what I'm saying?

[00:10:20]>> Latinos, blacks, poor people, even white poor people have this crabs in the barrel mentality. And everybody want to be like, I'm the one.

[00:10:30]>> Mhm. [clears throat] >> Not knowing that you greater with a team of people winning. I always love that bar that Jay-Z said, if we fall, we be each other's crutches. Meaning people think they want to be the one instead of having all your friends win. And when some of when we need something or somebody they can actually help us. If you the only guy winning, nobody can help you if you go through something, >> right? I don't know why we we taught ourselves to hate each other and why we hate each other. Like why everybody why we want to hate each other? Why we want to be jealous of each other? Why we want to, you know, Michael Rubin went viral the other day for saying some things that were actually right. He just wasn't the right messenger, >> right?

[00:11:17]>> The messenger was good. The message >> the message was wrong. He wasn't the right messenger. And so, you know, you see, with no disrespect, you see a Jewish guy get in trouble. You don't see the whole entire Jewish community pulling them down and, oh, I want your mother to die and I want and this, >> bro, you just celebrated me two months ago. like what's up? And so we as a community, blacks and Latinos, have to learn to embrace each other, you know, and love each other more. And so, you know, that that that's where I'm at with it. That's where Khaled is at with it.

[00:11:53]That's where we all at with it, where we embrace each other, we love each other, and we uplift everybody, and we try to help as much people as we can come from slavery.

[00:12:03]The man was so wicked that when they freed us a 100 years ago, they created a system that still [ __ ] us in 2024. Do you think how diabolical you got to be to be create laws 100 something years ago when you slaves that affects us right now in 2024? You know the projects, the welfare, that's all a trap.

[00:12:26]>> Mhm.

[00:12:26]>> They made that for temporary. You going through a bad time, go on there for a year.

[00:12:32]>> Not against you. Get yourself ready and go. See me, I think 50 definitely Jay-Z, we all grew up in the projects and in welfare. So the thing your grandmother used to think I only pay $100 rent. I don't want to move. But hey, guess what?

[00:12:48]Now you can't even have a husband in the house because the project say you can't have a husband. So that destroys the family, >> right? Then you're so brilliant. Think of Jay-Z. We look at this guy like billionaire.

[00:13:02]You know, this guy, if he would have played the projects and the welfare [ __ ] we would have never knew how great he was.

[00:13:09]>> Correct.

[00:13:09]>> So they eliminate you as competition in that in the project and welfare system.

[00:13:17]So you got to get yourself up out of that [ __ ] so you could go and get whatever's destined for you. How can the black community and the Latino community, how can we come together?

[00:13:26]Joe, >> you got to realize that we are both oppressed communities, >> we're both going through the same [ __ ] >> When Big Pun made the record boy more than we came out the gate letting everybody know the black and brown unity, but you got guys like Fat Joe who is for black and brown unity as an example. more of us do that together and realize that if we learn how to vote the same way, if we learn how to stand up for each other the same way, we'll be the most powerful uh voice and force in America. And so the politicians and all them will have to listen to us and treat us different. And that's the main thing that people got to really realize. It ain't blacks against Latinos, Latinos against blacks. We supposed to be together. We've always been together.

[00:14:19]Where I'm from, we always been together.

[00:14:22]>> Yeah. We It's not We shouldn't be against each other. We should be against the problem. So, whatever the problem is, >> well, together.

[00:14:29]>> Yes. Us.

[00:14:29]>> We form Voltron, >> right?

[00:14:31]>> And we outnumber everybody else. So, if we all, you know, I always look at that scene um from the movie Malcolm X Spike Lee did >> where he came out to the precinct and he went and everybody turned >> it. What?

[00:14:46]>> Imagine we could do that together.

[00:14:49]>> We'd be the most powerful people in America.

[00:14:51]>> Now, after watching all of that, you can't sit here and say this tension just come out from nowhere. You heard it yourself. People didn't wake up one day and decide to clash. We are taught distance before they even had their first real interaction. Others had to build identity, pride, and survival from the ground up in a system that didn't even want to acknowledge them. So when these two experience meet is not just people is history colliding with conditioning and that's why this feels deeper than just a misunderstanding because now you've got black Americans saying we have been holding this down where was that unity when we needed it and at the same time we've got some Latinos admitting a lot of what we believe didn't even come from experience. That right there, that's the gap. And until that gap is actually addressed, not ignored, not sugarcoated, this tension is going to keep repeating itself in different form, workplaces, communities, online, everywhere. And let's be real, that crap in the barrel moment, that wasn't just about competition. That was about what happens when people feel like there is limited space to win. So instead of building together, they start watching each other, measuring each other, even pulling other down without realizing it.

[00:16:04]But here is the part people don't want to hear. You cannot build real unity on top of unspoken truth. It doesn't work like that. Because the moment people start sharing real experience, like Afro Latinos saying they are too black from one side and not accepted on the other, that breaks the illusion that everything is simple. It forces people to confront what's actually happening beneath the surface. So the question now isn't should there be unity. The question is are people actually willing to be honest enough to build in the right way?

[00:16:34]Because honesty comes with discomfort.

[00:16:36]It comes with accountability. It comes with unlearning things people are raised to believe. And not everybody is ready for that. But one thing is clear after this. This conversation has already started. And once those truths are out, you can't push them back into silence.
