Urban renewal projects, despite being framed as modernization efforts, often destroy thriving minority communities and displace residents, as exemplified by Hayti, North Carolinaโa prosperous Black neighborhood that was demolished by the Durham Freeway in the 1960s, causing lasting economic and cultural damage that never fully recovered.

The Hidden Costs of Urban Renewal Revealed ๐ง #UrbanRenewal #CityPlanningAdded:
There was once a black neighborhood so successful people called it the Black Wall Street of North Carolina.
Its name was Hayti. For decades, Hayti was filled with black-owned businesses, churches, doctors, teachers, restaurants, insurance companies, and families building generational wealth during a time when much of America was still segregated. And that's what makes what happened next so controversial. In the 1960s, officials announced plans for urban renewal and a new highway system.
Residents were told the changes would modernize the city and improve transportation. Then bulldozers arrived.
Homes disappeared. Businesses were demolished. Entire streets were cut apart by the Durham Freeway. Families who had spent generations building the community were displaced while outside developers reshaped the land underneath them. Supporters called it progress.
Critics called it destruction disguised as progress. Because once the neighborhood was fractured, much of the economic and cultural power that made Hayti special never fully recovered. And today, most people driving through Durham have no idea an entire thriving community once existed beneath the concrete around them. Not destroyed by war, not destroyed by disaster, destroyed by planning.
