Using specific, precise verbs instead of the general verb 'go' makes English sound more natural, advanced, and powerful. For example, use 'rush' instead of 'go quickly,' 'stroll' instead of 'go slowly,' 'sneak' instead of 'go secretly,' 'storm' instead of 'go angrily,' and 'drive' or 'fly' instead of 'go by car' or 'go by plane.' This vocabulary upgrade helps learners move beyond intermediate English to sound more fluent and sophisticated.

Stop saying 'GO' – Use these 25 Advanced Verbs Instead!Added:
You want to speak advanced English, but you always use very basic verbs. And one of the most common verbs that English learners use all the time is go. Go, go, go, go, go, go, go. Now, okay, of course go is correct, but it's very general.
And if you want to sound more natural, more precise, more advanced in English, it's much better to use a more powerful verb that describes exactly how the going actually happens. And that's exactly what I'm going to teach you in today's lesson. Instead of just saying go for everything, I want you to use one of these more expressive and precise verbs that's going to make your English sound so much more advanced. Are you ready?
I've got 25 verbs for you in this lesson. 25? 25 ways to avoid the word go? That's crazy. But that's not all, because I've got another 25 for you, which I'm not going to mention in this video, which you can get in that PDF.
So, that free PDF comes with everything I'm going to teach you in today's lesson and an extra 25, so 50 verbs in total that you can use to avoid the word go and sound fantastic in English. It also comes with a test, so you can practice and really remember these verbs. Okay, so we're going to divide this lesson into a few categories.
Uh we're going to look at some verbs that you can use when you go quickly, go slowly, go somewhere secretly, leave a place, move in a specific direction, travel, okay, and a few more.
>> [snorts] >> So, let's get started. So, instead of saying go quickly, you can say rush.
Okay, I rushed to the station because I was late. Instead of saying go very quickly, you could also say dash. She dashed across the street. Okay, she went across the street very quickly.
Now, if someone goes somewhere very quickly because they're competing, you can say race. And this doesn't have to be in a formal race or a competition where with a medal at the end. It could just be like the children raced to the playground. Okay, they were all very excited. They wanted to arrive to the playground as soon as possible before their friends, so they raced to the playground. Now, instead of saying the opposite, go slowly, you can use many options. Uh stroll is one of them. We strolled through the park after dinner.
My dad often says, "I'm just going for a quick stroll instead of a quick walk."
Okay, to stroll. Or you can use this as a noun as well, a stroll. I'm going for a stroll. And it normally means an enjoyable, calm, relaxed walk.
Another great verb is to wander. And this means when you go somewhere without a clear destination.
I love doing this on holiday. I just love going to cities that I don't really know very well and just wander. Just get lost. Wander around the old town. Just look around.
I'm not going anywhere specific. I'm just wandering.
And now, another nice verb is amble.
Amble. He ambled down the street enjoying the sunshine. And this This means to go very, very, very slowly. Yeah, very slowly. He ambled down the street. Okay, let's have a look at some secret ways that you can go. Instead of saying go out quietly, you could say sneak out.
Okay, so the kids sneaked out of the house after their parents went to bed.
Okay, they went out very quietly so that they didn't wake their parents up.
Another verb you can use is to slip out. He slipped out of the meeting before it finished. Okay, very, very quietly. Not secretly. People saw him.
Some people saw him. He didn't make a big thing of it. He was as quiet as possible so as few people as possible realized that he left the meeting before it finished.
Okay, remember you can download the PDF with all today's verbs plus another 25 that I'm not going to mention in this lesson. There are more verbs for each of the categories that I'm going to explain and teach you in this lesson. And they're all really going to help you speak English in a much more precise and powerful way. And it's free. Okay, so you can scan the code there or click the link in the description and I will send it to you via email immediately. Okay, let's have a look at the next category.
Instead of saying go away, you can just say leave. We left the restaurant at midnight.
And a more formal word for leave is depart. We use this for transport very often. The train departs at 9:00.
And when you go to the airport, you will see departures. The plane departs at whatever time.
Now, if someone leaves very quickly because of danger, you can say flee.
Flee. The past of flee is fled. The thief fled the scene. A lot of people flee their country if there is a war there. Okay, they leave as quickly as possible because of danger. Okay, so instead of saying go inside, you can say enter. She entered the room quietly.
Instead of saying go out, you can say exit.
Please exit through the door. And both of these are more formal ways of saying go in and go out. So, you will see them in formal situations. And when I'm talking about a formal situation, I'm not talking about a performance review with your boss. I'm talking about signs in the cinema or instructions in an airplane. Hey, if you you're enjoying this video, please subscribe. I have plenty more videos like this for you and I would really appreciate you clicking the subscribe button. All right, let's talk about movement, shall we?
Instead of saying go up, you can say climb. So, don't say they they went up the mountain, you can say they climbed the mountain. And the opposite, instead of saying go down, you can say descend.
Like the plane began to descend.
If you go across something, you can use the verb cross.
She crossed the road carefully.
Okay, so that was more related to movement. Let's have a look at position now, because instead of saying go behind someone, you can say follow. He followed me into the shop.
And if someone goes after someone quickly, you can say chase. Like the dog chased the ball.
Okay, instead of saying go back, you can say return.
Like we returned home late. I return to England twice a year.
And when you reach a place, you can say arrive. Okay, we arrived at the airport.
Okay, so instead of we went to the airport, we can say we arrived at the airport. Okay, let's talk about casual movement now. And my favorite one is coming soon.
Instead of saying go somewhere in a very casual, informal way, you can say head to somewhere. We headed to the beach after lunch.
And if you visit somewhere very, very briefly, just for a short, casual, informal moment, we use this one. This is my favorite.
Pop. Okay, pop like pop into the shop or pop to the shop.
Basically, the word pop can replace the word go for an informal, casual little visit. I popped into the shop to buy some milk. I popped to my friend's house to say hello. He said, "Hey, pop in."
And you can also use the phrasal verb drop by. It has the same effect. It's a very casual, informal visit. For example, I'll drop by your office tomorrow. In other words, I'm in that part of town anyway, so I'll just make a quick visit to your office while I'm there. I'll drop by tomorrow. Okay, let's bring some emotion to the way that you go somewhere.
Instead Instead go somewhere angrily."
you could say, "Storm."
Okay? And if you leave the room in that particular angry way, you storm out.
Okay? Storm, like thunder and lightning.
Storm. She stormed out of the room. Like someone walks heavily and bangs their feet on the floor because they're angry, you can say, "Stomp." as well. Stomp. He stomped upstairs. If you have children and stairs, I'm sure you have heard your child stomp up the stairs angrily.
Or if you have been a kid, >> [laughter] >> if you've been a kid and you had stairs as a kid, I'm sure you stomped upstairs at some point in your teenage years, too. Okay, now when we're talking about travel, we tend to avoid the verb go and be a little bit more specific. So, instead of saying, "Go somewhere by car."
we normally say, "Drive." I drove to Madrid last weekend.
Instead of saying, "Go by plane."
we normally say, "Fly." Like, "We flew to London."
And there are plenty more that I mention in the PDF.
Okay, so basically the idea is simple.
Yes, you can say go for everything, but your English will remain at a intermediate level and sound quite basic.
Effective, but basic.
But if you use more powerful, more advanced, more precise verbs, like the ones that we've looked at in today's lesson, instead of go quickly, rush.
Instead of go slowly, stroll. Instead of go secretly, sneak. Instead of go angrily, storm. Then this is the kind of vocabulary that helps your English sound much more natural, much more advanced, and much more powerful. It's exactly the type of vocabulary that I want my advanced learners inside my Daily Quick Fix membership to learn.
If you want to improve your English to an advanced level, and if you want to just focus on a little bit of English, like 10, 15 minutes every day, then check out Daily Quick Fix. It might be a great choice for you.
Okay, for now, leave a comment using one of the verbs from today's video, so you can use it. For example, "I rushed to work today. We strolled through the park yesterday evening."
Write your sentence in the comments. I would love to see them. And then watch that video next because that video will help you avoid another very basic word, very. All right, I'll see you there. Oh, and remember to subscribe. Thank you very much. Bye for now.
