Old Words I Remember Hearing Growing Up | Appalachian Dialect

[00:00:00]Have you ever heard anyone, Kyle, store-bought bread, anything other than just like store-bought or a loaf of bread?

[00:00:07]>> Here in the Appalachian Mountains, I've heard lots of really unique-sounding words and phrases. In today's video, I want to talk about that one and a couple more that I heard while I was growing up here.

[00:00:18]>> And while I was doing that, I thought I'd go ahead and make some refrigerator pickles.

[00:00:24]Refrigerator pickles are just um canned pickles that don't go through like the canning process of heating everything.

[00:00:32]These, you just make the brine, put them in a jar, and then put them in the fridge, where they'll keep for a couple weeks. Um they're a lot easier, and they taste a lot better than the store-bought. As I'm going over these words, let me know down in the comments if you also heard them wherever you grew up.

[00:01:07]We always called that light bread, like l i g h t, light bread. For the next word I want to cover, let me know what you all call sweet carbonated beverages wherever you grew up. Um this one really depends on where you grew up and who you grew up around. Um I know a lot of folks will have different answers for this one. Um over on Facebook when I covered it, this is one of my more popular videos. So, I'll be really excited to read through your comments on this one, especially finding out um what you call it based on where you grew up. While I give you just a few seconds to go ahead and guess on what I might say to you, um because I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of southeastern Kentucky, um I'm going to go ahead and put this brine in and let it cook down Um so that I can get these pickles ready. For this pickle brine, I'm doing something really simple on this one. I'm just doing 1 and 1/2 cups of vinegar with equal parts, 1 and 1/2 cups of water.

[00:02:17]Try not to spill the water like I did.

[00:02:19]Next, I'm going to do 2 Tbsp of sugar.

[00:02:23]I like it kind of sweet.

[00:02:25]And then finally, 1 Tbsp of salt.

[00:02:32]And you just let that cook down. Let the sugar and the salt dissolve. We got these cucumbers out of my little garden and I thought it'd be good to use today to try to make my own pickles.

[00:02:43]Um some people will put more flavors in there if you want. You can put garlic, onions, other seasoning.

[00:02:52]Um for today's, I'm just actually going to use um dill weed cuz I don't have any fresh dill. That would be best. And salt, sugar, and that's it. Going to just make a real simple recipe for these um refrigerator pickles. So, I'll go ahead and get these cut up and get it ready for that brine when it's done. It won't take that brine long at all.

[00:03:18]So, carbonated beverages, um growing up here in the Appalachian Mountains, we always called carbonated beverages pop. Now, the thing is, pop normally is most associated with folks who live in the Midwest. So, this is one area where we actually differ just a little bit from folks who live in the South and other parts of the Appalachian Mountains. But I know in my little part um of Southeastern Kentucky, most folks here will call carbonated beverages, they call those pops. So, if you're asking someone if they want something to drink, you might would say, "Would you like a pop to drink?" And then your next question would be, "What kind? Mountain Dew, Coke, Pepsi, or whatever."

[00:04:09]I like a crisp pickle better than a soggy pickle.

[00:04:12]Um I know some folks may be different.

[00:04:14]Let me know down in the comments if y'all like your uh pickle super crisp like me. All right, so another word that I heard while I grew up that a lot of folks that I've talked to who live outside the area where I'm from had never heard.

[00:04:29]And for this one, go ahead and let me know, do you all have any other way to say you have a sprained ankle or you sprained your ankle other than just saying, "I sprained my ankle."

[00:04:42]I know when I was younger, I loved to play basketball. Me and my friend Dusty would play from daylight to dark pretty much. Um we had a a old ball goal on uh just a dirt court.

[00:04:56]We had it wore down pretty good to where um it was just packed compacted dirt. So, it worked really well. Um we played on it that much. I know a lot of you probably kind of grew up having the same type of basketball courts I did. Um we didn't have a lot of concrete or or uh blacktop. We just had good old dirt to play in.

[00:05:21]But uh more than one occasion, we would injure our ankle. And whenever we hurt our ankle, we would call it this word.

[00:05:30]I thought I had this jar packed pretty tightly, but then I turned it over and look.

[00:05:36]There's a huge gap right here.

[00:05:38]I did a bad job. Um one of those um cucumbers kind of went side goggling on me and I didn't notice, but no real harm here. We just won't have as many pickles as I could get in this if I packed it a little more tightly.

[00:05:52]All right. So, like I said, I didn't have any fresh dill, so I just have dill weed. I'm going to put 1 tsp in the jar.

[00:05:58]And once that brine cools off, I will just put the brine in the jar, put the jar in the fridge, wait about 24 hours, and they'll be ready to eat and should taste pretty good. Back to spraining your ankle. So, the word I used to say I sprained my ankle when I was growing up here is creald. Like for example, if I was playing basketball, I fell because I twisted my ankle, I would immediately grab my ankle and say, "I creald my ankle." When I covered this over on TikTok, I know there were not a lot of folks who said they said that. Um so, this one might be kind of unique to my little area here. So, I'm curious to find out if anyone also heard folks say, "creald your ankle" instead of saying "sprained your ankle." [00:07:13]So, have you all ever heard anyone say that they were dizzy without just saying the word dizzy? This will be another one where um I'll be curious if you all say it, too. Um there's actually kind of two variations of it that I can remember my dad saying while I was growing up. I can remember dad having issues like with vertigo and he would get really dizzy.

[00:07:34]And instead of saying that he felt dizzy, he usually used one of these two words. While you're taking a guess, I just wanted to show you my completed refrigerator pickles. Super easy process. Um the next time I'm going to make sure that um I get these in a little tighter, so I can uh just get more done and not waste that liquid and that brine.

[00:07:57]Um So, the process on these, as I understand, is that I'll put these in the refrigerator, and the longer they stay in the refrigerator, the more flavor will be infused into the cucumber or the pickle now. And um these, like I said in the first of the video, these are not like airtight sealed like it would if you were doing a traditional canning. So, these are not going to last months and months and months, but because there's so much vinegar and salt, um they should last in your refrigerator a few weeks at least.

[00:08:32]Um if you don't eat them first. I don't think there's no chance that this is going to go a few weeks because I'm going to eat them all.

[00:08:41]Um but we'll find out. So, go ahead and let me know down in the comments if you've ever tried refrigerator pickles. Um super easy to do.

[00:08:51]Um you all have to let me know if you try it and maybe what spices you used in your pickles. So, for being dizzy, instead of saying I feel a little dizzy or even light-headed, um that would be another word for it. Dad would say, "I feel swimmy-headed."

[00:09:09]Or he would say, "I feel woozy."

[00:09:12]So, swimmy-headed and woozy. Those were kind of his two go-to ways of describing how he felt when he felt dizzy.
