Loads of people have asked us to do Townill for months and month well years now and we finally got the perfect man to walk us around. Everyone knows him around here. Look. So, uh yeah. So, tell us where are we now? What's outside the Fairfield Social Club? This was probably the central place of Town all years ago. Yeah.
>> Um my my all my family drunk. My family run the place. Um my auntie John as far back as I was 14 run the Fairfield.
Busiest pub I've ever seen until recent years. Obviously with everything going on with the government because everyone's skimped. It's had to shut unfortunately and it's the only pub in Townill >> and and really.
>> Yeah. So wait, this is one of the biggest council estates. Give us a little run through about Townill.
>> Townill male go probably one of the biggest councils in Wales. Um and this was the only pub in Townill. We used to have the rum and punch but it's now houses. That was when I was a kid. Uh we used to have the Mountain Dew. It's now a shop. That was the Mount Pleasant. I think the only other pub around it now is a carpet in which is not really in Townill but yeah this is the only >> they have like a rugby club like a social >> used to have a football club you called West End um they run from Mount Pleasant now but they've always been run from Townill um yeah they run from a farmers I think now um we had another team up here called Rosill which are close to my heart because they they uh they support autism so they're fantastic football team but yeah West End run from here for years and years and years mate >> and this is the uh was this part of the beer garden as well or Was it?
>> Oh, this this was this was all looked after. I mean, it's all overgrown and uh messy now, but uh my uncle and auntie was the last ones to run it and he done a fantastic job. Done everything up for the locals. It's just he didn't have the support.
>> It's a big building. So, this would have been the front of the pub. I >> This would have been the entrance.
>> These windows the same. Were they changed?
>> The same. That was a lounge.
>> Glazed windows. That's mad.
>> Got to win down.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. But upstairs room I won't use much. I used to play snooker for the snooker team >> and um my you know got good memories of snooker team was my best mate there who's playing me passed away you know >> but uh yeah good memories really good memories of fair >> and and this went up was this all part of it as well there was um I think my my cousin still uses a buildingard but this used to be the local bookies some years ago it was what was it >> lad Brooks >> it was a lads was it >> yeah but as you can see it's all run down up yeah >> it's sad it's sad mate cuz >> that's massive.
>> Town got a bad name in it and like any other council state. We've got drug problems, whatever. We got loads of problems here. But we also got a massive community structure.
>> Yeah.
>> Everyone knows each other. No one lets anyone go without. It's it's a Growing up here was fantastic to be honest.
>> Well, when I speak to people uh who have either lived here or people from Cardiff who have visited here and whatever, they they always kind of put it to sim similarities to like Elely. Yeah. Yeah.
As a as a council estate, a community got a reputation, but >> the community aspect, >> it's a hell of a community. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> I mean, um, we got Mr. Henry's Horses down here. He been here years and years >> and I mean years.
>> What is it? Mr. Henry.
>> Mr. Henry's horses. Yeah. He's he just wal past us. A lovely guy. And he's down here every day. He He must be getting on now as well. Love him.
>> It's uh >> So you I'm also brilliant.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. So what you know looking back over there like up the hill I could see an industrial estate a retail estate >> that's come here you got McDonald's Mland B&M stuff over there >> and is Townill over there as well or is Townill this way >> right Townill ends in a go so literally it comes all the way around mail down there and you got right up the top it's huge mill massive >> so we'll be doing a bit of walking a bit of driving a bit you can see how big the fairfield was that was >> that was like the social >> yeah that was the conal that was that's where all the all the gigs were in the bingo. The bar was upstairs.
>> What a unique building.
>> And um to be honest with you, it's sad to see it like I guess cuz uh my father owned it for a while when I was running it.
>> And then um obviously my whole family have my aunties, my uncles, my father.
>> So you lived in the pub life and then >> Yeah. Yeah. It was it when I was running it, mate, it was it was well, let's just say it was an experience.
>> Was it?
>> I would never run a pub again. Put that way.
>> Yeah. Well, you can look after yourself in you. You got to be a bit tough as well, haven't you? And take no [ __ ] I >> to be honest, I'm town. You either fight or go down a bad route. Um like I I started judo eight because my father was a judo man. I I I do a samurai and I started boxing in about 15. Yeah. Same as John Phillips, you know. We would all been rogues if you had if you haven't found fighting spots.
>> Would you say Town is a very like a fighting area then?
>> 100%. Yeah. There there's there's guys up here. You know, my old man's well known. My uncle [ __ ] hell. Um there's loads and I can I could name a list up here, mate.
>> Yeah.
>> All well known men from Swansea like Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> And tough area, mate. Tough area.
>> I I've never seen a pub like it to be honest. Just the way it's kind of >> It's massive, mate. It is huge, >> you know. And this would all be open this part then.
>> All this was clear, mate. Yeah. It was uh all this is just overgrown now. All >> rubbish and [ __ ] Just people chucking stuff down here.
>> Are they going to do anything with this like what you you know, >> I [ __ ] I hope they open it back up to be honest with you. But uh >> and have you had that with others in the community who have talked about >> it's very close to me because my nana and B used to come here with me and uh I got really good me there is it. Yeah.
Yeah. And um since I closed, have you seen a notice of the community change at all? Cuz places like this are hubs, isn't they?
>> The thing was, right, I think town now people are struggling so much the prices have gone up on everything. It's cheaper from drinking the house.
>> Yeah.
>> So they don't wise you come.
>> That's the problem. I mean, it's >> it's mental, >> you know, if uh if you don't speak to people >> like they they say, don't they? Some people think it's by design. Yeah.
>> So, who is it?
>> Some people think it's by design, don't they, D? They think like >> cuz this is where communities would go to talk about their problems and, you know, how they can solve things in the community.
>> It's like that. It was like a the fair few was like a place to go to escape everything. Um, you know, we'd have lads up there. We'd have lockins, you know.
>> Yeah.
>> I won't say too much about the lockage.
I'm drunk for 10 years, but I used to join them. Yeah. But the lock ends and stuff, you know, we had some we had some good times. Really good times in it.
>> Yeah. Good memories. I got a lady loads in the Catholic church.
>> So, is it is it a Catholic area town or?
>> Um yeah, my my nan was a Catholic. Um not not really Catholic area, but uh our Lady Lord's a Catholic church.
>> What was what's the what is like the um demographic? Cuz like when I done Brin Melon, there was a lot of Irish.
>> Uh yeah, to be honest, a lot of Jacks up here.
>> Proper Jacks. Yeah. You know, we we got a mixed community. We got Romanians, Polish. Um I got on my haircut with Nemat. He's from uh I think he's from Albania.
>> At the minute, this is it's a mix up here. But uh yeah, >> this is Town Road.
>> But you never ever see any trouble up your off anyone like that.
>> It's nice to see all the flags as well.
>> Yeah, down at one point.
>> What's that? The council or something?
>> Yeah, the council. Sad really, but that's a different different topic, isn't it?
>> So, what's that? That's what's it called? the community. Our Lady of Lords.
>> Our Lady of Lords Catholic Community.
It's quite a big church, isn't it? Yeah.
My nana had a service. Love her.
>> And you have some spectacular views up there. Panty Shell is probably the best views you ever see.
>> What's What's that? Is this >> down down the hill by here? Turn right and you can see all Swansea Bay.
>> Look. Wow.

>> Panty Shell. Best views in Swansea in my opinion.

And this is like uh would you say this is like for reference this is like kind of the center of the town this >> probably this is probably more center part of this park's probably the center the Phoenix center that's what the kids go now know um Phoenix center was built when I was about 10 11 year old >> so I I remember the Phoenix center brilliant the lovely cafe up there community calf and they do everything up to help the community it's fantastic >> oh we can have a little look up there >> yeah we got tri after >> and um what is the difference between townill and Mayill are they the cuz they got different names. I think >> I'll be honest. The only difference is it's about half mile road.
>> It's just the location.
>> That's it. In my old town, middle town go town.
>> Well, I I I live in uh I'm from Fairwell. I'm from Pentraine. Yeah.
>> But Pentraine and Fairwater, same area.
Elephants, weren't they? Um that that was down mail by Ricky Owen and uh the Owens. That was by on Wingman Hill.
>> What what was that over? Did you do you remember or >> um to be honest it was over nothing much and to be honest you it was quite shameful to be honest you because we never had nothing like that in town and they gave us even a worse name than what we had.

>> Um and the guys who was involved in it got no times on them at all to be honest with you.

>> For no reason. They tortured them down there. They did. I just saw that [ __ ] car go down here and I thought that's [ __ ] D.

So um what would you say you know in terms of the way it is now it's a council estate so it's got it problems >> it's council and same as every other count state it's it's got it problems but the thing is with town of mail go I grew up here from young I only recently moved out here um due to circumstances I absolutely love the place my family from here my nana and ber grew up here all my family grew up up here you know what I mean it's it's [ __ ] fantastic up here >> it's fantastic >> it got a bad name for reasons, don't get me wrong, but uh >> but Town like you know like you look at like um you look at Dati Flat and Binme Melon, you look at Penland and >> but Townill uh it's it's one of those ones that's had a reputation for long time ago as well like it >> at one point Town it was on TV for the worst car theft and I was like Manchester Town Swansea Liverpool and we were up there with them and >> it was a place of full of joy riders.
Well, I grew up watching Joy Riders made that that was our entertainment when I was a kid.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. But uh Yeah. But as I said, everyone got bad things, but the community second. It's fantastic.
>> So, what are these the uh >> the stores? Yeah. This is the old Abdullah store. I think he still owns it to be honest you.
>> This should be This used to be Chicken on Hill. One of the probably the best kebab shops ever, >> but now it's called Up in Smoke.
>> Oh, okay. Okay.
>> I don't know who owns that now.
>> I got to be fair. Swansea uh Swansea is our life for food.
>> Yeah.
>> You know, I I'd say it's better than Canada, you know, controversial, but >> some some of the food is lovely. I mean, you got a sandwich box where I've been here for years.
>> Another good place for food.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Dresses.
>> Yeah. Got the ladies in there getting their perms then.
>> Yeah. Sandwich box been there for years.
>> Fair play. And would you say the community of Ton Hill have uh kind of stayed the same? Like you said, you've got like your Polish in you and whatever, but it it have changed.
>> It's kind of stayed the same. Not many people get out or >> The community have changed a bit. Um it's gone a little bit worse than what it was years and years ago.
>> Yeah.
>> But uh it's still it's still a community, but I mean you still see people help each other.
>> Well, it's like we're we're battling against it though, aren't we? You know, pubs are shut in, pubs are shut in, >> pubs are shut in, shops are shut in. And you go Swany City Center, mate. Well, you've been in Berlin. Do you mean shops are shut?
>> This is [ __ ] so sad, man. I mean B man used to have like couple of the best pubs as >> and they shut all gone and Colin Breen used to run a pub down there. [ __ ] brilliant pub.
>> What do you expect communities to do?
Boredom is a is a factor of drug use.
>> This is crazy, mate. But wait, you see these views on your >> I'm looking at them now.
>> My auntie lives there and the views they got is [ __ ] unbelievable >> from my front garden.

>> That's Swansea Pier down there. Swansea Bay. Yeah.

>> And then you got the Swan's only skyscraper we call it.

>> You got Swansea prison down there. I went there a few times. is a pool bastard pull up with me when I was a kid.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Talk to me about your your you know upbringing it and >> um when I was younger I um I used to do MMA for a hobby more or less. I used to get drunk. I used to have fights. I didn't used to start them but I couldn't walk away from them.
>> Yeah.
>> And I wasted a lot of time in Nick. So youngsters out there don't start fights thinking you're big because it's a waste of time.
>> Get in the gym and start training and go and fight properly.
>> And was that was that just cuz you liked fighting or going up? just a nuisance on drink. Yeah. Um I was brought up around fighting all my life, you know. My my father um even my mother's a tough bastard, but uh yeah. Um my family, all my family are fighters, so we got brought up around it. You know what I mean? Yeah.
>> My B was probably one of the hardest men I knew.
>> So yeah, but yeah, it's it's fantastic up there. I I love it up here. People Some people slag it off, but Town's Town, >> mate. I think this, you know, for views as well, like the location, it makes sense, isn't it? You're on the hill and you see all of the town.
>> I mean, when you come by now, you'll see one.

>> Look at that. Uh what's that right there? Saint >> St. Thomas.

>> Which is like the uh the equivalent for people don't know. It's the equivalent to like Cardiff do really.

>> I was as a kid, but uh I had a tattoo when I was 15. Look, I tried to have it covered.

>> No, I won I won a massive swans. I was a Manchester. I still a Manchester United fan. I got to go mate.
>> But um I used to wor on the vet all the time.
>> Did you uh love the violence side of it as well?

And when did you realize that you were to you've done the BKB now like Yeah.
Well respected. I tend really like Yeah.
But did you uh just a fat kid from town?
Yeah.
>> Did you do any of the boxing like when you were younger?
>> Um I had 14 amateur fights. Um I I was a judo boy. I was uh my father didn't like boxing by Rebel 11. I was 15 boxing. I lost my first four, believe it or not.
But then I I knocked the guy out and I won 10 I think nine in a row then. So yeah, I done a little bit of box. I was younger. I done MMA then with my mate John.
>> Yeah.
>> Um he went on to UFC, John did, but I used to take training as a joke. I I when I was younger, it was just I was just stupid.
>> Yeah.
>> I mean, the discipline is there.
>> The discipline's there now in the last 5 years, but when I was younger, it wasn't like >> And And do you think that if it was there back then, you'd be a better fighter than you are now? Or do you think this is all about timing?
>> It's 50/50. I always look a glass half full.
>> Yeah.
>> So like now I'm old, I got the experience.
>> I've experienced life.
>> Yeah. Um, I know what I like and what I don't like and what's good through, what's not good through.
>> Yeah.
>> And like, but when I was younger, I just thought I knew [ __ ] everything to be honest. A bit of a dick like Yeah.
>> Well, you're certainly uh you're certainly an inspiration to people who who do feel like it's too late, isn't it? Because >> Yeah. It's never too late. Never ever too late. And where like where I don't know exactly like how how the BKB works in terms of like championships and that like but um like where are you on that like or you just doing it for the >> I've been with BKB now 10 years next year.
>> Yeah.
>> Um I've won a world championship twice for them.
>> Yeah.
>> I won a British title three times with him >> and it all started believe it or not. My son was born with autism. He's really autistic.
>> Yeah.
>> I used to have one fight to raise awareness for it.
>> Um I fought a guy named Peter Radford at heavyweight. I was a fat kid from Townill in the ring. I knocked him out.
It just rolled on from there then.
>> Wow.
>> Yeah.
>> And how old your son now?
>> My son's 12 this year now. Time flies.
>> My daughter just left school.
>> Yeah.
>> Unbelievable.
>> Yeah.
>> We've uh like obviously me and Mark, the the Vortex boys, we've uh built a a sensory room in open >> and we're asking you to come and open it for us, mate. Cuz um >> cuz there's nothing like that in Wales, mate.

Well, we um I'm going to meet Advocates and Angels at a charity uh in Cockit.

>> Been doing a bit of work with them.

>> We're going to go and see them. Well, after this film, I'm going to go and see them cuz they did come to show me. I think it is in town. There's like a leisure center.
>> Is that And there's like a pharmacy in there, but there's a sensory room in there.

>> She she showed me that the other week, but she said like this is probably the best one so far that we have. When they looked at our one, they said this is the best one we've seen. Like >> this snow can this is this is this is May Hill now. Casters, >> right? See? See?

>> And the best thing was I you know the ghost boys. Town boys. Never used to argue with the Penland boys. I said Thomas boys. And >> I was going to say what was your who were your rivals?
>> Penland mostly. Used to meet in creds and have a fight.

>> Yeah. But uh >> and what do you think of Penland?
>> No. Oh, I got loads of friends up there.
Probably probably more friends up there, don't you?
>> Yeah. You you grow old and you just realize like [ __ ] there's just chaos in your head. You know what I mean?

>> But it's it's mad though, is it? Because uh the gen as generations go on like I used when my dad and I used to say like um ah this generation I always be like grow up your old fat. Let them be [ __ ] young. But I truly believe that this generation that's around now, this social media generation, they are a different breed. They don't give a [ __ ] >> I watched a video earlier on um to talk to the subject, but 8-y old woman trying to walk up the stairs and a guy blocked her. He's about 18. [ __ ] it.
>> And he was telling her to go around him and and the stairs everyone's walking up, not down. Go around me. [ __ ] I got bad legs. I'm 80. I don't care. He said, "Go around me." And that's a gener, you know what I mean? If I done younger, my father smack me on the head.
>> Show them respect. Like, >> I'm right. Where is your [ __ ] video?
>> And that's what there's no consequences no more. That's that's the word I'm looking for.

>> There is nice crime down here, mate. But not as bad as like I worked in London for a year and we saw crime reports. in Mayfair, mate. The process part of London, 27 stabbings a week. [ __ ] >> I mean, it's uh >> crazy. Down there. There's a black road.
I used to walk this a lot.
>> What's it called?
>> The black road. The black lane or whatever else calls it. My mother used to live at the bottom of there. And my mother far got divorced.
>> Did you ever drive down here is always blocked off?
>> Um to be honest, man, probably the only town boy ever drove a bike.
>> You don't like them?
>> And my grandpa drummed in. He uh he had an accident with someone on a bike and they passed away and he dr never to have one. So it's >> though is big on bikes are >> massive bikes and horses.

>> Like blind mice. Exactly like blind mice. Yeah.

>> Yeah. Swans like that. Is it >> like in when we go around here now is um daddy Martin land grab a bit of land and you got if it's still there you got chickens horses and stuff in it.

>> This is C view school. The old male school.
>> C view this one. Collins used to get bombed all the time because it's round.

>> And the Germans used to think it was a fort. used to drop bombs into >> Swansea was the the heaviest bomb, weren't they?
>> Yeah, Ty Ty Cres was absolutely flattened.
>> That was rebuilt. Um >> I believe that uh and >> I believe that's why there's lots of like a swans you got more tower blocks and guard it.

>> And I think that is from the how much it was bombed.

So what is it? This is the school year, is it?
>> This is a C view school. It says Yeah.
This was on the paper not so long ago.
It was um like Islam. Islam went in there to teach them about religion.

We run activities for young people. It's kind of the meeting place for the kids.

Trust me, she's playing it down a lot by >> we are proud of one another. We >> No, >> why is it why is why is it like that in life in it? Like you could be doing something positive every single day.
It's the same as when like say like you do say like I know you do a post now about your autism or about your next fight. You'll have 99 999 likes and you'll have one negative like.

We run warm spaces as well. So, so the winter time you offer a warm space from January to March where people can eat and drink for free.

So it's that for me I that's what I would be doing is looking on how we can uh shape things for young people, but the young people have to be involved in that. You can't tell kids what they need and what they want. You need to listen to them, >> you know, and and do it their way then.

25 years you've been here now and when it was first built locally residents said that it wouldn't last a 12 month that it'd be vandalized that it'd be ruined but I mean if you give the kids ownership of something they own that and they look after it >> they look after it don't they give them responsibility in it it's like um I'm a former drug addict and okay not everyone's the same but like um when I when I started working as a volunteer they gave me a laptop a phone and and and people were like oh they would have [ __ ] sold her I was like no the responsibility they gave me in trust made me want to not [ __ ] it up like you know >> I we had a kid um Max his name was and he was causing [ __ ] up here on a Friday night right all lots of trouble all was out you give him a job in the cafe and you got to go that sense important Saturday morning then when the kids had made a mess max had to come clean you know so it's it's about that it's about giving them ownership but also acknowledging that kids will be kids and they need space and they need time to rebel slightly.
They need boundaries and I mean they're in the safest place to do it.

And it's the same with uh I was in Trier but the other day and he said the one kid said, "Look, we got our football club." He said, "But if if you don't like football or you're not good at it, you got [ __ ] all else. It's about finding those options."

Um you had Ricky Owen used to box with Gwent. He he was undefeated professional boxer.

>> Uh well, John Phillips used to box with Gwent. He was in the UFC. um multiple world champions in different promotions.
You know, he's showing kids up here. You can make something yourself. You had Ricky Owen, Pro Box, undefeated. He retired undefeated. Just you just don't get the support in Wales and especially if you're from the council states, Townill, Swansea. They just don't support you. And um this is crazy.

There used to be a library at it.

But this place, I'm not just saying it.
It saved a lot of kids. It have saved a lot of kids from crime, from drugs.
Terry Gray runs it. I was about to say and who the guys >> Terry Gray, Patty Simmons, uh is loads. I mean, Auntie Ka, Kevin Cullen, the year now and uh they've saved a lot of kids like Terry Gray, you [ __ ] saved loads.

It's only the last 10 years I really read the Bible properly and stuff. And if you're reading it, >> you can you can judge it to your life. >> What I if someone asked me why I believe them I always say it's better to have faith than no faith and like what I mean by that is if you think there's something afterlife let them think there's something after life. If you don't want to think there's nothing after life you got nothing to look forward to have you. So, you're just living a dead life at that point.
