[00:00:08]Today we are going to go over the vowels in the Danish alphabet.

[00:00:13]Now we have gone over all the letters before in a previous lesson, but the vowels are a bit tricky and they deserve a bit more explanation.

[00:00:26]So let's get started. Let's grab a piece of paper and a pencil, put on some glasses, and we will start writing.

[00:00:40]And the first vowel of the Danish alphabet is of course an A. An a.

[00:00:51]We pronounce it a A.

[00:00:56]And sometimes a is pronounced a and sometimes it is pronounced a a and then again sometimes it is a long a as in a monkey or a short a as in n duck.

[00:01:22]So first we will write a a monkey.

[00:01:29]A B E A. Yes.

[00:01:35]And then N duck. That means duck.

[00:01:42]Yeah. A N D N.

[00:01:49]And next we are going to write apple scene. Apple scene which means an orange. Orange. Not the color but the fruit. An orange. Yes. So here, as you can probably tell, the A is pronounced A. A. A P p E L S I N app.

[00:02:23]And again it is a short A. Usually when a vowel is followed by two consonants it becomes short.

[00:02:36]We see that in many many words.

[00:02:40]And next let's write anal. Analoose which means different different anal.

[00:03:06]So a monkey n duck apple scene apple scene orange fruit and analysis different different yes and let's see and now let's take a few words where we have a inside the words not as a beginning letter but inside the words.

[00:03:46]First word cats. Cats where the A is short.

[00:03:53]K A T. Cats. Cat. It means a cat.

[00:04:01]And then men. Men means man.

[00:04:08]M also a short uh A. Usually when the A is followed by N D N D anal then it becomes short as well as followed by two of the same consonants PP for example in apple scene men and here the D becomes silent. So m a n d means man. Man you say it actually you in English you use a long a long a man. We we just say men short a short a men because it is followed by n d. Yes.

[00:05:02]So next tay to take to take tay t a g e at t um at in cup to take a cup of coffee at in yeah in to take a day off. A t in.

[00:05:36]And here again, as you can tell, the a becomes long a t, not short like in men. Men t.

[00:05:53]And next we have fa fa fa which means father. Father f a r fa again along al a long a fa fa father father. Yeah.

[00:06:19]Yes. So now we can of course come up with countless examples but for now let's move on to the next vowel which is e and e is the most unstable vowel in the Danish alphabet which means it changes sound from it can take shape shape like any other vowel in the alphabet almost.

[00:07:00]So how we say e is e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e but when put into words that is where it gets complicated.

[00:07:11]So first word is ilk which means love to love at at ilk to love.

[00:07:24]Now this time in this word the e is pronounced as a a you know a is it's the third last third third to the last um letter in the alphabet the A.

[00:07:48]This is what the A looks like. We will get we will get to that. But yes, in the word ilka, the e sounds like e, which is which it often does in in the Danish language.

[00:34:14]And next we'll take a few where the oo is inside the words and not as the front letter. So the first one is who's whose where the u the oo is long but pronounced as oo who's it means house.

[00:56:38]And here we can tell that the U sounds a bit different.

[00:56:45]So it can be pronounced S S as in or as or like in S. Sum, which means needles like needles you Yeah. needles.

[00:57:12]So, not needles as in you sew with, but the ones that you bang into the wall to hang up your pictures or to build with, build something with.

[00:57:25]So, yeah, you only have one word for that in English.

[00:57:31]That covers two things.

[00:57:33]Okay. Uh so correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that it's it's both called needles and needles.

[01:03:33]Where again u is pronounced u u s e danish girl name woman's name girl's name good and I think we are just done for today oh no we need some variations with inside the words and there are many it is Usually the vowels are in inside words and not used at as the front letter.

[01:04:20]Bull or out in nature, a fireplace out, not in a not in a inside a house, but bull in B.

[01:04:34]A long a bonfire. Yeah, bull. Bonfire. A bonfire. And hot.

[01:04:42]Here again, it means hand.

[01:04:45]Here again we see that um it is pronounced as an hun hand a hand hut hut. Yeah. And have we got a few more? I think we've got a few more. Very last ones we have moon. Moon moon. A long o sound. Moon. And that means moon.

[01:05:26]Yeah. And moon. Moon. And here in hot we can we can hear that it is a short short uh because it is followed by the N d sound.
