While modern education often sanitizes science into abstract formulas, this video returns chemistry to its visceral, high-stakes roots in the physical world. It is a powerful reminder that true intellectual mastery begins with the raw transformation of nature’s most basic materials.

Soap from Pigs
Added:That's a pink ticket job.
>> Pink ticket job, she says. Making soap with the littles.
It's fantastic good fun.
And you can't buy soap on a rope, so we make it. Also, it's not a pink ticket job. I am a liberated woman of color and I can see that some somebody is snibbling in on my blue ticket jobs.
So, you get what you get and you don't get upset.
I like making soap with the kids. It's beautiful soap from swine.
From pig. Not to worry, it's kosher cuz the pigs are castrated. First, the mise en place. It's a very simple recipe.
Water, lard, coconut, some scent, some molds, what else? Heat.
Uh we measure out our lye, which is sodium hydroxide. We'll do that in grams on account of we're sciencing. There are only two kinds of country in this world.
Ones that have been to the moon and ones who haven't.
Whatever.
Choking on my tongue tangulation.
We're going to use grams cuz it's If you're used to ounces, here's what you do.
You just hit the button.
And it's just numbers.
So, you can just go to grams.
97 g.
Do not get this stuff in your eyeball.
It hurts.
Do not get upset by the grams.
It's going to be okay. On the doll, just point out where that nasty Frenchman touched you.
We'll get it.
100 g. Little hot.
Now, we measure out the water. Tare it off.
We're looking for 258 g of water, which coincides to 200 and 58 ml.
I do cold water on account of the sodium hydroxide going into solution is an exothermic reaction. It's going to get hot.
58. Son of a Ta-da! Now, if you're hearkening back to your preschool chemistry, do as you're ordered, acid to water.
Acid to water.
Because if you add the water into there, it could boil over and spit at you.
And you want to be mixing this as you go.
And it will Oh, I forgot.
Thermometer. I'm going to throw the imperial types a bone. We're going to do this in Fahrenheit.
You'll see how hot this gets in a hurry.
Mix it up a little bit. Look at that, 93, 102.
Mixy, mixy, mixer.
I used cold water.
And I start to feel a little tickle in your taint there, not to worry.
That's just your mucous membranes getting digested. [clears throat] Now, you turn on the fume hood and get rid of those fumes.
And you see how hot that got. You don't need to stir over much unless you got a little one helping you. Make sure there's no splashing and splashing.
But that temperature has got to drop to 110, 130. While the water and lye is cooling, we measure out our fats. Not to be a nervous Nellie, but just a word of caution with the lye. It will saponify your skin and your cells.
Every cell in your body has a lipid membrane outer coating. This will steal from that lipid, that fat, and add an OH group in there. That's called saponification from Latin savon, well, the French is savon, which means soap. So, that saponification is a chemical reaction, and it's if you get it on your some powder on your hand, you'll feel it'll start to be really, really slippery.
What's happening is that is digesting the fats in your hand and turning it into soap, and it's super, super slippery. 136 g of coconut oil, remember water is 1 g per the milliliter. That is 1 kg to the liter.
So, approximately, you're going to have approximately 136 ml.
Half a cup.
Just as a error checking, so you're not, you know, if you're you're putting in cups and cups and cups of the stuff, maybe take a step back and give your head a shake. 544 lard, into the pot it goes.
Slow and low, boys. We're just melting, we're not cooking.
Melted. We got a few residual floaters from the last batch. No big deal because we're going to emulsify it anyway.
Little bit hot.
Let that cool down to 130, between 130 and 110 is fine. Even if it's your first batch of the day and you got a clean pot, you don't get these residual bits.
Don't matter none.
Baby doll just come in? Baby doll, would you care for a coffee while I wait for this to >> Hell, yes.
Wait, together?
>> [laughter] >> You know, when a man is attracted to a woman, all she needs to do is be kind, and he will give her everything that he's got.
Aw, thank you.
No, I that that that that Squeezy.
Any kids around? I got a joke for you.
>> No.
>> You're making some meatballs, huh?
Seamus O'Malley and Aidan O'Brien, two young lads from the countryside in Ireland.
They're walking along, they see a poor sheep stuck in a fence. It's head right through the fence, stuck, bleating away.
Baa. Baa.
Baa.
Seamus gives his buddy Aidan a little nudge. Hey, hey, watch this. He looks around, there's nobody around.
Drops his drawers, runs over to the sheep, starts pumping madly away at it.
Mid-stroke, he looks over to his buddy, says, "Want to have a go?"
And his buddy says to him, "Oh, my dear Seamus, I thought you'd never ask, but you don't mind.
I prefer not to put my head through the fence."
>> [laughter] >> When you see this magic completed, you will wonder why your better three quarters is going out to the fall fair, buying $20 handmade bars of soap, when they should be wrapped it in butcher paper, marked all cutie cutie with a kosher lard soap. 99 cents.
Farm-made bougie boutique soap is easier than falling off a log. Gently.
Carefulling.
About 10 minutes or so, she'll thicken right up.
That's good there. Now we can add the scent. I was going to just add vanilla, but cuz it's got alcohol in it, it takes longer to chooch. You'll be checking this if you your first time, you'll be checking this every half hour see if it's setting up.
But after you've done it a couple times, just set it aside for a couple weeks you go and try it'll be stiffening right up.
We're going to drop some liquid sunshine.
About a teaspoon.
Give or take.
I'm just going to fold it in.
I don't want to lose all the scent.
And look at that.
Goes faster if you don't shake it.
Smells nice, but I don't feel anything yet. It's been 30 minutes.
Maybe I should drop some more.
All right, y'all.
That's dickety-done or apocalypse-proof.
Anybody tells you not manly making soap, you let you you be you, man. Let your freak flag fly. There are many colors in the homo rainbow.
I'm going to keep you on a cliffhanger.
We'll come back and revisit these and I'll show you after we demold them. So thanks for watching.
Keep your dick in a vice. The description has all of the ingredients and the steps all laid out.
Spooky.
Who's touching my butt?
Whoa.
>> Fast.
Wait.
>> moving.
>> Whoa.
So you can actually see it?
>> Whoa. Creepy.
>> Still alive?
>> Yep.
Moving.
>> [snorts]
