$2,000 vs $3,500 vs $5,000 in the Philippines | 3 Very Different Lives

One has 2,000 US dollar a month, one has 3,500 a month, and one has 5,500 a month, where the dream version of life here [music] starts to feel very real. [00:00:47]Everybody, this is not a budgeting channel. Again, Retire and Dream Builders is not a budgeting channel.

[00:00:53]This is about the dream, the adventure, the second chapter. But, your monthly number shapes that [music] chapter. Your neighborhood, food, health care, travel, social life, and your emergency savings.

[00:01:07]Now, here's what we say, same country but different lifestyle, because people always ask, "How much does it cost [music] you or us to live in the Philippines?" That question, everybody, is too simple, because it can mean a comfortable apartment in Iloilo, or even coffee and fruit just a short walk away.

[00:01:27]Or, if you're in Cebu, malls, fast food stalls, [music] restaurants, and traffic that will test your character. It can mean also in Clark or Subic, more organized and familiar for foreigners.

[00:01:40]Or, BGC and Makati, Alabang, or Cebu IT Park, where convenience is very easy to buy. But, the real question behind the money that we're going to talk today is, most people are asking [music] something deeper than, "Can I afford this?" They are asking, "Can my life feel good again?" So, here's a five question I will recommend to you before you pick a number [music] because here is how I would think about it.

[00:02:08]Where do you actually want to live? Or how is your health right now? Like honestly. How much comfort do you need before a place feels like home? Or will you live mostly local or bring a lot of American habit with you?

[00:02:24]And is this budget for one person or two?

[00:02:28]Now, let's start with your $2,000 a month life. So, here's [music] something most people never hear.

[00:02:35]By Philippine standards, a $2,000 [music] a month is a wealthy income. Most household live or here live on far less, but you are not [music] arriving with Philippine habits. You are arriving with American ones. [music] Eating out, shopping, the coffee run. So, here is the honest truth. [music] Around $1,600 a month already buys a nice lifestyle here. Affordable place, good local food, with basic [music] condo. The extra 400 to 500 is what pays for the American habits.

[00:03:11]>> [music] >> Dinner out, a day at the mall, the Starbucks run. You might be in Iloilo, Davao, Bacolod, Dumaguete, [music] or a practical area outside the most expensive city centers. But here is the realistic setup. Housing around is $450.

[00:03:30][music] Utilities and internet around is $150.

[00:03:35]Food around $450, [music] especially if you eat mostly local. Now, health care set aside [music] is around $225 and your transportation around $100.

[00:03:49]Visa and admin around $50 dollar social life, small trips, [music] and even convenience around 275 US dollar. That leaves around 300 US dollar for [music] savings, emergencies, or extra tuition. So, yes, guys, 2,000 US dollars works when you choose [music] your city wisely. So, Jen, what 2,000 US dollar really gives you?

[00:04:16]This budget still wants structure, everyone. A doctor visit [music] can turn into an a test. We will never know.

[00:04:24]A hot season can spike your electricity bill. And every expat hit the grocery aisle moment, missing food from home, and the cart [music] gets expensive.

[00:04:36]But, make no mistakes in here. At this number, you are already living in the dream. It's just need [music] a smart city-controlled rent, mostly local habits, and emergency money that's set aside. So, let's talk about your 3,500 US dollar a month life.

[00:04:57]Now, 3,500 [music] US dollar a month, this is where the Philippines starts to feel >> [music] >> very, very different.

[00:05:05]You're no longer choosing the cheapest option every time. You can choose [music] a nicer apartment, a more convenient neighborhood, Grab without a guilt, or even more meals out, and your health care [music] with less stress.

[00:05:19]But, here is the realistic setup. Guys, housing around 900 [music] US dollar, utilities and internet around 250 US dollar, food around 750, health care around 400, >> [music] >> transportation around 250, visa and admin around 75, [music] social life, travel, and even your convenience around is 500 US [music] dollar. That leaves around 375 savings, emergencies, or extra cushions.

[00:05:50]Now, where 3,500 can take you at this level again, you can look [music] at Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Clark, Angeles, many parts of Manila, and maybe [music] a careful setup near Makati, Taguig, or Alabang. 3,500 everyone is a comfortable money, not magic money. [music] So, stay intentional again, just friendly reminder, >> [music] >> and it gives you a genuinely good life.

[00:06:18]So, how about your $5,000 month life? Now, 5,000 [music] a month.

[00:06:24]This is where living here can feel like a true, true lifestyle upgrade. [music] When I say upgrade, upgrade, upgrade.

[00:06:31]So, you can look at BGC, Makati, Alabang, Cebu IT Park, Cebu [music] Business Park, Clark, Subic, and other place where convenience is easier to buy. Better condos, building security, hospital access, and even more restaurants, imported groceries, domestic travels, maybe help around the house, or a driver. More freedom to say yes. But, here is a realistic setup also. Housing is around 1,500.

[00:07:03]Utilities and internet around $300.

[00:07:07]Food is around $1,000. [music] Health care around $600.

[00:07:13]Transportation around 350.

[00:07:16]Your visa and your admin is around $100.

[00:07:20]Social life, travel, and conveniences around [music] 750.

[00:07:25]That leaves around $400 for savings, [music] emergencies, or extra safety buffer.

[00:07:30]Now, just a one friendly heads-up at $5,000.

[00:07:35]Basic living usually is not the challenge. Staying intentional is.

[00:07:39]Because a nicer condo, more dinner out, more flat, even a driver, [music] a cleaner, a little upgrade here, another there, and suddenly premium feels normal. So, yes, everybody, $5,000 buys [music] a beautiful life, freedom, flexibility, and breathing room in the Philippines. So, here is the real difference in those [music] numbers. At $2,000, you are already living in the dream.

[00:08:08]At $3,500, you breathe inside the dream. At $5,000, you shape the dream around what you actually want. The mistake is wanting one [music] lifestyle in your heart while funding a different one from your bank account.

[00:08:25]So, just [snorts] a quick FAQ, can you live in 1,500 a month? Some people can, but I would not build your plan around that number.

[00:08:35]So, is [music] $2,000 enough for one person in the right city with controlled [music] spending? Yes.

[00:08:44]Is $3,500 enough for many retirees and careful couple?

[00:08:50]Yes. What does $5,000 get you? Better location, [music] more health care coverage, more travel, more convenience, and a lot of peace of mind when life [music] gets messy. So, everybody, before you pick your number, ask yourself a few honest questions. Is this for [music] one person or a couple?

[00:09:10]Does your number include housing, food, health care, your transportation, [music] utilities, visas, and emergencies?

[00:09:18]Does the city you want actually [music] like fit the income you have?

[00:09:23]That's important. Will you eat mostly local food or mostly western food?

[00:09:29]How much air conditioning will you really run? And do you need a private health care nearby? And will you use Grab, taxis, [music] a driver, or a car?

[00:09:39]Do you have at least 6 months of emergency savings, or can you still live this way after [music] 6 months once the excitement settles and real life begins?

[00:09:48]Because I think the real question is not how cheap is the Philippines.

[00:09:53]It is which version of the dream you dream can my income or your income actually buy.
