Uh recently, he took his talents from the sea to stage as the newest member of the Chippendales crew from Hulu's Love Overboard, David.

[00:00:46]We will make this under 43 minutes for you, cuz I just want to I just want to grasp that timing for you. I definitely want to get into the show. I loved it. I love a competition format, but what made you sign up for the show in the first place?

[00:00:58]Um honestly, I think it was my mom. Your mother.

[00:01:03]>> My mom sent me a posting about it or something like that.

[00:01:07]And Oh, no, no, no. No. Uh they reached out to me, I think originally.

[00:01:12]And then I think she had also sent me something from the same thing. They're like ad or whatever. They were looking for people. Um and she was like, "You should You should do this." Really?

[00:01:23]>> Yeah. You were single for a while. Like, is your mom like trying to encourage you to marry? Like, what's the relationship with your mom like that she would know you'd be good? I was single for maybe about a year. Okay. Uh prior. Um but she was very much aware of my breakup. Uh and so I think she maybe because of that was like, "Yeah, you should get out there." And Any hesitancies on your part about joining a reality show?

[00:01:45]>> Definitely.

[00:01:46]Before the show, I mean. Now, maybe maybe you feel differently now, but >> Oh, shoot. Uh I definitely had hesitancies. I Um you know, just cuz it is a vulnerable, you know, space to be in and and you're really putting yourself out there and I wasn't sure how it was going to tie up with my career. Sure.

[00:02:05]Sure. Clashes or not. Um, so I I was definitely hesitant, but you know, I'm I'm really glad I did it.

[00:02:11]>> You're a mental health counselor, right?

[00:02:13]Okay, so you have a good idea of probably how to keep a level head about all this. Do you think that helped kind of being in the public eye and public scrutiny of knowing kind of like I think it's definitely helped since the show's come out. Yeah, I hope so. You know, dealing with, you know, other people, you know, saying what whatever they want, I think is um, tough for anybody Absolutely.

[00:02:38]Absolutely.

[00:02:38]>> but I think, you know, with what I've learned in mental health, it's just you know, it's not something that weighs on me, whether it's good or bad. So I usually just I'm always trying to stay grounded. So either, you know, even if somebody's hyping me up too much, you know, that I also like to stay grounded and, you know, keep an even keel. Um, and then it's the same thing if somebody's trying to tear you down, you got to, you know, Rise above.

[00:03:02]>> Stay even keeled and, yeah, not let it bring you down too much. I call that not reading the comments, usually. I try to avoid most of them.

[00:03:09]>> That's insane.

[00:03:11]We have to get into why you do that.

[00:03:14]Every every single one. Reality stars are kind of always saying that things move fast on dating shows. So on a scale of marrying someone you just met in Vegas to flying a stranger to Thailand for your birthday Did you do your research?

[00:03:29]>> where does Love Overboard come? On that scale, it was it was kind of just in line with my speed, which is pretty quick.

[00:03:37]Because you've done both of these things. You've married some You've married someone you just met in Vegas.

[00:03:42]We didn't actually go through. We were going to >> hope not. Okay. [laughter] We went to the jewelry store and it was closed and that was kind of like a sign. Enough to like sober us up a little bit and we were like, "Ooh, maybe that's Maybe that's fate. We shouldn't Let's wait a sec." And >> How How did you meet this person? Uh at a day club.

[00:04:03]A day club? That's what they call it? A day club? And how long did you know this said person at this day club for?

[00:04:10]>> Ooh, maybe 30 minutes, maybe an hour.

[00:04:13]And are you living there? a couple hours, you know, really I have no idea how long I was there.

[00:04:17]>> Okay, and you were of the right mind or no?

[00:04:19]>> No, not really. Okay, okay, okay. So this is >> a blast. Would your mom have approved of this nuptials? I did FaceTime my mom and introduce her to the Oh, thanks.

[00:04:29][laughter] Okay, okay. Uh and she she They were She liked her. She said she was really pretty and sweet. I mean, I just have so much to say.

[00:04:37]>> think she approved [clears throat] of it.

[00:04:38]>> Well, I I mean, I'm I'm sure she cares about you a little bit. I just have a hunch. And then you flew a stranger to Thailand just like These are things that women tend to not do because we don't want to put ourselves in danger. So I'm just curious as to like She wasn't a total stranger. Like I knew >> [laughter] >> her. I just I didn't know her that well.

[00:04:58]Like we weren't previously dating before. It was kind of like a first date sort of a thing. All right, and you were like agreed to fly her to Thailand to see you.

[00:05:05]>> Yeah. All right, that's >> with me. Like it was my birthday trip. I was like, "You should come. Like this will be fun."

[00:05:11]>> And she came. Yeah, yeah. And did you date after that? We did not.

[00:05:15]Didn't work out.

[00:05:17]There was just a moment that gave me an ick.

[00:05:22]And I was just like >> the ick? I got the ick. What was the moment? I got to know.

[00:05:26]>> The ick was so she She had ordered like a bunch of room service, which is fine. It was that she was like rude to the staff.

[00:05:35]>> a That's a That's a red flag.

[00:05:37]>> came up and she was like, "I'm planning about the order." And like da da da da da da and I was like, "Relax. Like they're not >> Yeah, flew you to Thailand. Just enjoy it.

[00:05:45]>> Sure, that. Yeah, but like these some people, like, you can't like, you know. Right. Relax.

[00:05:49]>> Figure out of them. It's like, he's doing what he's got to do. Like, let him do it and just order it again. Like, they might They'll get it right the second time. So, I don't know. It just kind of gave me the ick and Good on you.

[00:05:59]Because, you know what? When all my friends started dating people in COVID, and they're like, "We're moving in." I was like, "No, no, no. You need to wait until we're out of quarantine to see what they're like to waitstaff, to other people, to people on the street, on the subways, in restaurants." Like, See them in the real world. How they really are.

[00:06:15]>> how these people are really interacting with other people. Cuz that says a lot about a person. And I used to be a waitress, so I sort of understand how nasty people can be. And so, All right.

[00:06:23]That's it. That's an okay ick. I'm curious for you, would your exes, of all of your exes, would would you say that you were a red flag or a green flag to date? And does that change post filming Love Overboard? I think I'm a green flag to date. Okay.

[00:06:38]>> I'm a red flag to break up with. Walk me through that. Ooh. I don't >> [laughter] >> How are you a red flag to break up with?

[00:06:46]I just don't think I've ever had a good breakup. I've had one good breakup. And that was the girl I dated in high school. We broke up and I went to college and it was nice and >> just like normal. Uh but I feel like every other breakup has been kind of rough. Do you think that's because of you? I I would assume some blame in there. Um What exactly? I'm not sure. Like, I You know, it is something I've looked into.

[00:07:11]Um and I'm sure there is blame on my end. I just I just do my best.

[00:07:15]>> Yeah, it always takes two to tango. I mean, for sure.

[00:07:18]>> Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Okay, so note to self, date you. Just don't break up with you. If you're going to date you, you got to get in it for the long haul. Oh my god, yeah. [laughter] Oh my god. All right. I want to get into the show, because obviously this is This is what we're here to talk about. So, after coupling up with Lo, we know your history. You do things kind of quickly, are willing to marry a woman in Vegas after 30 minutes.

[00:07:39]You You of quickly became the mom and dad of the group, the power couple of the yacht. I felt like everyone was really looking up to you.

[00:07:46]Did you expect to have that strong of connection with someone early on? Were you going there to find love, or were you going there just to see what was up?

[00:07:53]I definitely didn't expect to have a like a strong coupling right off the bat. Um but that is kind of why I went there. I feel like more so than a lot of other people. Like I didn't really come into it with any sort of following or influencer background. So for me it was like I thought it was a a good way to meet somebody that I thought would be attractive, that I might have something and it would be a fun way to do it. So I was like Mom approved, so Mom approved, so I was like this this adds up to, you know, everything I need for, you know, a good I don't know. What do you call it?

[00:08:26]Stab at a relationship?

[00:08:27]>> Yeah. Were we surprised at how quickly you connected with Lo? I mean, did it scare you how quickly you connected with her? No.

[00:08:36]I wasn't surprised. Um I wouldn't say When you're smirking, it makes me feel like you're trying to figure out how to answer it honestly, and I just want you to answer it honestly.

[00:08:46]I I think I'm not surprised by where her feelings were. Okay. Um I think the whole time I think I kind of tried to keep a mature head on on my shoulders and just realize that I'm on a TV show and as much as I do want something real, like I need to be realistic and know that like there's a lot of things that we're not going to see in an experience like this that, you know, would be applicable to a real relationship outside.

[00:09:13]>> environment, something.

[00:09:15]>> Yeah. So like as much as, you know, I could feel the emotions and the connection, I was kind of still like I got to see what it's like in the real world, like that's fine. I'm I'm more in, but hold on, like we got to be realistic here, like we do have to see if this works outside. You know, you coupled up with her pretty quickly, which I felt like maybe made it so you weren't connecting with any of the other women potentially. But, Bella didn't really hesitate to kind of shoot her shot cuz there's two things going on. I mean, there's are we compatible and then I want to get to the top side, right?

[00:09:49]So, there's this like underlying current of I don't want to be serving, I want to be the one served to. Looking back, do you think Bella's feelings for you were just a ploy to get to the top side or do you think she was genuinely interested in you? I think probably both. Okay.

[00:10:02]>> it would be safe to say I would I would assume both a little bit of um she definitely wanted to get top side.

[00:10:09]>> They they all do. By dating me, that would have been a you know, an avenue to do that. Uh but, I think she also did express interest in me at at one point.

[00:10:18]Um Were you interested in her? No, but I I wouldn't say I really ever had a chance to. Right.

[00:10:24]>> Um before she even spoke to me, I felt like multiple girls from the downside or just from the cast had pulled me aside and they're like, "Oh, she's doing this downstairs and she wants you da da da da so I was like, "Oh my god, like that sounds like a lot.

[00:10:40]Like maybe not Let's maybe not bring that my way. Like I don't know what's going on down there, but they're saying it's a lot and she's freaking out and da da da so I was like, "Oh, okay.

[00:10:50]I want to steer away from that."

[00:10:52]>> Mhm.

[00:10:53]Now having seen the show, I know that it wasn't necessarily what was told me. It They made it sound like she was freaking out. Which she was.

[00:11:01]She was losing her [ __ ] but I was like >> There was like a lot of bullying going on, too. And so, I was like, "Uh I think if I had known that that was going on, I probably would have given her more of a chance. I just only got it fed to me that she was losing her [ __ ] down there and to stay clear." And so, I did. How much of your connection with Lo was genuine and then how much was you wanted to stay top side? I would say it was all I would say all genuine. Okay.

[00:11:28]Yeah. Um I was totally okay with with going downside. Um I'm surprised that I was the only one that >> We're going to get to you going down side in a little bit Dave.

[00:11:37]>> I never saw it. No, you saw I mean that as a as a double entendre if you will. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes. Got you.

[00:11:46]>> See what I did there? Yeah, I did. I reversed it. Um how did you feel when James during the heart rate challenge?

[00:11:52]You know, there was obviously a little bit of jealousy between Lo's protectiveness of you guys and your relationship. I'm not sure how much on your part. You were a little bit more reserved in that aspect of it at least on your or you seem chill. I mean, I don't know if you are actually chill, but you at least gave that impression.

[00:12:09]>> a loose leash is how you do fine.

[00:12:13]If you love them, let them go and Let them go. You hold them back. That's an attachment.

[00:12:17]>> at least what seemed to be Lo's tactic on the show. So, how did you feel when James put the moves on Lo during the heart rate challenge? Were you jealous?

[00:12:25]Were you just like, oh, this is a game?

[00:12:27]Like how did you sort of treat that? I wish they had shown the full clip of him dancing, not the edited part because it was hilarious. Okay, so it was more funny. It was hard not to laugh.

[00:12:37]>> They they did him a huge favor with that edit. It was so horrible.

[00:12:41]>> [laughter] >> It was so bad.

[00:12:43]I was I thought it was funny. So, I I I definitely am you know, that's not something where I would yeah, I would be worried or bothered by it.

[00:12:53]I thought it was all in fun and he wanted to get to the top and I get that, but And how did you you know, we sort of see it a little bit but Lo's jealousy or at least seeming jealousy or protectiveness because I know that everyone sort of gets an interesting edit. This is called after the edit.

[00:13:07]Were you affected by that? Did you like it? Was it appealing to you? Did it scare you? Like her jealous nature?

[00:13:14]>> Yeah, just her like basically saying you guys are married after the first episode and you know, don't come for my man kind of thing. I would say I didn't really even notice it as much during until after. You know, seeing it back I was like, wow. That is kind of a lot."

[00:13:29]Um but during it just kind of fit with the environment cuz there is so much pressure from other cast and just the premise of the show and like how it, you know, all works.

[00:13:40]Um it kind of more just felt like she was doing that cuz it was you know, cuz people are trying to, you know, come at you and perceive so I was like, "Oh, okay." Kind of fits. I don't feel like it's necessarily too much, but watching it back I it was a it was a bit much. Well, I I you know, I told you I made the joke about going down side. I have to ask. I'm a gay woman. I just got to know for clarity's sake because Val comes in. She's sort of this bombshell.

[00:14:04]She's your type.

[00:14:05]>> Sure. Now, she told Christine that you had licked her and I just have to know.

[00:14:10]Are we talking about like going down on her? Are we talking about something else here? So, I had I had no idea she said that. That's I don't know what that would be what I >> You didn't even see it in the show. She said that to her. Y- Yeah, like >> Yeah, no. She was like she he licked me. After she gave you a [ __ ] in the shower. This is what You you you So, you're being coy. See, I'm getting nervous telling you the details of your own sexual experiences and this is making me nervous. This does not happen in my world.

[00:14:38]>> say that it did not happen like that as it was described.

[00:14:43]>> Okay.

[00:14:45]I think the only way >> [laughter] >> the only way I've been able to explain it to people is I literally have to like re-enact it. So, if you I will not be volunteering for for obvious reasons, but I would like to know.

[00:14:59]Okay. So, Val was not being accurate in her description of what happened between the two of you.

[00:15:04]>> say that that was accurate. Do you regret what went down with Val on that date? I regret how I explained it.

[00:15:14]I regret maybe not telling everybody exactly what happened right away so that it didn't build into something else. You wish you would maybe like told Lo sooner? See, I would I'm not going to give you 43 minutes to answer this.

[00:15:30]>> [laughter] >> Let's see, how do I answer this? I I do wish I'd told her sooner.

[00:15:35]Um I just did There wasn't really that opportunity to tell her. It was, you know, that happened, and the next time I saw her she They were on the plank. You know, we're walking up, so it wasn't really Other couples got a chance to either like um I know after Lexi's date, she got to see both of them and talk to um Andrew after his date came and talked to everybody and was able to hear what everyone said about, you know, what was Sophia was saying behind his back.

[00:16:00]Um Gia got to do the same thing and you know, converse with everybody and say, "Here's what's going on."

[00:16:06]Whereas I did not. So, um I think That was okay to say?

[00:16:14]Don't look at her. You're in the hot seat now.

[00:16:16]She's given up She's given up her rights right now to you. You're She's given up your rights.

[00:16:20]>> Okay, okay. So, Lo recently revealed that you were required to say yes to the date from any outsider. Is that true, and would you have had said yes if you weren't required with Al?

[00:16:31]I would have not. You would have said no?

[00:16:32]>> And and I And that's kind of what I kept explaining to everybody is that like in the real world, there are a lot of things that I wouldn't do. Like if I'm pursuing someone, I'm not going on dates with other people. So, that whole situation in the real world I would have just never unfolded.

[00:16:50]>> Because right. I'd have been like, "No, I can't go on a date. Like I'm interested in this person or I'm going this way." Although one could argue that even though you said yes, you didn't have to take it as far as it was taken. You could have just had a normal True. sort of like friendly banter. So, there's a little bit of a little bit of a double-edged sword there for you.

[00:17:09]Um you know, you spent 43 minutes kind of contemplating if you were going to plank basically Lo or Val. Did you know that you were always going to plank Lo and you were just kind of waffling on how to do it or how did that happen?

[00:17:21]No.

[00:17:22]Um I really had no idea going into it.

[00:17:25]Um I think what I was battling between is I think there was I could tell that there the cast wanted me to do something.

[00:17:34]I could tell. They wanted you to plank Val. Yeah. Okay. I could tell the filler word story wanted me to go, you know, a certain way maybe. Okay. That maybe would be more fit with the show. And then there was what I wanted. And I think [laughter] And what did you want? In that moment, if if I could have literally done whatever I wanted, I probably would have picked either. You would have planked both of them.

[00:18:04]>> jumping off myself and like, "What's like what's the best thing to do here?

[00:18:08]Should I just jump? Should should I just walk off? Should I say I need to go to the bathroom so I can can have more time to think? Should I you know, plank Val and then date Lo but like my thought behind that was the second that that happened, I immediately was wasting her time. And so I was like, "I got to cut her off but like I'm the longer I stay with her, the more time I'm wasting so it's best to just It's just weird cuz it's a show so you can't like I can't just leave and like date somebody. It's like she has to go.

[00:18:44]Ideally, it would have been better if I could have just been like, "Hey, I'm done with you.

[00:18:48]Go try to date someone else." Right.

[00:18:50]That I would have loved that option. You didn't want [clears throat] to end their opportunity at the same time but you kind of had to.

[00:18:55]>> be done. Though off, that's what I feel bad about but it would have I don't think it was going to work. So You didn't think it was going to work with Lo or Val. Yeah. Do you think viewers have sort of this incorrect assumption of you based on the show? Obviously, like your cast members were ridiculing you and yelling at you for these 43 minutes and you know, they treated you poorly. Deserved or not, I'm not here to make a judgment, but is there anything you wish that was shown that like wasn't about who you were, what audiences should see? Yeah.

[00:19:22]Um and of course and I I bet you everybody from the show does to some degree. I'm totally okay, you know, with the edit and the decisions I made on it.

[00:19:30]I do wish it showed maybe more character development and more about who each person is on their own.

[00:19:37]Um because I think that plays a pretty big factor into it as well. Like I would say the behind-the-scenes stuff, you know, the who is just kind of generally polite and more friendly to people, who is you know, bickering and demanding these things of other people, and you know, and and just kind of and all that like not as not a good person. And like, you know, I wish they had pulled some of those character pieces out in people a little bit better. Would you say the edit though was fairly fair?

[00:20:11]For some people.

[00:20:13]But not on you.

[00:20:15]Uh I wouldn't even say necessarily mine.

[00:20:17]Um I would just say watching it back I could see where I I know some people are probably upset with with their edit.

[00:20:24]>> edit. Um with mine, I wouldn't say I'm upset, um but there are some things I would have done differently seeing how they got, you know, warped and turned into something. I want to play a game with you, but before I just get to that, are you in touch with Lo or Val today?

[00:20:38]Are you friendly with them?

[00:20:40]Persona non grata? I am somebody who doesn't really believe in keeping in touch with your exes. Generally that means you're the problem, David. Really?

[00:20:49]>> Oh, yeah. You got to be friends with one ex. Uh well, I'm o- cool with an open door. Like you guys can be friendly, but I'm not going to You're not going to pursue >> I'm not keeping that fire alive. Like let me break up with you. Let me get out of here. Like Yeah, literally. Maybe that's what it is. Okay, so door is open on your side, but you haven't communicated with them. Uh I've I've talked to them. Um Lo has reached out a handful of times. Um Val has been a little bit more cordial. Okay.

[00:21:16]Um where it's just like, "Hey, da da da." It's like, "Okay." Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Hope you're well. Hope you're doing okay. Boom, done.

[00:21:23]Um where is Lo is just weird.

[00:21:28]Is how I would describe it.

[00:21:30]Like, she'll reach out and one day it's like friendly talk, and then the next it's like, "Fuck you, and I remember da da da." And then the next it's like, "Hey, are you going to be at da da da?" And then the next one will be, "We're not friends, and da da da." I'm just like, "Oh my god." I responded to one of these like, "What What are we What are we doing here?" But >> Yeah. Yeah, I think I think closure is >> Closure is key. This is I'm teaching you to be a green flag in your breakup journey.

[00:21:54]>> I need to do is close it. Was there anything you felt like you couldn't say on camera or didn't say in the episode that you wanted to? Mhm.

[00:22:02]Yeah. Yeah, there's definitely a couple things I I I felt like I pulled a lot of punches on the show that I probably would have said, and I'm probably glad I I didn't.

[00:22:13]>> Against Lo and Val, or against other people? Against just everybody.

[00:22:16]>> [laughter] >> You were up against the wall, and you felt like >> just about everybody. Uh there are probably far and few who I I didn't have more to say. Um Anyone you thought like they're up on the plank, they're trying to save their their careers on Love Island? Who was the biggest bullshitter up on the plank?

[00:22:33]Whose speech did you not buy at all?

[00:22:35]Biggest bullshitter?

[00:22:39]I I'm honestly there Some of them are hard to remember. Some of them are forgettable. Uh if I'm being honest. Uh biggest bullshitter maybe I don't know, maybe Prescod's? His was kind of cuz I think he was reaching for Delaney, and it was kind of a fall flat. I feel like um Sophia's was obviously fake.

[00:23:02]>> Yes. she kind of said that and >> [laughter] >> that was very well >> she was honest about it.

[00:23:05]>> Probably that one. Probably hers, yeah.

[00:23:07]>> Fair enough. Fair enough. Yeah, [clears throat] I didn't think of that one. What did your mom say after the show?

[00:23:12]Uh she I think she liked it.

[00:23:15]>> it? Okay. Um but she also reads all the comments.

[00:23:21]>> And she Parents shouldn't really do that. Yeah, I know. Cuz you don't want [laughter] to see that. You know, your moms don't need to see that. I would argue that you don't either, but moms really don't cuz they're not going to understand it. I'm able to laugh it off though. Like I think when somebody goes way into it, I'm like, that's so nuts. Like what are you saying?

[00:23:39]>> is like She's going to take it personally. I can't believe and she'll text me. She'll be like, this is what I wanted to say to them. Da da da. I'm like, but mom, you can't do that. Like don't [laughter] get in there. Do not respond to them.

[00:23:51]Uh I don't think she thought either.
