Profitability Plunge 28 Point Drop Puts Majority of U S Dairies in the Red for 2026

[00:00:00]The vibrant optimism that we saw in the dairy industry just a year ago has faded into what producers are calling a gray skyline. According to Farm Journal's 2026 State of the Dairy Industry Report, we are witnessing a fundamental margin revolution that is testing the grit of producers.

[00:00:21]Our data reveals a jarring reality check. In 2025, 74% of producers expected a profit, but only 61% saw one.

[00:00:30]That gap has caused expectations to crater in 2026 to just 46%.

[00:00:37]This is a 28-point decline driven by a perfect storm, if you will, of milk prices and a breaking point of input cost.

[00:00:46]Producers are also caught in a catch-22.

[00:00:49]They have aging infrastructure, but the essential cost to replace it has nearly doubled in 5 years. They can't afford to fix their facilities, but really they can't afford the inefficiencies of keeping them broken.

[00:01:02]Despite the burnout, if you will, and global trade concerns, producers are still optimistic. 45% of producers are still planning to expand in the next 5 years. This isn't just about adding cows, it's about outlining their future.
