What I think is cool to practice with harmonizing a major scale is instead of always harmonizing stuff with triads, uh, you know, like these classic triad shapes, I mean, you should know these, of course, before you start talking about what I'm talking about, but like, uh, you can harmonize notes with the same chord type. That's super fun.

[00:00:41][music] So like harmonizing your major scale with one voicing is super cool. And then if you're playing fills, you can use the voicings as fills, which is super fun [music] [music] like that voicing.

[00:01:21]Pick a voicing like 7, five, [music] six and try play your whole major scale [music] with one voicing.

[00:01:46]even like a 159. [music] That's you can kind of put that voicing in so many parts of your major scale.

[00:01:55]Everything except the three chord and the seven chord. You can play that voicing [music] and it's going to work. [music] >> [music] >> which is very cool. So, I think in terms of chords, uh, I'm really into that. And then in terms of harmonizing a melody with chords, something really fun is like play an insanely simple melody.

[00:02:31]Like for instance, [music] even just that, and try harmonize it.

[00:02:38]Even [music] one chord type can sound cool.

[00:02:43]or or or two [music] or or then you can play those as fills.

[00:03:00]I mean, I can go so deep on that. I really like that stuff.

[00:03:05]And then even if you're playing like yeah a kind of bass groove, you can throw those uh throw throw those in. Even if it's kind of like pretty out sounding stuff.

[00:03:26][music] >> [music] >> etc., etc. You can you can kind of like put a drum groove on and then practice seeing if you can harmonize melodies like in real time with cool voicings.

[00:03:50]You know, [music] once you find like a bunch of really strong voicings, you can get away with like an insane amount of stuff.

[00:04:04]Do you mean like playing a fill and then doing something like that? So, [music] I'm ending a fill with a chord [music] like that.

[00:04:18]Cuz yeah, you can apply the same concepts [music] if that if that's what you're asking.

[00:04:28]Yeah. So, yeah. [music] Take the classic fills you play or like try playing a fill and at the end of it [music] harmonize the top note.

[00:04:45][music] So I can harmonize this note like [music] so yeah. [music] if that's what you mean. You just need to know like that top note.

[00:05:12]Uh what note does that what chords does that one note belong to? And there's a lot and you need to sit and work those out. [music] There's so many chords that one note can belong to. So, it's kind of fun, I think, to practice that you you play a note [music] and then ask yourself [music] How many chords can this note be at the top of? So yeah, like there, [music] let's say I take this note. It can be a top of a minor 7, top of a major 7, top of a six chord, top of a sus 9, [music] top of a sus 9 sharp 11, top of second inversion, B major, second inversion, B minor, D flat 7, sus, C major, 7 sharp, 11, B. It could be the top note of all of those chords, which is pretty crazy.

[00:06:30]And and a lot more. But yeah, [music] [music] how to memorize the modes faster? That's a good question. Something that might help you is there's three major modes and four minor modes. So it's like cool if you know C Ionian is C major.

[00:07:05]Then Lydian is exactly the same. It has a sharp four. Okay. So you already know Lydian. Lydian is the major scale with a sharp four. And mixelyian your other major mode because it has a major third is the major scale with a flat 7.

[00:07:23]So you already can say you know that. So your three major modes Ionian is the major scale. Lydian is just major scale with a sharp 11. Mixelyian is major scale with a flat 7. Yeah.

[00:07:42]And then your minor modes. Think about it. Okay.

[00:07:46]Go in order of lightest to darkest.

[00:07:51]Dorian is just got that flat three and flat 7.

[00:07:56][music] Next is aolon which is a natural minor scale. Maybe you already know. So then you're just adding in the flat 6.

[00:08:07][music] So one note darker.

[00:08:11]Frigen is one note darker than that. So you just add the flat two.

[00:08:17]And lock is one note darker than that.

[00:08:19]Everything is flat except the fourth. So it can help to separate your modes into the three major modes and the four minor modes.
